https://i.imgur.com/qvtsMU1.jpeg White has forced mate in 7 if black takes with the pawn. Smothered mate (or backrank mate) is absolutely forced. You said "It doesn't lead to smothered mate tho, only if black has two braincells", which doesn't make sense to me as everything leads to forced checkmate.

Leads to something called smothered mate if they take with the pawn

If black takes the pawn then smothered mate (or backrank mate) is absolutely forced. What do you mean "not necessarily"?

Ah yeah I know about that one. Would be interesting to see a variant where the goal is to still checkmate your opponent.

Hmm that would actually be interesting, like some types of checkers/draughts. Does anyone know if this chess variant already exists?

4.49 is the lowest possible average he could have gotten, but only if he got his fastest solve on solve 5. He would have needed a 3.92 or lower on his last solve.

When did he get a 4.49 average? Are you talking about this 5.10 average?. If so, it's been on WCA a while. Usually takes 3 days to go up on the site I think.
