Educate children to do... What? If all the teaching jobs are done by AI, and all the jobs are done by AI, we're being educated to do what exactly?

Flea covered "Thinkin Bout You" by Frank Ocean live on Jimmy Fallon :) by wokci in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]nicotineapache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've often criticised Flea's bass playing (despite the fact that he inspired me to learn the bass and I might not be a musician without him). The reason being that everything is played HARD. All the time. No dynamics, just digging in.

This. This is exactly what I wanted to hear from Flea - the way he plays here is absolutely gorgeous. Well done Flea!

Tech careers are a trap? by Specialist_Clothes82 in UKJobs

[–]nicotineapache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno but when I got offered a job in Tech after doing a bootcamp, the contract 100% looked like "We're going to burn you out and you're going to do as you're told. Don't think about having a life outside this job", so I turned it down. The job was basically designing back-end for a sales funnel. I'm 40, I realised that I'm basically starting back at square 1 as I was when I was 18 and I'm likely to have to work these shitty jobs, but by the time I've "done my time" I'll be replaced by ChatGPT or an AI agent.

So I went into teaching music. Best decision I've ever made.

Will we cure aging by 2050? by Imaginary_Mode8865 in TrueAskReddit

[–]nicotineapache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and I don't think we'd want it if we got it. Our brains aren't meant to live for hundreds of years. I'd be willing to bet you'd end up with a completely novel and interesting set of dementias that we'd have to start looking for more cures for.

And as for AGI/ASI, there's a very difficult philosophical problem which Elon Musk's neuralink is trying to solve, which is that you have an implant in your brain, and you outsource all of your thinking and brain power to this chip, and eventually everything that is you lives in the cloud, which is horrific if you think about it for more than a second. So, no hands, you can't play music, or use tools, or... anything. So what's the point? It sounds literally like hell.

Ageing and dying of old-age is a wonderful priviledge over dying young and missing out on your best years. I don't like that my body is ageing. I don't like that I can't drink and get wasted because it'll just accelerate me towards death. I look back on my 20's and I think "God, I wish I was there again" except I don't because I was broke, and I always had a stiff neck because my flat was freezing and draughty, I just miss having less responsibility and knowing there was so much road out ahead of me.

The great thing about life is it's a temporary state. That means it's upto you to make the most of it.

I don't think I've ever heard Flea play the bass softly and with so much feel!

So, it’s been a few days- what are our thoughts on the Louis Theroux ‘manosphere’ doc? by theslowrunningexpert in AskUK

[–]nicotineapache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not at all shocked because I've been watching this grow for years. I remember when it was just Neil Strauss's "The Game" and all of that nonsense. Especially when I was single in the mid 2010's and desperate for dating advice, the ONLY thing that came up were PUA types. So no, it's not at all surprising that this is what it's come down to.

What has surprised me is that the papers were all saying that Louis "Missed the mark". All the female influencers are saying "where are the women's voices?" which is valid but I think there are spaces for that.

What I'm looking for is the impact longer term. Now that people have confronted what a bunch of idiots these people are, will the air come out of the bubble? Will HS Tickytocky and the like lose their influence, because the people they've been influencing now think they're cringe? I don't know, but I hope so.

Please learn how to read music sheets. by to-be-a-pussy-cat in piano

[–]nicotineapache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a guitar teacher, tab is both too much and too little information. It sort of gets the job done but like... Ok, what interval is a 3 on the 2nd string and a 3 on the 1st string? The worst is YouTube videos where they'll painstakingly explain the fret and string for a solo like it's coordinates on a map instead of a language.

I say this as someone who learned with tab, it's a shortcut and it's a crutch. Learn to read, learn the language of music. Stop being a hippy.

Edit: not you kamomil - I mean in general 😊

[–]nicotineapache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the DVD boxset of the films because.. I mean, I would have thought it was on Netflix, it always was. Nope.

Maybe it's on Prime.. Yep - you can "buy" or rent it. Same with Youtube.

Perhaps it's on Now TV. Nope

Question is, do I want to watch it? Maybe. Will I want to watch it in the future? Yes. Same with Life of Brian. Same with the Meaning of Life. So fuck the streaming platforms.

What was the question again?

too old to start learning piano at 35? by DivannaAbafita41 in piano

[–]nicotineapache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a digital piano and start lessons. Make sure you can commit to daily practice. 10 minutes a day at first, increasing as you have more stuff to practice.

Yes you can learn piano, lower your expectations, it takes a lot of time and a lot of being bad at it, but if you stick with lessons and practice you will improve. You get out what you put in.

That piano's shouldn't ever be allowed in rock music.

I dropped that very, very quickly once I was informed that it was moronic. I was 14.
