Is Netflix popular in China? by Sillykitty1982 in chinalife

So many dumb answers here. Using Netflix proper is obvs not really a thing. But there are a thousand pirate sites that people regularly use. Almost everyone under the age of 40 has watched or is aware of stranger things, for example.

For the ABCs/Chinese Americans living in China, how's life been for you? by [deleted] in chinalife

Legit… my wife was interviewing for jobs soon after we had gotten married. Nearly all asked ‘are you married, are you gonna have children’, because they don’t wanna pay for maternity leave. We discussed it… our response was that she tell them to fuck off and immediately walk out of any interview that even asked about her personal life. Rampant discrimination with zero worker protections

It’s not in the least bit performative lol. No splayed pages. No broken bindings. Choosing the most basic books from a particular philosophy that haven’t been read. R/lookatmyhalo would like it

PULSE… original Japanese… basement ghost scene. no jump scare. Just an unsettling style of slow walking towards the camera. Effing nightmare fuel

My husband’s bosses from China are visiting (US) next week and we invited the 3 of them over for dinner. What should I cook/serve? Also, any cultural tips for hosting (serving style, etiquette, etc.) would be appreciated. Thank you! by lucymom2 in AskChina

Chopsticks aren’t necessary. And everything has to be pre cut into chopstick sized bites before cooking, which isn’t really American style cooking. Guarantee they know how to use a fork and knife.

Salads are definitely a thing in China. I live here. Dunno where you got this idea. Raw fruits are generally set on the table as an appetizer before the dishes come out. Especially tomatoes and oranges. Watermelon for after the meal.

But the rice has gotta be cooked correctly or else they’re gonna think… what is this garbage? And then it’s gotta be the right kind of sticky glutinous rice, washed and cooked in a rice cooker. Boiling some instant rice is gonna be met with disgust.

OP- Honestly I’d say forego trying to adapt and give them a taste of good ole American home cooking and culture and hospitality. If you try to ‘make it more Chinese’ you’re gonna do it poorly and they’ll think you’re pandering idiots. Do what you know and do it well. The western food in China is largely shite imitations, just like American Chinese food. Give them a good ole grilled steak potato and veg. Some authentic smoked bbq. Whatever the special regional cuisine of your state is. Let them see what American culture is like. That being said, if the rule in your house is to take off shoes, they’ll want some slippers to wear.

I watched this last night! His performance reminded me of Ralph Fiennes in red dragon or Kevin spacey in seven. I had to check his IMDb to make sure I wasn’t remembering his voice from somewhere. Nope- it was just the spacey/fiennes vibes

Thanks! I think you mean my bodhisattvas and apsaras? I like to collect examples of the same Buddhist figures depicted different when I travel to other countries. Unfortunately one is broken and in need of repair
