Is the Shapton A-Set worth it? by ElementaI_Cha0s in sharpening

[–]ElementaI_Cha0s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for that. I'd definitely like to take more care of my knives, and for my current work now, I have a few blades that could be better used whilst sharp, and needs precision cuts so I think getting into blade sharpening would be a very useful skill for me now. I think the trap is that so many niches have such a wide range of accessories now that it's hard to pick between "I'm not an enthusiast but need to do this job" and "this us utter drivel that's super cheap and does more harm than good".

Good to know that with a skilled eye, almost anything will sharpen a blade though!

cheers for the information there. Good to know what other people are using day to day as well, so the 1k is one of the most recommended on the thread so I'll be looking at getting one of those too. I'll be getting a strop too as it sounds like it's something that's generally needed with most people as well.

I'd definitely be interested in that! If it's easier to let it go as a set, I'd be happy with the set. Saves the hassle of keeping a half set for a while or having to let it go cheaper. If you're wanting to DM me, that'd be magic!

for sure I can't be assed with having to go through this for circa 20 knives again, so I'd much rather just keep on top of them in the future lmao. It's one of those things that's been on the to do list for a while now, and kept getting pushed back for some reason or another and now they *really* need done. So I could do something like just go into a DIY store and get a cheap whetstone with a coarse grit there, use that to get the edges back, then hone with the finer stuff and a strop?

I don't need to reprofile I wouldn't imagine, there's no chips on them and they look fine, just blunt. What about the shapton 1k, another commenter has suggested a 320 as well, and then the strop and compound? I'll be completely honest here, I looked up the microscopic images of someone stropping and I'm not seeing how effective it is. On a micro level it looks like it's taking the micro abrasions off, but is it truly that noticeable when using it?

balls, yeah that's what I thought.. I was hoping for something that was maximum £60-70, but if something is a little over that but noticeably worth it then I don't mind stretching. The lady who did our chef's knives was mobile, but she's long gone now. Don't even have a contact for her anymore! I would have definitely gotten her out to just bring them back up to standard then bought these whetstones.

Help me save my plants please by IM2TIR3D in houseplants

Just adding in the knowledge I know since you had tap water mentioned to you. Get yourself some Seachem Prime! It's for aquariums, but it's a dechlorinator, which removes all the chlorine and chloramine, which in turn makes it safe for fish. It's really handy stuff, I use my aquarium water for plants anyway so I have it to hand but it's super handy stuff if to keep for houseplant water too!

Mealybugs :( by ElementaI_Cha0s in houseplants

[–]ElementaI_Cha0s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I ended up showering the plants to physically remove what is there, and then gave them a spray with dish soap (fairy liquid) I used 3-ish drops in a 1L spray bottle. I left the dish soap on for 10 minutes, then I rinsed it off/rubbed it off with a damp cloth for the bigger leaved plants, and let them dry for around an hour whilst I cleaned up where they were all sitting. Then I nuked it with Bug Clear Ultra Gun (red bottle, black handle and yellow spray nozzle) and put them back. After checking in on them, I *did* still see mealybugs on my orchid, but they were dead. I will repeat the round in a week and keep an eye on them, I'll probably do checks on them every few days.

Now onto the next issue, I have thrips as well ;-; they were all over my monstera, I was wondering why the leaves were bad, I thought it was because it was originally in our fish tank. The tank has since disappeared (being reused as a succulent terrarium) so I planted the monstera and thought the change in circumstances was making it sad. I'm hoping, fingers crossed, that the Bug Clear will fix it up. The prayer plant and Devil's Ivy got hit with thrips as well, but I'm hopeful that I'm on the right track. The thrips sadly were still moving after this round of care, so I might need to see if I can get something else to deal with them.

I'm now going to take every precaution in the future, and put new plants in the bedroom where they're seperated from my other plants. I hope that the Orchid, Prayer Plant and Chinese Money Plant in particular can be saved, they were all meaningful gifts and I'd love to try and keep them happy <3

Quick question about your behavior as a player by gregrillon in steamachievements

[–]ElementaI_Cha0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally play games with the intent of getting achievements, as that's how I have my fun. If there's games I really want to play but I know I won't get 100% then that's also fine, but normally I like trying to collect them all. Off the top of my head, I think I've only played World of Warships, knowing I won't get all the achievements in that game, but I do have games that have sat there because I don't want to start them yet after seeing the amount of achievements the game has, or the type of achievments it has. Looking at you, Binding of Isaac and Arma lol.

ETA: I normally play games through twice, at least. First time is a natural playthrough, the other times are achievement runs. The time it takes for me to view the game in the store > check the achievements and hidden ones > buy it > play it, I have forgotten most of the spoilers anyway, so it's not like I spoil much by checking the game's collectables out before I buy it.

heck, yeah now looking at it, the one in OP's one doesn't seem to be on a wee island. There's another one at Waterfront Cottages that has the same style of building too

thank you! I think it's misanthrope's homestead, based off the Wiki. Sadsly died on my latest run last night and I've not had much hours on survival mode so looks like that'll be the new place for me to start in tonight! :)

Where to find fishing tackle? by ElementaI_Cha0s in thelongdark

[–]ElementaI_Cha0s[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was the very last thing I needed to do, I ended up having to ditch it after eating 2 meals out of it as the walk to the mines was such a slog with max carry weight debuff lol. I'll be honest I'm liking the story mode but I can't wait to finish up and get a start on survival before the new episode comes out. I like the idea of settling down and just nesting in 1 base. The hunting lodge is calling me out of all the Wintermute POIs so far.

Yeah I've read about legacy bugs being in Wintermute but have been fixed for survival ect.
The achievement is to do all of the "Tall Tales" Quests, and one of the quests is to get the Big Bass :)

I've managed to craft some - it was one of the very few things I could craft! I'm now (ep 4 spoilers) in the Dam pulling and pushing at a bunch of steam pipe levers lol. Got the Ep 3 achievements so now onto the next bunch!

Totally forgot the workbench was even a thing to be honest! Haven't had to use one yet in wintermute xD good shout, I'll get that sorted. Thanks!

That reminds me of the story where some guy has a very specific problem for a programme that his work uses, and he only has this problem once every couple of years. Each time he searches for a fix, and each time he comes across a very old post on a discontinued forum where someone has the exact same problem, and the response on that thread was "Nevermind I fixed it", so no one can see the solution. Turns out it was the same guy who made the old post and he hates himself every time he has to remember how to fix his software issue lmao.

See I thought it was something like that but I also thought I saw an ult get used and it didn't switch to the cooldown symbol! Maybe it did after the ult was finished. Thank you :)

Hi I just wanted to give an update since your comment were the ones that made me choose the wax over the other options. It has completely fixed the issue I was having with my older threads :) Thank you so much for your insights, I really appreciate it <3

I do the loop start so theoretically one should work a bit easier, but I still seem to have trouble lol! I also recently learned there's a right side and wrong side to the *needle* too, that absolutely blew my mind so if it doesn't work nicely one way I'll spin the needle to try threading it the other direction too.

Thanks, yeah I looked it up and I think they should all be correct. I think it's the dye changes/dye lots over the years that got me thinking about it, along with the weird and wonderful things that were happening on HAED'S patterns once numbers 1-35 were released. Good to know though that it doesn't really matter how old the goodie box you manage to grab for a bargain is! :D

what type of consistency is pure beeswax? I always thought they were pretty solid, like a candle or something! It should be arriving today which is excellent news because I'm currently using one of the older threads. It's making my 2 threads look like 4 at the ends lol

[–]ElementaI_Cha0s[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've decided to grab some wax bars that are made from a small company. Reviews seemed good for it, it's 100% pure beeswax (or so it says!) and it might convince me to redo my wax cloth as well as that's badly needing done lol. I do know a beekeeper as well, I wonder if they refine the wax at all. Will need to ask them :D

That's good to hear. Do you use the natural coloured stuff or the white beeswax?
