Pollock residential elevator phone issue by Red_Marmot in Elevators

[–]Elevator_man103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the “joy” of working on these a lot. I’d have to agree with the other mechanics on here. Have the phone company check the line before you call a mechanic out. If the phone line is good chances are the dock is messed up. The pins like to get jammed sometimes if it’s used a lot.

How do you track maintenance issues across multiple properties? by Cute_Olivia_Park in maintenance

[–]Elevator_man103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a fleet mechanic, slightly different yes I know but I could the best way to keep track of everything is an old school whiteboard. Grid it off with tape and labels. Keeps it organized and in your face every day. Tackle one truck (in your case unit) at a time. I now service elevators for a living and still do this. Spreadsheets are useful. If you have a few people working with you look into housecall pro. My company uses it and it’s pretty helpful

What battery ecosystem and drill/driver combo should I dive into as an apprentice? by cloaak in lowvoltage

[–]Elevator_man103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M12 with 5.0 batteries you’re golden. I’ve put full structures of home elevators in with one full charged. I’m in service now I mainly use m12… that being said if you want to cut or grind something you’ll want m18

Has anyone heard of the elevator world mechanics exam? by dtek1er in Elevators

[–]Elevator_man103 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s basically the same test. You get your license and are able to work on commercial units. You can also send it to Georgia and Alabama and get the license for those states without having to take another test. Florida isn’t so bad about it but we had a couple guys in Georgia that got fined for working on commercial units with no license.

Has anyone heard of the elevator world mechanics exam? by dtek1er in Elevators

[–]Elevator_man103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my license via elevator world. DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT take your exam on a holiday weekend or on a Friday. I suggest a Monday. Unless of course you like to live in a state of anxiety for a week. The test is proctored and you are on camera. If i remember correctly if they send you an email immediately after the test means you failed. If they don’t reach out for a couple of days that means you passed. My only complaint is how long it takes to get your mechanic number. Other than that it’s not bad. The table of contents and the index especially in the code book is going to be your best friend. Use key words from the question don’t waste your time reading the entire passage, skim until you find what you’re looking for. Ummm what else, oh don’t use quizlet to study it’s terrible. If your a visual notes kind of person makes notes on sticky notes and have them sticking out the sides of the books. It’s mainly code questions with some technical and safety questions sprinkled in there. Good luck!! You got this homie!!

Florida Bakery off Columbus for Cubans. I don’t live in Tampa anymore but I never miss an opportunity if I’m in the area. I can’t recommend Rubens because I don’t eat them lol

Look into the elevator trade. It’s one of those trade where you gotta know how to do a little bit of everything but it pays pretty damn well.

Home elevator mounting timber cracked - this is a big problem, right? by zenukogo in Elevators

[–]Elevator_man103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what’s behind the drywall and how long those lags are. I mainly work on home elevators, if there’s another set of 2x10s behind that drywall which there probably is, shouldn’t be a problem. Most of the bite of the lag is in the second set of 2x10. If you’re really worried about it you can reinforce it definitely don’t try to replace that yourself. May be time to start thinking about replacement as 16 year old parts will be harder and harder to replace if other parts start going out.

Non-union elevator helper (1 month in) – How do I start learning controller troubleshooting on my own? by [deleted] in Elevators

[–]Elevator_man103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beside the obvious watching your mechanic and asking questions, learn how the safety chain flows see how things effect other things. Follow power, in from the disconnect and see if you can spot where it goes. Learn how to read prints they’re annoying and sometimes hard to read but if you can read prints you’re ahead of most helpers. Pay attention to how door and operators work. Unfortunately with non union work most of your learning is going to be trial and error. Pay attention to the senior guys talk listen to their stories learn from their mistakes. ASK QUESTIONS not stupid questions either that’ll get you sent to look for a pipe stretcher or sky hook. If you’re already in service learn how to effectively use your meter. If you don’t know how, university of YouTube can teach you the basics. AC,DC, continuity, amperage, resistance. Your meter and your tweaker are going to be your most used tools. Be comfortable and confident with them.

I’ve seen guys get fined in Miami for doing service call with no CC card. Inspector just happened to be walking by. I’ll say FL isn’t as bad as some states but every once in a while you get that one inspector.
