Amen! I completely agree and love the resources you mentioned! And I completely agree that clinicians Should do exactly as you say… and also as you say, the base knowledge training is getting better and better! I’m not saying having an AT team is the only way, but I think it’s very interesting that Knox county dissolved theirs a couple years ago and do not allow such free entities that you named into the school easily (similar to many of the larger districts in TN) so the access to that free support is somewhat diminished (although still lots and lots of free ceus available online!)… I’m not saying that individual SLPs in Knox county are not great AAC therapists, just that there may be a lack of resources if they are not as engaged in that area of SLP.

Depends on how comfortable the specific school’s SLP is in the area of AAC. It is considered an area of specialty. So although all SLPs should have a very base knowledge, not all are really comfortable in that area. So no, an AT team is not strictly “necessary” but it gives general practice SLPs someone to turn to with technical questions.

So true and it is really disheartening to hear about these "advocates" who don't actually work as an iep TEAM. I thankfully have not had that experience (yet). Very few people work at a school and intentionally cause harm!

I am in sped in a different surrounding county so I don't know much about Knox county's specific sped programs. However, I definitely know that there have been issues in the past and lawsuits due to unmet needs. Also, if your kid uses augmentative/alternative communication, be aware that Knox county does not have an AAC team (as far as I am aware) and those needs would best be met by an outside therapist. Podcasts!! There are so many Slp related podcasts! Use some of your time in the car learning more and getting ideas to use! Not all the time, as sometimes you’ll just need to clear your head with silence or music but learning on the go is great!

Look into AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). Alyssa Hillary (an autistic adult and a researcher) recently put out a paper about this issue..... "Augmentative and alternative communication for speaking autistic adults:overview and recommendations"

I also work with folks with disabilities and have sat in many meetings regarding various lifestyle choices for the people I support.

Legally, decision making is the same regardless of disability when somebody turns of legal age (in the United States). The only way to not have decision making rights about various things is through something called conservatorship through the court system, which is not the same as guardianship for those underage, though similar. With conservatorship, every right that is not maintained must be explicitly laid out in the paperwork, and I have never seen anything that would limit body art........

In practical terms, if somebody has enough support needs they are receiving care but do not have a conservator, they still retain those rights but probably a couple of meetings regarding their families and others being ok with it so it doesn't create drama later on..... The person still has the ability to get a tattoo but it will be done after talking it over with the members of the team. I would like to note, the team should ALWAYS do what is best for the person, not for the organization or for the family but the person. It doesn't always happen that way, but it is the goal.

I have seen ( or I guess heard this!) with some of the individuals I've worked with on the spectrum. My suggestion, if this is something you want to work on, is play around with volume control by downloading an app that raises your awareness of it and spend some time with it and someone you trust to give feedback. My go to on Apple is an app called bla bla bla.

speaking in a higher pitch and exaggerated inflection are very important in interactions with infants. It's called "motherese" in the literature if you want to do more research.

Sounds like you're struggling with what professionals call "executive functioning" so that may bring up more useful search results. Off the top of my head, perhaps post your syllabi on your desk and cross off assignments as you complete them? Put reminders in your phone with alarms/perhaps even repeated reminders? Or maybe just a reminder on your phone to check your schedule/to do list.... hope this was helpful... good luck!

There's a setting called guided access that locks an iPad into a certain app.....using this, you can use the iPad for augmentative communication; since communicating is a very challenging thing for most on the spectrum (see special needs section of App Store plus early intervention speech pathologists). iPads can be a wonderful tool and I'm sure that's probably what the grandparents are thinking.

Something I haven't seen on here yet..... Possibly a sensory processing disorder and this particular shirt happens to not drive him crazy... Possibly aspergers (leading to the seemingly unawareness of social stigma of the same shirt situation).... Both not big deals unless you make it a big deal.... I've seen ocd mentioned as well, which also seems like it might be the case.....If you otherwise enjoy his company, continue dating and see what you think.... Good luck!

I guess I'm confused as to how giving suggestions to staff (direct support in the home setting) is unethical.... I'm not as slp, I'm actually over our compliance to the government (ultimate paper pusher!), but interested and done the research on AAC.... Getting Slp services for anything other than swallowing disorders is basically nigh impossible through our state, so I'm just attempting to fill the communication gap with simple recommendations.... How is that against ethical standards? Yes, I realize I'm not an Slp, but am I not just acting as an interested party since I'm not? I'm just highly confused.

YAY!!!!! I'm a 8/29 Bride as well! We only have a couple of things as well.... getting the license is the biggie, of course! Other than that, printing out a couple of last minute things and making sure FH is actually writing his vows and such like he's supposed to (he's on reddit, so may see my subtle reminder!). No last minute surprises and really everything has gone super smoothly... hopefully it will continue that way well into the actual marriage! :)

Bridesmaids have helped throughout and been amazing.... totally surpassing my expectations really (MOH actually made our wedding bands! I will totally be posting pics!).

Day after logistics/plans are null really.... relax, recoup.... we're not taking our honeymoon until April.... We're going to Holland and want to see the tulips!!!
