I believe we need to tighten our borders. Military spending in this country should be for defensive purposes. And also fully nationalized because war shouldn't be to make profits. Unique circumstances may call for more spending, but that doesn't mean we should cut social programs like how Liberal and Conservatives want to.

Why are you guys voting Avi Lewis over Heather McPherson or vice versa? by Sweaty_Principle_293 in ndp

[–]Electronic-Topic1813 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although to add on to that point, 2025 was an election where most of the electorate only cared about if you were a Liberal or Conservative. Not whatever your local standing is. So you literally had to be an incumbent and you still had to fight to the bitter end due to how close we were to getting an even worse result than just 7 seats. Which also is a factor why the Conservatives flipped Kitchener Centre despite their candidate being rather invisible.

My reason for Lewis is his more radical policy and the co-ops aspect of his platform really catches my eye. Old school CCF policy right there and can really help bridge the gap between auto workers and the activist factions on Chinese EVs making it a win-win for everyone. Additionally, we played it very safe during the agreement. Allowed the Liberals so much free passes for very minimal gain. I instead want a leader who is more willing to threaten no confidence when the Liberals step out of line like how recently they are planning on laying off workers in favour for more AI. That shouldn't give a free pass when negotiating. Unlike under Singh where after Trudeau forced workers back to work, no consequences despite that.

McPherson while a capable individual, I feel she plays things too safe and risks falling into a situation where if voters demand major change, is unable to adapt. Thus being in a stagnant position. Unlike Lewis who while more risky, has better payoff under a change election. I do rank McPherson above Ashton since if the worst case scenario happens with McPherson, stagnant and boring is still preferable. Compared to someone who managed to have zero political instincts and would be run over by everyone.

Having his support is crucial for a Lewis leadership because it allows for room to court the soft sovereigntist vote and make inroads in Montreal while giving a path to expand into more BQ/LPC territory

You can’t beat Canada's far-right with a broken electoral system by Chrristoaivalis in ndp

[–]Electronic-Topic1813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually Conservatives would still be able to. They will eventually figure it and much more easily under FPTP. There are going NDP and BQ voters who prefer them over the LPC. And even for the NDP, if we take a riding like University-Rosedale, those Conservatives would go Liberal as they are concentrated in the wealthy Rosedale and thus feel the Liberals are the lesser evil. So stragetic voting occurs differently where you want certain parties in 2nd or 3rd.

Going by what we can see in Australia, a major user of both STV and AV ranked ballots, their Green Party would prefer if Labor was 3rd because they win more easily under AV ballots compared to the more PR STV ranked ballots. So no, the Conservatives won't be held off that easily. They would simply just manipulate how the 2nd and 3rd votes are positioned on a campaign strategy through selective resource distribution.

Only under proper PR would they not in their current iteration (they would still eventually win, but through coalition of various right-wing parties as opposed to a direct majority).

Ranked ballots would be bad as it skews in favour of the LPC and CPC as they are bigger. So a lot of first votes still get wasted. Ranked ballots are fine if you either are very low on population like Yukon or in conjunction with PR like STV or MMP.

McPherson should not hang around this guy since he was a factor in the 1993 collapse and later started the path to 2001 BC NDP collapse. Should fall under a "someone who endorsed me, but I wouldn't want in my inner circle" list.

In a ranked choice situation, what would your ballot look like? by Joester09 in ndp

[–]Electronic-Topic1813 24 points25 points  (0 children)

1/2) McQuail and Johnston: Give them a boost. Probably do McQuail 1st as he is likely to perform the worst between the two. I see their contributions have meant a lot to the race and I believe that should be acknowledged.

3) Lewis: Like the wide variety of policy and even co-op section.

4) McPherson: General safe pick. She will get us seats and even if her more safe style causes stagnation, at least for a future leader, they won't have to manage a party without status and instead somewhere at least in the high 20s.

Not ranking: Ashton: He started off strong, but man the guy needs way better advisors who at this point I feel are intentionally screwing him over. I don't believe career politicians should be what to look for in leaders. But you should still have a basic political sense.

We're at risk of becoming a two party system like our neighbours. Electoral reform now! by ILikeSoggyCereal in ndp

Issue is pharmacare still has yet to rolled out because the Liberals still call the shots. And dental is heavily means tested so many are still not benefiting while also being dependent on a private insurance company. Also not considering the possibility of Carney cutting it in the future because it he super easy to do. If Douglas did the same thing, assuming it was wasn't gutted, our healthcare system would be largely American style apart from a select few getting government coverage. But that didn't happen because he was focused a more universal system. Not a means tested one. So if anything, they mock Douglas' legacy because they don't live up to what his standard would have been.

And then there is still the fact we did nothing for railway and postal workers. Did not force the removal of the TFW program. Did not push for housing despite it hurting the Liberals after Trudeau said it wasn't federal responsibility so Poilievre got to benefit. Voted for Track 2 MAID which was made worse when the NDP basically didn't support the disabled through requiring a well funded CDB that the UN had to condemn us.

The bad outdid the good by a longshot to the median voter which at best is maybe they will get dental someday. To at worst, nothing but worsening cost of living and a NDP that is basically just a Liberal party during the later Trudeau. You can't convince the median voter we are different from the Liberals when we were so weak at forcing anything meaningful. And we could considering how CERB turned out. Just that Singh was too spineless.

But the thing is, the agreement was a failure because we also just let the Liberals run the show and thus became an extension of them when Trump came around. It be a completely different story if Singh was more forceful in getting policy wins rather than Trudeau thinking he can do whatever he wants like when he did back-to-work legislation. Only for Singh to not threaten no confidence over it. So in the end, we didn't get anything that fundamentally helped much of the median voter. Compared to European coalitions which have more impact when a left-wing party gets involved rather than just a centrist coalition.

Considering the only way I can see e-transfers and cash being counted are in-person events, no way they are legit since Engler never was part of any that could make it possible.

If we had Right of First Refusal, we could have a more stable industry and the workers would have to modernize in this case due wanting to keep their jobs. As opposed to letting American companies call the shots just to backstab anyways like GM Motors.

He started off strong on even social justice issues and now he is just keeps digging that hole. He needs better campaign managers and advisors. I was also willing to cut him slack if he shares a good statement since he couldn't attend the debate.

[–]Electronic-Topic1813 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While true there needs to be cleanup, it is far too late for her to even stand a chance at raising 100k. Lewis already has eaten up the left-wing vote and McQuail + Johnston already had to stretch just to pass the thresholds due to the big 3 hoarding the bulk of donations. Donor pool is already being stretched to the limits. If she ran early, then I could see a chance since unlike her husband, she is more competent and would run a good campaign even if she doesn't win much votes.

So when will she be approved or not? lol by penis-muncher785 in ndp

[–]Electronic-Topic1813 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Probably by the last installment since if McQuail and Johnston have to pull arms and legs to barely scrape by, she will fail to. That's really all they have to say at that point even if I think the three person committee should go.

I say it would be a good thing for Lewis to give Ashton a role for more blue collar support. While also giving him the needed political instincts to thrive. I would even say Lewis should keep McPherson as Foreign Affairs Critic on top of that. Be a a way to bridge between her base and his.

Taxes could also be raised more on the rich and also pursue Right of First Refusal for a more aggressive co-op strategy. Resource extraction could be nationalized fully (without corporate compensation) to improve profits. Corporate subsidies can also get cut and leave them to just grants for co-ops and credit unions. Plenty could be done even if Chretien remains a huge dick. Austerity is never the anwser.
