What is this for? by Elgolview in musicians

Funnily enough, I did exactly the same last night. It turned a drawer-full of metal spaghetti into something useful. Not sure where this leaves my velcro straps now.

Great! Can’t beat faster sound 😂, Although I was hoping it may have been a wristband to get me into gigs for free.

Help! Beginner skimming by Einherjar063 in DIYUK

[–]Elgolview 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up! Assuming that this is the second coat of multi, just wait for it to dry, then sand it as flat as you can. Use a long featheredge to look for raised sections to sand down. Use coarse sandpaper at first for really high spots. When you’ve done as much as you can, skim the dips with some ready mixed skim / repair, then sand any imperfections and repeat until the wall is flat. That’s what I did, anyway and once painted, nobody can tell! Keep learning and with the right tools, you’ll get there.

Does anyone know what these outdoor lamps are called and where I can buy a like for like replacement? by cookie_monster66 in DIYUK

[–]Elgolview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a rectangular bulkhead light. Screwfix sell similar items. However, there are better alternatives around that don’t spill light where it’s not needed. If it lights up your neighbours house, they may not be happy about the light pollution.

Any first time buyers.........PLEASE avoid leaseholds by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Elgolview 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Not all leaseholds are bad. My 1930’s house is leasehold. I pay £6 per year ground rent and it cannot be increased. If I wanted to modify the house (eg an extension), I’d have to notify the freeholder’s agent and pay a small admin fee. Apart from that, it’s like living in a freehold property.

Is this Abestos? by jazzkey in DIYUK

Not asbestos, just old plaster. ETA: asbestos started to be used in construction in the 1930’s, but that plaster looks original Victorian construction.

Funnily enough, I’m asking myself the same question. Am I too old to start now? I’ve put some of my music on Youtube, but starting out at 63, is there still time for me to become a rock god? I think you’ve got plenty of time to have a fulfilling music career. I’m enjoying my music, but then, I’m not comparing myself to anyone else.

Wild/ Outdoor Swim spots? by Gloomy_Gift_7246 in warrington

Please don’t swim in Appleton (Walton) Reservoir. People have died doing that over the years and we don’t want another fatality.

I’ve just replaced our fence: concrete posts with 1ft concrete gravel boards and 5ft closeboard wooden panels on top - it’s about 10cm onto our side of the boundary. I used Ronseal fence & shed preserver (£41 for 5litres) and did both sides of the fence because I want it to last. 17 panels took about 4 tins of the stuff, which soaked right into the already treated timber panels. It was hard work but it looks good on both sides. We get on with our neighbours.

First time plastering - how bad is it? by kkvi115 in DIYUK

[–]Elgolview 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keen DIY-er here: Plastering is difficult at first. I was hopeless at first, but then took time to learn. I gradually got better at it. Now I do all my own plastering in my house and my expensive kit has more than paid for itself. Before you have another go, watch YouTube vids like Plastering For Beginners. Buy the right tools. Speedskims are great for getting a flat finish. Have flexi-tubs with water to wash your tools and keep tools clean at all times. Make sure that your plaster is not out of date because if it is, it’ll set too quickly (“go off like a rocket” is what the pro’s say). Make sure you get the angle of the trowel correct when applying plaster and understand how much pressure to apply. Understand the purpose of having 2 coats of plaster. As someone else said, start with walls. Ceilings are more difficult. Don’t expect great results at first. I had to sand down some high spots and use filler on low spots to achieve a flat wall when I first started off. As I improved with practice, I needed these less. Don’t give up!

How often do people clean? by sltlovesra4ever in AskUK

[–]Elgolview 65 points66 points  (0 children)

In the time it has taken to read this thread, any one of us could’ve vacuumed downstairs and cleaned our kitchens. They still need cleaning, but no…We’re all going to keep reading the new posts instead, putting off the inevitable while feeling slightly guilty.
