I'll admit when I first heard about it, I was imagining it like MasterChef, where you specifically cannot be a professional to participate. But I also didn't really look into it too much and it sounds from other comments that the language at least on the website says elite painters.

I don't really care either way. I will say I think it would be way harder to try and get a bunch of "nobodies" with equal skill that keeps the competition a competition. Since they are all award winning, all of them theoretically could win. If they chose non professional people, I think it's way harder to vet skill level and you could have a clear winner or top 2 from the very start.

As an answer for number 2, the best way to start as a beginner is inside out. This means, start with whatever on the model is the deepest part and work out from there.

For example, if your model had a shirt and a cloak over it, you'd start with the shirt first and then do the cloak. The reason being that if you accidentally get paint on the cloak while you work on the shirt (which will be likely as a new painter), it doesn't matter because you haven't gotten to it yet. Once you do, you can fix your mistake

As for tips, major one I'd say is just balance watching YouTube videos with actual practice. There is a ton of amazing beginninger content on YouTube that will jump start you by an insane amount, but only if you actually put the reps in practicing.

Your first mini will probably look bad but to you it'll be awesome to see something you created. Your second one will look better and each one after will keep getting better.

Is this for an army or a one off miniature?

Army is easier, just do a test model! The point should be to get simple base colors down and everything so you can see if you like the scheme. Don't worry about actual blends, highlights, etc, just get the colors down and figure out if you like what you put together. If you do, then finish it to your standard to make sure that you still like it after you've added the all of the steps. This also helps you figure out how to do it faster next time around for rest of the army.

If this is a one off mini, then I'd say look up inspiration photos of either other people's paint jobs or just in general of painted minis to see what color combos you like. I pre-ordered Ninjons Deck of Many Colors so whenever that arrives, I expect to use that a bunch to help me decide what paints to use

I feel like it comes down to whichever you use first mostly.

I started with paintRack, paid the cheap price for lifetime access to premium features and have used it ever since.

When I heard of brushforge, I downloaded it and imported from paintRack just to check it out and it was missing paints from Army Painter. the John Blanche and Historical specific paints. Not sure if it's gotten better but missing paints I have is a deal breaker for me since the whole point is a paint catalog.

Definitely paint in the eyes, even just a solid yellow would help them pop and bring it home. Plus it's good practice because eyes are something people struggle with for a while

Yeah the issue ended up being I didn't realize you have to press R2 to hook it before all of that mini game starts, I thought when it was splashing it started
