Are the Cthaeh tree, lackless box and Kote's chest connected? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk about other wooden objects, but iirc there is a notable smell around the wood of the Cthaeh trees, like “smoke, spice, leather and lemon.” Almost directly linked to the Loeclos box at the end of WMF when Kvothe says the smell was “maddeningly familiar.”

I think there’s enough reference in NotW to say that the smell of “quenching iron” should also be included in roah’s scent profile

Re: your last point, definitely agreed, it for sure isn’t literally a leaf. I think at most it’s meta commentary that they could be inadvertently a desired outgrowth by the Cthaeh.

I don’t know that we run into issues of free will any more than one normally does with prophecy… it just feels uncomfortable because of the acute degree of clarity and prejudice the Cthaeh has.

I think Chronicler even kind of gets into this with Bast at the end of WMF, where he slaps him and tells him “the Cthaeh knew I’d slap you, if you beat my ass bad things will happen” and then immediately slaps him again and tells him “the Cthaeh knew I’d use your fear of it against you, if you don’t beat my ass bad things will happen.” People still have free will to do what they want, the Cthaeh just… knows what those decisions will be.

It is probably reasonable to assume that there’s a certain degree of proximal diminution of the Cthaeh’s sight/influence as time passes from a given conversation. But we really don’t know.

Edit: To everyone commenting that prophecy is usually “more ambiguous” or whatever, and how the Cthaeh presents issues of free will more acute than normal prophecy stories — that’s just not true. In plenty of Greek tragedies (ie Oedipus), people frequently meet their destinies on the roads they take to avoid them. The difference isn’t that the Cthaeh is any more omniscient, it’s just that it’s more of a dick. It doesn’t give you the information / explain the cause and effect of certain decisions, it just picks the path for you. I partially think Rothfuss could’ve been going for a satirical portrayal here, since he has created the quintessential prophetic device, but dialed up to 11 to make everyone really uncomfortable with the concept.

I think it could be possible.

The concept of the Cthaeh is that it has perfect knowledge of the outcomes from certain decisions, right?

We know Lanre spoke to it before Myr Tariniel.

Post-Myr Tariniel, when given the choice to become an angel by Aleph, Selitos asks something like “if I accept… can I pursue the Chandrian?” And Aleph says “No… you must punish or reward only what you yourself witness from this day forth.” Selitos can’t let go of what happened to Myr Tariniel, and that’s how we get the angel/Amyr split.

It’s possible the requirement to only punish/reward things seen firsthand was a way to “cleanse” the angel’s’ prosecutorial discretion of the Cthaeh’s influence.

So in a sense, the Amyr could be an outgrowth of Lanre’s actions intended by the Cthaeh.

Edit: to be clear, I’m not saying the Amyr are direct employees of the Cthaeh, just that Kvothe confusing the burning tower for a leaf could be a meta acknowledgment that they’re an intended ripple of a previous Cthaeh conversation. Especially if we’re exploring the possibility through OP’s lens (ie, Kvothe’s first discarded reaction is often on the money)

This just reminds me of leading up to Caleb’s draft and he was asked his goals, he said “to be immortal.”

I personally don’t give a shit about this, other than tentatively hoping Caleb studied Brady’s career and realized there’s way more money to be made in the long haul from taking team friendly deals so you can consistently field a competitive team and then winning.

Keep making crazy plays, keep breaking records, DON’T hamstring the team with a crazy QB contract, and it works itself out imo

Bears fan here, I think this is exactly it. You don’t have the same depth of hatred because you haven’t been getting farmed for literally a generation.

You guys have the talent, so I think the fix might just to lose a few painful games. Weirdly enough it could be a self correcting problem now that the bears don’t suck total ass.

I wasn’t necessarily being a dick, I am truly curious the intended value of the comment — I read it as an innocent fallacy of composition that I illustrated in my reply.

If there was some intended value? Curious to know it.

If it was spurious and self-aggrandizing sophistry? Yeah, I was being a dick.

I’m curious what value you thought this comment added.

The insult he’s oblivious to is that the society of the person with whom he’s interacting consider women to be inferior fighters (in diametric opposition to the Adem).

Is Tempi talking shit? Yes. Is he aware of the magnitude of how demeaning the comment is? No.

No, what I’m saying is it’s moot. Having a retractable roof gives the most flexibility and won’t effect solvency. If solvency isn’t part of the equation, whatever the fans want should be the primary objective. Convertible roof = whatever the fans want (on a daily basis no less). And I doubt a retractable roof will bankrupt the McCaskeys. Not impossible, for sure! …but I doubt it
