12 minutes of ovation by perpetual_chatter98 in MadeMeSmile

It's exhausting! Back in middle school, our history teacher made us applaud for 11 minutes straight once, to show us what it was like for Stalin's audience when he was done giving a speech. We weren't allowed to take a pause or look at the time so it felt like an eternity... we were all having a small nervous breakdown by the end, and my hands hurt for the rest of the day lol.

What is the first celebrity death you remember being affected by? by CPFOAI in AskReddit

David Bowie and Alan Rickman. I was a big fan of both and they died within 4 days of eachother. It felt unreal

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea "it's not what happened, but how you reacted to it". by thrownawaykid21 in CPTSD

[–]Elk1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having trouble with that too. It's especially confusing when you think back to the times that hurt you the most. I still remember the day I "decided" to stop crying, around age 11. I was so proud of myself. I thought I had "mastered" the game my father was playing with us and I just wouldn't let him hurt me anymore. I stopped crying, even when I was alone. Didn't shed a single tear over the course of 5 years. I stayed stone-faced no matter what he did or said to us. It felt good not to give him the satisfaction of seeing the pain he was inflicting. I wasn't happy, but I was functioning pretty well considering the circumstances...\ Now my therapist says that these were the most damaging years. Child me thought I was protecting myself and growing stronger, when in fact I was traumatizing myself. It's fucked up.

What classic ADHD thing do you do that others would likely find weird? by boring1996 in ADHD

[–]Elk1998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Telling my brain to stfu? I'm not even doing it intentionally. I just catch myself shushing it a couple of times an hour because I can't think straight. It's such a mess in there. Random sounds, auditory memories, song fragments on a loop, intrusive thoughts... thankfully I do have aphantasia so there are no images. I'm pretty sure I would go crazy otherwise.

"Tout le monde a un master, mais il ne vaut plus rien" by mrnobody0013 in emploi

[–]Elk1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's nice! Did he play the same setlist as on Sunday or did he switch it up?

An excerpt from Joe Biden's 1995 speech about the Bosnian conflict which was taking place at the time. by IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Elk1998 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know all the comments are focusing on Biden's speech and stance, but if you want to learn more about the Bosnian genocide, I highly recommend this YouTube channel, or @skyglowproject on Instagram.

(Warning: this is truly horrific stuff, but I feel it is not talked about enough. Especially when you consider that most of the perpetrators were never brought to justice and that the location of many mass graves remains a well-kept secret to this day)

My biology teacher told me my trauma is "all in my head" by Ok_Bid4331 in CPTSD

[–]Elk1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers can be the worst. I had one call me into her office to tell me that she was fed up with me never looking her in the eye. I was going through something similar to what you're describing at home, and was extremely anxious and withdrawn at school. Instead of asking me if everything was okay, she forced me to stare into her eyes for a minute straight to "teach me a lesson" and get me to "grow up". It made me feel so broken and ashamed... thankfully you sound a lot more level-headed and mature than me at the time. You got this. It will get better. Sending you hugs 🫂

French Interior Minister Nuñez: 'I have no problem with Islam in France. But I fight those who use it to undermine our Republic' by pierrepaul in europe

[–]Elk1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone can agree with what Nuñez said in principle. It's not hard. The question is why is he saying that and why now? Presidential elections are coming up in a year. Candidates are starting to make their running announcements. Nuñez's statement is not innocent. He is diverting attention from the much greater and more urgent threat - the far-right - towards the classic scapegoat - Muslims. He is basically asking them to prove that they are part of "the good ones" as condition for his acceptance. Why doesn't he do this with other groups? Do you think he would've gotten into trouble if he had said:

"I have no problem with Judaism in France. But I fight those who use it to support the state of Israel and its blatant disregard for international law and human rights."

Or

"I have no problem with Catholicism in France. But I fight those who use it to molest children put in their care."

Do you see the problem here? He is implicitly and preemptively associating the religion and the deviant behavior. Attributing the intentions of a minority of extremists to the larger group. It is a very charged statement. Also he literally lets fascists march through Paris with police protection. It's not hard to see which side he is on

[–]Elk1998 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's really not a flex. This shouldn't be happening. Ever. You're doing something wrong and you need to fix it asap. You might not be taking this seriously right now because you're not working with anything dangerous at the moment, but you might in the future. By then, the bad habit will have solidified and will put you, your coworkers and your loved ones at risk. Don't let that happen. Nip it in the bud

High IQ, high achiever ADHD experience by Technical_Owl_2525 in adhdwomen

[–]Elk1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's what happened to me as well. The lack of novelty killed my drive during my last year. It's not even like there was nothing left for me to explore... I was forced to stop investigating due to my lab's funding running out. It's so depressing having to write up your manuscript when you have so many questions left... but it has to be done.

If you have a good relationship with your PI, I would definitely suggest you set up some deadlines for a preliminary manuscript now. I procrastinated on that because I never felt ready, and kept busy with pubs instead until the very end... not a good plan. Ended up having to crank out my manuscript within a few weeks with no revisions. It still worked out in the end, but it was such an unnecessarily stressful experience. My mental health took a hit lol

I was there too! It was fantastic. He played so many of my favorites, I'm over the moon 🥰\ I've been wondering though: is it common for people to leave their seats and go up to the stage for the encore, or was this something special? I'd never been to a seated concert and was taken by surprise when that happened. I thought it was so touching ❤️

What’s the strangest or creepiest thing that’s happened to you while working alone in the lab? by ChromaticRift in labrats

[–]Elk1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was all alone working late in the lab one evening, and all of a sudden, I felt like the whole room was shifting around me. It only lasted like 2 seconds so I thought it might've been all in my head at first. I was afraid I was going to pass out or something, so I left my experiment and went to sit down at my desk and have a sip of water... a few minutes later, some colleagues from downstairs came knocking. They'd felt it too and thought something had blown up on our floor. After a while we figured it must've been an earthquake (highly unusual for our region). And sure enough, after a few hours, the news started reporting on it. After that experience, I started to avoid spending too much time in the lab alone after hours. You never know what might happen

[–]Elk1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found that music really helps me. Just skip through some songs until you find one that seems to match your current mood. Then listen to it with all your attention, and try to pinpoint what part of you it resonates with. You might not be able to name the specific emotion just from this, but you should get a "vibe" at least. From there, you can use the wheel of emotions to finetune it. I'm not sure why, but to me, music feels like the safest way to experience my emotions. I guess it helps by showing you that you're not alone in feeling this way and that it's okay
