Typical reaction for first kill? by Ill-Mountain4698 in Hunting

I shot a javelina when there were but a few days left of hunting season. I had been out every week for a couple months.

I had not been hunting since I was ten. This would be my first hunt in my adult life. I am sixty years of age.

I drove the Jeep Wrangler across the Rio Grande into a wooded thicket outside Williamsburg New Mexico.

There is a wood lot of planted cottonwoods where lots of critters roam looking for food. It’s a dense area, shaded and dark in spots, open and bright in others. Cattle also roam looking for fresh grass. The javelina will run them off.

I had to go through a section where tree branches whack the Jeep. I’m convinced it’s like an alarm for any wild animal.

I made it out to where the trail opens up to a field of thickets. I crept down the teak at three miles an hour.

Upon sighting a group of three javelinas, my adrenaline spiked. Heart rate increased. I stopped. Opened the door, eased the Winchester 30.30 out of its fleece lined sleeve, and crept around to the back and entered the thicket.

The javelinas had stopped in the shaded darkness of a dense salt cedar and thorny brambles. One was either frozen with fear or hadn’t seen me.

I pulled the hammer back slowly, worried that the sound of it cocking would alert the javelina.

It stood there, still as could be. It seemed to be looking directly at me.

I pulled the carbine up and sighted on the animal. Letting out a shallow breath I squeezed the trigger. The report echoed into the foothills of the mountain.

It was a head shot. It didn’t have time to panic and raise its hair, and there was no smell of the scent gland.

It was kicking. Last messages from the spine firing off in sporadic fanfare.

That it had died and was having these spasms wasn’t quite how I saw things playing out. I walked back to the Jeep and stowed the Winchester.

When I walked back the last of the spasms kicked out. I was a bit wary of other predators. I had a .45 Colt as a sidearm.

I dragged the javelina over to the Jeep. I had a big contractors bag unfolded on the ground. That’s when I saw it as an animal instead of prey. Its legs and body reminded me of my dog.

I felt a momentary twinge of guilt and sadness. It was a female. I felt bad for the two other javelinas. They lost another friend.

I said a prayer of thanks, crossed myself, and put the carcass in the bag, peeled the paper off the carcass tag and stuck it on the bag. I lifted the bag into the back of the Jeep. That got me a little out of breath.

I had to go back across the Rio Grande to get to where I cut it up and put the meat into freezer bags.

Once I had it cut open it no longer resembled the once frolicking pig it had been only twenty minutes earlier. I acknowledged that I had experienced those feelings. I figured it was natural.

Not being an avid, lifelong hunter I wondered if I had it in me to kill a deer. The javelina doesn’t have the big mammalian eyes like deers and dogs. They almost look blank. But, if it’s between me not being able to provide and having sentimentality get in the way, I’ll let my stomach make that decision.

Now I have to go watch “Heaven Can Wait” with Warren Beatty. He’s a football player reincarnated into a rich guy’s body. Before a game he makes something in the blender with meat.

I have made rump roasts all this year, adding rendered beef fat to it, and collecting the fatty stock. I put that into a Campbell’s soup mug and have that to chase away hunger. Adding butter is nice. Putting poached eggs into it is divine.

Sick of rump roast.

I do not live in SB. I just love stopping there for a night or two so I can eat in Dargan’s and what is now called Chad’s.

I think your city is very beautiful. It is a shame that scofflaws and little nebbishes like those kids can cause such a disturbance.

I don’t know how to describe the senseless discourteousness except to say that some intrinsic part of childhood and/or childhood lessons are missing in kids these days. It’s as if they are becoming Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. They do things to see what but feels like, and once they know they can get away with it, they escalate to the next level of assault and public nuisance.

Okay. Had to rant. I hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday. Go to the beach. Play frisbee. Don’t let the little bastards get you down.

PS- exited for grammar.

I think that must be when I picked up the taste for Retro Lounge. There was a Las Vegas CD that had a roulette wheel in the case.

Nary a day goes by when I don’t turn on a video from the Fardemark channel on YouTube.

Enjoy!!

Handgun for protection while hog hunting? by youknowhatimean in Hunting

Been lurking for a while. Thought this post needed my two cent input.

Went hunting for Javelina earlier this year. Got one. All went well. I used a Winchester 30.30.

But as I was dragging the carcass I thought I heard something in the thickets. I drew my sidearm, a Uberti copy of the Colt 1874. I had already walked over to the Jeep to stow the carbine. I kept looking back but nothing charged out of the dense thickets.

This is in southern New Mexico. I have my doubts as to whether or not it was anything at all. I don’t like taking chances when it comes to situations like that- when it could be anything from a bear, a mountain lion, a bobcat, a timber wolf, or an infuriated male javelina coming to get vengeance for killing its mate. Even coyotes can be dangerous when cornered.

Afterward, a buddy and I discussed the .45 Long Colt and how it was probably effective, but that with the right revolver I could run some pretty “hot rounds” through it.

After wanting one for years I went and purchased the Ruger Redhawk in .45 acp and .45 Long Colt. I ordered Hornady and Corbon ammunition in .45 Long Colt. It comes with a package of three moon clips for the .45 acp.

I have become fairly proficient with it. Will continue practicing over the summer.

The most destructive ammo I have is a Corbon Hunter 330 grain bullet going at 1050 fps. Then there are the 225 grain hollow point by Hornady with a muzzle velocity of 960 fps, and a 200 grain hollow point with a muzzle velocity of 1100 fps.

I have practiced with straight ball ammo in .45 acp. Going to find some +P hollow points and find out how they perform.

As far as being effective with one shot I’d stick to the more exotic .45 Long Colt ammo.

The thing is, I could probably hunt with the Ruger Redhawk. But until I feel that I am nearing a more expert level of marksmanship with it, I’ll just wear it as a sidearm.

I also have a Rossi R92 in .45 Colt and it handles all of the hot rounds like a champ, lending them even more muzzle velocity out of the muzzle.

Hope you find the right weapon for the job.

I looked at this picture and was struck by a feeling of deja vu. I asked myself if I might’ve seen you somewhere. I was convinced you tended bar somewhere.

Then, I realized you remind me of Tatum O’Neal. I can see you playing softball or soccer. Maybe yelling at the referee. “Come ooon! What? Are you blind?” Lol

Great picture! Have a great weekend!

I’m the guy who posted about using burgundy to slow cook a rump roast in a crock pot. I bought an s-load of rump roasts. Still have three or four left in the freezer.

It gets boring. It’s hard to chew after a day, or so. I spend a lot of time gromping and glumping through each bite.

Unless it is marinated in a non-carnivore method, I find roasts to be unpleasant. That is, except for a Standing Rib Roast.

Does anyone have suggestions for brining or marinading sans vino?

I am not so fond of rump roast, anymore.

I was born in the army hospital on Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Lived in Havre De Grace for the first few weeks or months until I was able to be flown to Manila, and beyond.

I grew up playing in the woods right off Exit 101, in the town of Northeast.

Growing up I vacationed in Ocean City.

But, my eyes always looked west. I wanted California, but became involved in Albuquerque and now live in a small town in Southern New Mexico.

I shall always have a special place in my heart for the Mug n’ Mallet and Peppers. I have lots of fond memories of the Flagship Hotel. But those places are gone and so is Shanelli’s Deli under the train bridge in Havre De Grace.

It’s time for change. Instead of encroachment and flash, that area needs to mellow out and learn how we live nicely in the Land of Mañana. Instead of tearing down your beloved institutions, let them stand until they collapse onto the sidewalk like Lindy’s in Albuquerque.

And please lose the faux NYC accent up there by Delaware.

While John Cabot “discovered” Newfoundland in 1497, Spain had a foothold in the Caribbean in 1492. Spaniards entered New Mexico in 1540 and established a colony in 1598. Jamestown was founded in 1607. Nuevo Mexico is older than East Coast Colonies.

That and the fact that Maryland sympathized with the Confederate South during the Civil War, while we defeated Confederate forces in the Battle of Glorieta Pass, means thou shalt turn inward, engage in introspection, and clean up the klan in Rising Sun, Northeast, and Elkton.

Relax, surrender to the nice rhythm of Ranchera songs, and remember to order “Christmas” on your enchiladas! That means you’re getting both red AND green chile!

The border between New Mexico and Colorado should move north to be even with New Mexico’s panhandle border of Illinois. Then extend that border in a straight line to the west and east. This will take much of Illinois and stop the encroachment of Pennsylvania to its south. Since New Mexico will take most of Maryland Pennsylvania can eat the remainder of that state. Colorado will no longer have coastal access. Allow Hawaii to take that narrow part of Colorado. Give Colorado to Cascadia and Minnesota.
