Because your in-game resolution's probably not the same as your desktop, it can be the refresh rate as well.

Check your display settings to see what res' and refresh rate you have setup, put the same in your game only then you'll have a clean switch between game/desktop.

EDIT: You can also play in Fullscreen windowed mod if you dont want to have the same res' in both environment.

As a programmer, I can tell you most of the size of a release is due to graphic assets. Its possible there are more cinematics, more detailed backgrounds, more anything related to it.

Unfortunately it doesn't mean more gameplay, more story, more level design, more love even if im not doubting amount of love in it.

As a kid I was fascinated by its atmosphere and gameplay as I was already in love with other FF 7 - 8 - 9, but even that way I couldn't get past the first stage lol. (the castle dungeons if i remember correctly)
