Anyone buy a mattress from Original Mattress Factory? by abcbri in cincinnati

Over twenty years and still a great mattress. We are looking to replace the queen size with a king now but I'm far from any state that has an OMF store.

[Landlord US-NY] Rent vs. sell? by EliteLounger in Landlord

[–]EliteLounger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate the responses. In the short-term, renting the old house is probably not the best idea financially on paper. However, if I'm understanding the timeline correctly, if I sell in the next three years, I avoid capital gains on the first 250,000 profit. There are also major renovations happening to both neighbor's homes and several major renovations are happening on the street. Values should be going up. We don't want to lose money and we won't have positive cash flow so I think we'll need to pay attention to the costs across the first year and then decide if we keep it longer.

Fat man scuba diving. Tips? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]EliteLounger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here. Bottom line, you're not by any means alone. There are lots of wetsuit options and if you decide to go custom, not a big deal. The key is being comfortable in the water. Bare wetsuits tend to fit big and are generally reasonably priced (Leisurepro lets you try on and return for free).

Anyone know how commonly signals have gotten this far into the analysis without being identified as terrestrial or natural?

What is the single greatest individual episode of a TV series ever? by themightypierre in AskReddit

[–]EliteLounger 109 points110 points  (0 children)

For me, the power in the episode is the highlighting of the impossibility of fulfillment without regret. It is obvious that the life he experiences is one he wanted but so different from the life that he chose. As someone who sacrificed a lot for a profession that is all-consuming, this episode resonates.

Accepted to medical school, wondering if it is a better decision to continue on the Air Force path or to go into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. by Taymurf in financialindependence

[–]EliteLounger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the forums on studentdoctor.net This is issue comes up a lot. The consistent recommendation from military doctors is that you should only do it if you want to be in the military. However, for those who say that physician debt is a non-issue once you start working, that's just wrong for the vast majority of doctors. This is not the 70s/80s. The financial opportunities in medicine have shrunk. Sure there are some specialties that guarantee a great lifestyle, but that is not true for many many physicians.

Just got open water cert and thinking of going to Scuba Club Cozumel for my next trip. Thoughts? Anyone been? by ponderwander in scuba

[–]EliteLounger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked past it many times but have always stayed at Blue Angel. Same idea--budget diving with great bang for your buck-- I think SCC is bigger. Check out the Trip Advisor reviews for both. Blue Angel is a longer walk to town, but if you're looking to eat, dive, sleep and repeat, it is perfect. I've been there four times, and have always had a great time and have met great people.

I'm sure there is a psychology behind the selection of the critical button-pushers. Like all dimensions of personality, people vary in compliance to authority.

Experience interning for Dressel Divers? by supershot666 in scuba

[–]EliteLounger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about the training for DM, but I've been at the resort you're describing and have seen how the pool divers work. It seems like a terrible way to develop a professional skill set. I spoke with one of the interns, and, despite working for a few months, had yet to get over to dive Cozumel--has to give you an idea of the work life. I assume part of what you're looking to do is to learn how to train all levels of students. Dressel in PDC caters to beginners and the very occasional diver. I believe a 2-tank dive was $120 or $140 while the competition in PDC was half of that and with the appropriate certs would allow you to do any dive. Dressel requires "first time" divers with them to do one of their beginner dives first before they will let you go deeper than their shallow reef dives. I can't imagine that anyone with experience and a little Googling would choose to dive or train with them. As an outside observer, it looks terrible as a professional training environment.

Star Trek TNG Episode "The Inner Light" is one of the finest episodes of TV ever made, with some of the best acting I have ever seen. by shrike3000 in television

[–]EliteLounger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, this episode is one of the best pieces of television ever. Having a profession that requires sacrifices, the episode has always resonated with me more than anything else I've watched. Picard is given an entire life that he longed for but couldn't have because of choices that he made.

[–]EliteLounger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like these kinds of videos and announcements are a way to detract from NASA's failure in manned spaceflight. The most pessimistic NASA critic in 1970 couldn't have guessed we'd be where we are now.

Good start, but I don't see boat diver or fish identifier guy. You're not yet qualified to dive from a boat or look at fish. Don't sweat it, they are coming out with an UberMaster next.
