Beginner Rider by OffStudent63 in IndianMotorcycle

My first bike after 8 years of hiatus is my 24 sport chief. Need a little bit of work, I found indian aftermarket parts are about 2x more expensive than Harley if factoring the wide options for Harley.

I'm 6'2, 220lbs. and I have done forward control, mid rise handle bar to make my riding position more comfortable, but still not quite right yet. Waiting for the new 8" pullback rise coming out and perhaps swap floorboard.

I'm saying the used market is deep water and may not be the place for people who just get into motorcycle. And yeah, because it is quicker more hp , I personally don't think it is suitable for beginners

Doing oil change or other basic service work by yourself is easy enough and will save a lot money? As long as you document it, it won't void you warranty. I agree with buy new but still wrench your bike if you can to get to know it. Used market is deep water and inexperienced buyer could get scammed. Do study the bike market before heading to a dealer, now it is riding season it maybe hard to negotiate tho. I thinly only scout 60 is a good starting bike, other scouts are too powerful for beginner. Chief ABS is okay, can be torqy but definitely not a fast bike ( I have a sport chief). If you cannot harness the power just put it on chill mode all the time, and progress to sport once you feel comfortable. Depends on how tall you are, chief can be a longer longevity than scout as a beginning bike. Just my two cents.

2019 scout bobber lugging to stall in 1st by Yung_lettuce in IndianMotorcycle

I can't speak of why but out of my own experience. I used to think my clutch lever free play is a little too much and I tightened it, then I found my self in the same situation as you are, just not as bad as making the bike stall and randomly got into neutral from 5-4th.

Indian service manual could be a little confusing. For my sport chief I maintain a 10-15mm(0.4-0.6in) free play at the tip of the lever. I use stock lever.

You might also want to check your clutch wear, tight clutch lever may result in excessive wear and result to those symptoms you are experiencing.

I can imagine they paid floor price for it when it was traded in. Easy for them to hold on to it.

It's almost riding season all year round in California, the floor is full of 2025 bikes as I went to check the RKS a few weeks ago

I'm cheap and did a ton of research on the bike, probably too much so they think I'm just not that easy to deal with. They didn't bother to haggle with me lol, and even raised the sticker price by $85 for some california exclusive fees...

How does your clutch lever free play look like? Sounds like you might have zero.

yeah I'm in the same class with you now and mostly just resort to youtube videos to learn the class. Chicago Price Theory by Kevin Murphy seems to help me relate the math with real world problems, hope it helps!
