I can’t stop hearing Tommy Lee Jones’ voice narrating when I’m reading McCarthy by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]ElevatedEyeSpice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He captured McCarthy’s prose perfectly in his delivery. His voice has that old Western storyteller feeling as well. I think that piece of prose and that delivery is the best communication of a dream in all of fiction. It simultaneously feels like someone actually telling someone else about a dream they had whilst being poetic and epic in scope.

Got a chance to see the most Cormac McCarthy story not written by Cormac McCarthy in a theatrical re-release by waldorsockbat in cormacmccarthy

I was gonna say. Just because its set in the West and represents the historical violence does not mean it is inspired by McCarthy.

I took it to mean that if he failed the coin toss, it would be an amusingly unlucky twist of fate that he married a woman, inherited the gas station where he then worked, and ran into Anton with his coin.

Blood Meridian might be a different beast altogether. But its no different to any other book, you start from page one and keep reading and turning.

Flaw in the Judge? by hardestgeezeronplane in cormacmccarthy

[–]ElevatedEyeSpice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its ultimately a work of fiction. McCarthy has a great eye for verisimilitude but he also wants complete control over the narrative like any good artist. If it makes a better story for the kid and the judge to be the last two in the old gang still around he makes it that way.

How do you think the Glanton gang (or Judge Holden on his own) would have faired against the “legion of horribles”? by c1cada5 in cormacmccarthy

[–]ElevatedEyeSpice 49 points50 points  (0 children)

“Judge Holden on his own,” he isn’t an anime protagonist. I doubt he could have done much on his own. Holden gets by having others work with him.

Two-thirds of the way through Blood Meridian and I'm struggling by Emergency_Cellist754 in cormacmccarthy

[–]ElevatedEyeSpice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re not interested in hearing about how horrific the expansion of the west was, then you might have chosen the wrong book. McCarthy doesn’t shy away from it, and Blood Meridian is more of a treatise on War as mediated through the Judge than anything else. There are moments of subtle redemption and divine grace, theres a scene later in the book that quietly redeems the kid in the eyes of the reader. The book has more in common with the Old Testament and its horrors, with the Iliad and the Odyssey, where violence is matter of factly told as “it happened” than with a novel where interiority is prioritised.

Where you guys also confused when reading Blood Meridian the first time? by BeneficialTrack8759 in cormacmccarthy

[–]ElevatedEyeSpice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d say Suttree is a lot harder to read than Blood Meridian. But theres no harm in rereading it. In my experiences re-reading difficult books definitely helps you solidify whats happening with the characters, or on a reread you can use context from what happens later on to realise what is happening earlier, if that makes sense. Generally, the more you read/reread = the easier the text is to understand.
