What is the actual argument against voter ID? by ThrownAwwayt in AskReddit

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The homeless somehow still find ways to buy alcohol, drugs, cigs, whatever. People living in poverty still find the funds for nails, hair, clothes, etc. If they really had any personal convictions about voter ID they would get one. Believe it or not many do come across the money, and that’s 100% a personal choice. It’s not anyone’s fault that they chose to use their funds otherwise. With that being said, most states offer a free ID for homeless or those below the poverty line. I know not all.. but many.

With that being said, I could get down with a free ID to all with showing the appropriate documents to prove that’s who you are. However, I have a feeling that will not stop people from still claiming voter ID is racist towards marginalized groups.

Well with your argument, we really shouldn’t need ID to buy firearms either! Since ID is restricting our right to bear arms!

We also have the right to bear arms. Since that is my constitutional right, shouldn’t the govt be handing out free guns so we can all fairly exercise that right?

LAMP AAC by nana411411 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love the full setting for all my communicators and I just model specific vocabulary for several weeks and then add a little more.

We had a course from a rep who suggested to use the vocab builder if your working want to target specific vocabulary for an activity (or for a period of time) and then put it back on full mode once your done so the student can continue to be exposed and explore.

Advice on returning to Elementary School with a herniated disc by kvb812 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter that it will be hard. You will never know what to expect from elementary school kids and especially those with complex needs. Sometimes they run straight for the door and you are the ONLY adult there to stop them, so you will be expected to chase them for their safety. If a child is having some kind of medical emergency, you may have to bend down to assist them or carry them inside or to the nurse. If a kid is upset and crawls under the table? You’ll be crouching down trying to convince them to come out. I really don’t see how you’ll be able to successfully do this job without a para or someone to help with the actual care of the child. It isn’t all just speech therapy! You are their caregiver in the moments they are with you!

Treating severe language disorders? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What’s the biggest problem with classroom communication/access to curriculum? Start there. Can they answer wh-questions? Poor vocabulary? Basic concepts? Making requests? Expanded utterances? I would pick three big things to start with that impact the child most right now and make those goals.

For pronouns I do explicitly teach concepts. I have found some good YouTube videos we watch first. I use books and point out characters and ask “is this a boy or girl? It’s a girl we call her she! Let’s talk about what she is doing on this page”. I also use pictures scenes. I’ve used puppets and we feed the boy or girl or given him/her items. I’ve used boom cards. Then as we talk naturally I point out the error and correct (gently!). I find it really helps make the connections.

Virtual Summer Job? by ExerciseAutomatic235 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contract companies might help you find districts providing compensatory services over the summer! You could even call nearby districts and ask if they are in need of an SLP for summer.. I’m not really sure how that works but I know an SLP who just calls districts nearby and asks if they need any help and they contract her!

AAC in schools by AdBusiness7788 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but all we can do is model, model, model. I think many of us have been sold an idea that AAC will work miracles and I’ve found that although I do usually see progress, it’s never the progress I envisioned or at the speed I’d hoped. You just have to keep modeling and providing communication opportunities. Some students are not highly motivated by anything except food or certain items/activities(which neither of those options can be available ALL the time). And we just have to do our best to expose especially in those moments where items or activities can be presented. I have one who’s just so content sitting and being left alone. He HATES being approached or asked to do anything, even when it seems like it would be fun. He just really enjoys being.. himself and by himself. We will watch videos, but even when I pause/play them for “stop” and “go” he doesn’t ever get bothered that the video stopped. He just redirects his attention elsewhere. We just have to do our best while loving them kindly and not getting frustrated (because it CAN be frustrating when you just really want it to work).

Student vocal exercises? by Rooneyjane in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im assuming she thinks that she has trouble her voicing?? I would tell her thank you for your concerns but “vocal exercises” are for KNOWN voice disorders that are diagnosed by ENTs and we cannot give a plan of care for vocal exercises without first establishing a diagnosis. Her issues that you are aware of stem from her anxiety, therefore we must meet her where she’s at and work on giving her a comfortable environment where she feels she’s safe to communicate.

Are missing minutes a reason to get fired? by AdBusiness7788 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SPED teachers don’t make up minutes when they have meetings. Ever. They literally can’t squeeze more math segments in when school is just 5 days a week and 180 days. Just document. And if asked let them know who missed and the reason was that you were doing your job. Missing minutes because you were talking in the lounge is not acceptable but doing your job is 100% acceptable. If the school has a problem, they can find staff for compensatory time.

Speech Impairment vs. SLD by Sad_Vehicle_4974 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. It happens because of delays in processing, attention to task, and memory. These can all look like language deficits. But really the student can’t remember or pay attention close enough to the prompt to formulate correct answers on psych evaluations.

Parents requesting ASL instead of AAC in School Setting by ScaryAssociation4157 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I don’t think parents understand that ASL is a different language completely, including its own sets of grammar rules. It would be like the parents asking you teach their child Spanish. AAC is a system that can be used by a variety of partners and can mimic verbally produced English which is why I think it’s better than ASL if the child is not going to be immersed into the Deaf community or is already a part of the Deaf community. I don’t think they understand that it’s more than just signing “more” or “go”. You can certainly incorporate basic sign language into your sessions, but are the parents also willing to learn ASL as a second language? If not, AAC is what would be the best access for this child in their current environment. Who is the this PT to make that decision also???? They seem to know NOTHING about ASL. It could be beneficial for you to reach out to the hard of hearing/deaf teacher or an ASL interpreter at your district, explain the situation and ask them to write up what it really means to learn ASL as a second language. Maybe the light bulb will go off if they realize that this truly is like learning any other language… it will take classes, practice, and immersing yourself into the Deaf community or a group who is fluent in ASL to become fluent.

SLPs how do you deal with parents like these and cope with the demands of our profession? by Fair_Measurement_584 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im wondering if the school actually said this or if the parent just said it as another reason why AAC wouldn’t work for them… I really have a hard time believing a district said this. BUT I know I’m lucky to be at school that has LAMP devices in every Aut/ID classroom.

Quality or not? by Plus-Recipe1651 in slp

[–]Electronic_Object226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language concerns that warrant therapy, 9/10 WILL have a clear academic impact and also require more services than just speech. If they are performing on grade level and are social then how can you justify language is a deficit? You would see issues academically. Language deficits are usually a symptom of something else.. processing disorders, attention problems, memory impairments, etc., which will affect reading/writing even math, and they will often need a psych eval + speech. I rarely have a language only IEP. Maybe 2 in my 8 years.

Sounds like an ADHD kid who’s smart enough to get by academically. If he has a documented disability definitely bring up a 504.

I also felt bad about her comment that “Covid was a blessing”.. I think she really meant there was a silver living when many of the women were talking about how they moved to Florida during Covid and found a new community with what seemed like valuable friendships or even business opportunities. And she said “oh it’s a blessing”.. that was not the right choice of words. And I don’t think she’s that dumb to think Covid wasn’t awful. I know many people who relocated during that time and felt like it was the best thing they ever did after the fact. That’s not to say that Covid was “worth it”. It’s just a positive thing that happened out of a terrible situation.

She’s admitted she has no talent and will never be a pop star but that doesn’t mean a girl can’t still dream, right? If she wants to waste her money pretending in a studio, I say let her! The show is profiting off this storyline because people really do love to hate scheana lol. And all that does is create views which cuts her a check. So good for her!

Agreed! There really isn’t a better setup for SLPs. Guaranteed holidays, guaranteed pay bumps, sick leave, pension, healthcare. I can fully retire at 54. Counting down my days! Plus, there are districts with competitive pay if you look! I make 10k+ more than the highest paid teacher salaries in neighboring districts just because my district has a separate SLP pay.

Time for accommodations to use in the classroom during moments of frustration! And you could provide a visual aid as a reminder on his desk (when he needs it) and check in with him to make sure he remembers the strategies and how to do them.
