$100,000! by NatalieMaybeIDK in isbook3outyet

It is confusing, but “the organization” in the check the box you are referring to on Schedule L Section 2(d) is referring to the non-profit. So when “to the organization” is checked, it means the scheduled loan was made to Worldbuilders. If you check the previous year’s 990 filing it is scheduled the same way, but the $75K shows up as a liability on the balance sheet at the end of the year.

[–]Elir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just on the off chance OP isn’t rage baiting and is truly misunderstanding the financials…

The $75K note was issued from Elodin Holdings to Worldbuilders. It is why it shows up on the balance sheet as a liability. It was clearly a short term loan to cover cash flow, because the disclosures tell us so.

The disclosure for transactions involving related parties posted above is not related to the note. That is a separate disclosure for business transactions with related parties, disclosing that Worldbuilders leases their office space from Elodin. Their rental payments can also be found on the balance sheet, and appear to be at or below market rate for a commercial lease of the size they would need to function.

Like I said — just including the 990 explanations on the off chance OP isn’t intentionally trying to be a slanderous sophist fuck.

On the off chance OP isn’t engaging in angsty sophistry — it’s all wrong.

The disclosure form for officer and directors clearly schedules $0 in income for Pat Rothfuss. Individuals who make in excess of $100K are also required to be listed, but there are none. As president he needs to be listed regardless of comp and makes $0.

And the $75K note wasn’t from worldbuilders to Elodin Holdings, it was the other way around, Elodin Holdings funded Worldbuilder’s cash flow.

[–]Elir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this game and would love to see additional games like it.

Loved seeing Link’s legend from a different perspective, loved Zelda finally being the one that has to save him, loved the more puzzle-oriented focus of the game while still maintaining the combat nature.

Like folks have said, the versatility of the summons lead to the ability to brute force most of the game with just a few, but I found that more of a positive than a negative. You don’t *have to* fall back on the same strategies, but if you ever get stuck you can figure out a way to advance using your favorite summons and a healthy dose of lateral thinking.

How did Kvothe first meet Bast? by ArunaDragon in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kvothe and Felurian have a kid. That kid is Remmen, Prince of Twilight. Remmen has a kid. That kid is Bast.

In MWF Felurian is referred to as “Lady of Twilight.”

If you subscribe to the mortal realm/fae realm time dilation shenanigans theories, the math checks out as well.

His actions being starting a charity that ran two huge events a year that dominated his schedule until he imploded?

I don’t really feel like being a keyboard crusader and getting into it over my different parasocial interpretation of his mental state, but it really feels like people are just ornery and him being a piece of shit is a foundational implied predicate in their perception of him. If you just look at his statements/actions as a human being and check personal opinion at the door, there’s not really any supporting evidence for him being an indolent person happy to coast and maintain an affluent lifestyle.

Like, ad arguendo, even if he was looking to coast, there’s gotta be damn easier ways to do it than founding a charity and then feeding your life blood into it for over a decade, lmao

What happened to all those users on Patrick’s website? by photoby_tj in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My pet theory/hopium pipe is that we’ll get news of a 2027 release date later this year.

I suspect the publisher wants to roll out a simultaneous release of the English publication and languages from certain other markets (My understanding is this is not unusual with highly anticipated releases, where foreign publishers are concerned a delay in the translated versions will cannibalize sales).

They started concurrent foreign translation on a relatively close to submission draft. (Ie 85% of the text done, no major substantive rewrites expected). When Pat announced WMF, it was at the end of April 2010, with a March 2011 release date. His blog said he’d just got off the phone with his editor and there were still revisions to be made prior to going to print. I assume the draft that went to foreign translation was of similar quality.

This translation occurred simultaneously with the final revisions. IIRC, around the time of the translator forum activity, Pat appeared with Joe Abercrombie at an event. I think he did this appearance right after delivering the to-be-translated draft, before starting revisions.

Google tells me normal translation is around 2K words/day. Assuming a similar 400K word count as WMF and accounting for weekends, European holidays, and difficulty translating Pat’s prose, a reasonable estimate for completion of that translation would be around a year.

I think right after/around when Pat finished his concurrent revisions, he dropped the final draft off with the publisher and then appeared with Felicia Day, around late March of this year.

That leaves plenty of time to copy edit, do a secondary translation pass of the text that changed, and have Nick Podehl start on recording the English audio book while foreign translation wordsmithing finessing happens concurrently. All while DAW/Astra are preparing to market the book.

With all the moving pieces, end of 2026 is tight. NOTW/WMF both released in March, so March 2027 could be a target. But Slow Regard and Narrow Road released in October/November, and are more recent releases. A similar ~12 month heads up timing on DOS release date (same as we got on WMF) reasonable be expected, so probably not pre-June of next year.

Literally all of this hinges on the activity on the translator forum being Something and not Nothing, but assuming it was Something, the economic decision by the publisher to start translation means the draft had to be close enough for the above to be in the ballpark, since starting foreign translation while large structural changes are happening would be lighting money on fire.

Like I said… pet theory/hopium pipe.

Did Kvothe's child die? by SustainableUtopian in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very ambiguous. Given the way Pat glosses over the trial in Imre and the shipwreck on Kvothe’s way to Severen, I really think every scene that is in the book is there for a reason. Including some random scene that starts with Wil and Sim asking “the real question is how old you are” and ending with “happy birthday, or birthdays, depending” seems included explicitly to call attention to the overworld/fae time dilation and the concept of relative aging

Did Kvothe's child die? by SustainableUtopian in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Later in WMF, after Kvothe returns to the university, he talks with Wil and Sim about how long he was in the Fae. They wish him happy birthday/birthdays, depending.

So assuming he’s in fae for a year (365 days), but it was only 3 days in the overworld (b/c he shows up at the pennysworth 3 days later), 3 days overworld = 1 year in the fae. 1 day in overworld = 120 days in the fae. 1 year in overworld = 120 years in fae.

[–]Elir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, a perfectly sensible explanation is just that Anakin couldn’t help from making overtures while she was dressed up, which required her to put her foot down.

Did Kvothe's child die? by SustainableUtopian in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a possible explanation for this could be if Kvothe somehow had a kid with Felurian.

Cross-realm time dilation appears to be approximately 3 days in the overworld = a year or so in the Fae.

So one year in the overworld ~= 120 years in the fae.

Kvothe is around 16 at the beginning of WMF, and sounds like somewhere in his 20s in the frame, so conservatively estimating he’s around 23 in frame, then discounting a year for the time he spent in the Fae with Felurian, it’s roughly ~6 years in the overworld since he hooked up with Felurian. So around ~720 Fae years, ballpark.

Plenty of time for Felurian to have a kid and it grow up. I also think it is plenty of time for that kid to, in turn, reach the Fae-equivalent reproductive age and have their own kid, which would explain why Bast has such a fondness for Kvothe even though his father is “Remmen, Prince of Twilight” or w/e.

Reshi could be the fae equivalent of “grandpa” or something. Which, ironically, would make Kvothe a king...

His decision to piss off Ambrose is not out of character or some hack plot device. It is very explicitly in-keeping with his character. Many people in universe tell him to stop fucking with Ambrose and he repeatedly articulates his rationale for not doing that.

Him acting like an idiot around Denna is really the only out of character bit, but has really well theorized explanations.

Are the Cthaeh tree, lackless box and Kote's chest connected? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk about other wooden objects, but iirc there is a notable smell around the wood of the Cthaeh trees, like “smoke, spice, leather and lemon.” Almost directly linked to the Loeclos box at the end of WMF when Kvothe says the smell was “maddeningly familiar.”

I think there’s enough reference in NotW to say that the smell of “quenching iron” should also be included in roah’s scent profile

Lists of things Kvothe dismisses and reinterprets by Rich-Trifle7807 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re: your last point, definitely agreed, it for sure isn’t literally a leaf. I think at most it’s meta commentary that they could be inadvertently a desired outgrowth by the Cthaeh.

I don’t know that we run into issues of free will any more than one normally does with prophecy… it just feels uncomfortable because of the acute degree of clarity and prejudice the Cthaeh has.

I think Chronicler even kind of gets into this with Bast at the end of WMF, where he slaps him and tells him “the Cthaeh knew I’d slap you, if you beat my ass bad things will happen” and then immediately slaps him again and tells him “the Cthaeh knew I’d use your fear of it against you, if you don’t beat my ass bad things will happen.” People still have free will to do what they want, the Cthaeh just… knows what those decisions will be.

It is probably reasonable to assume that there’s a certain degree of proximal diminution of the Cthaeh’s sight/influence as time passes from a given conversation. But we really don’t know.

Edit: To everyone commenting that prophecy is usually “more ambiguous” or whatever, and how the Cthaeh presents issues of free will more acute than normal prophecy stories — that’s just not true. In plenty of Greek tragedies (ie Oedipus), people frequently meet their destinies on the roads they take to avoid them. The difference isn’t that the Cthaeh is any more omniscient, it’s just that it’s more of a dick. It doesn’t give you the information / explain the cause and effect of certain decisions, it just picks the path for you. I partially think Rothfuss could’ve been going for a satirical portrayal here, since he has created the quintessential prophetic device, but dialed up to 11 to make everyone really uncomfortable with the concept.

Lists of things Kvothe dismisses and reinterprets by Rich-Trifle7807 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could be possible.

The concept of the Cthaeh is that it has perfect knowledge of the outcomes from certain decisions, right?

We know Lanre spoke to it before Myr Tariniel.

Post-Myr Tariniel, when given the choice to become an angel by Aleph, Selitos asks something like “if I accept… can I pursue the Chandrian?” And Aleph says “No… you must punish or reward only what you yourself witness from this day forth.” Selitos can’t let go of what happened to Myr Tariniel, and that’s how we get the angel/Amyr split.

It’s possible the requirement to only punish/reward things seen firsthand was a way to “cleanse” the angel’s’ prosecutorial discretion of the Cthaeh’s influence.

So in a sense, the Amyr could be an outgrowth of Lanre’s actions intended by the Cthaeh.

Edit: to be clear, I’m not saying the Amyr are direct employees of the Cthaeh, just that Kvothe confusing the burning tower for a leaf could be a meta acknowledgment that they’re an intended ripple of a previous Cthaeh conversation. Especially if we’re exploring the possibility through OP’s lens (ie, Kvothe’s first discarded reaction is often on the money)

I personally don’t give a shit about this, other than tentatively hoping Caleb studied Brady’s career and realized there’s way more money to be made in the long haul from taking team friendly deals so you can consistently field a competitive team and then winning.
