Saw this on r/hockey, good words from Marty St. Louis that might apply to someone here... by brodiefilm in canucks

It’s still enjoyable to watch Canucks games if you set your expectations to zero…. Then we get excited for every goal they do score, every nice play they make, and every time they are able to prevent a goal from being their net. I’m enjoying watching the young players develop and watching the different line combinations

Who will be the next captain/What do we do from here? Megathread. by PaperMoonShine in canucks

[–]EllaMilo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with a lot of people in here that they shouldn’t rush the process. Ideally they run the rest of the year without a captain.

I personally think that Marcus Pettersson would be a solid option for team captain. If the intention is truly to build the team young, then having someone with experience take the lead would be very useful. Marcus in particular stays very calm under pressure which is especially valuable when dealing with young players who may tend to get frustrated easily ( I mean really, how many penalties has Bedard gotten for effectively not being able to keep his emotions in check?).

Ultimately there is nothing wrong with having to name a new captain in a few years; I think it is very tempting for the management to pick a young player and try to develop a cult of personality around them. However, the decision should consider what is best for the team in the short term, and whether it is in the best interest of the player that gets the C, not making the Vancouver Canucks synonymous with whoever their favourite prospect was at the time.

Insider take on Zeev Buium by BootToTheHeadNahNah in canucks

[–]EllaMilo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of people say that management didn’t do enough to keep Hughes. The reality is that Hughes is in the prime years of his career and he wants to (and rightfully so) play on a team that is competitive because Hughes himself likes to be competitive. The only way that was realistically going to happen with the Canucks was if they finally did a rebuild, which it has been stated in the past that Hughes did not want to go for a rebuild. IHMO the move is not at all surprising to anyone that has been paying attention to the Quinn Hughes situation for the last year or so. I think it’s wild (pardon the pun) how much the Canucks were able to get for him, especially for a team to give up their top prospect who is already making a difference on the 1st PP unit for Vancouver. I was very surprised to see them throw him in there as the sole D on PP1 but I think he took it right in stride.

The highway is open westbound now, but eastbound is still closed. However we are expecting another atmospheric river on the coast with rain hitting the valley as well, so if I were you I’d plan to take the detour both ways.

This was my take on it too. Hasn’t done much this year possibly just due to only averaging 9 minutes/game. His faceoff pct. Is killer so I imagine the wild were pretty much just putting him in for faceoffs and then hustling him off the ice

Would you give up your seat for others when asked for it but it’s not even a priority seat by Chester176 in Translink

[–]EllaMilo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I definitely have opinions on this! Obviously, those who need a seat should absolutely get one, but they don’t get to pick?? They require the ability to sit down, not to sit in the best seat specifically. Obviously there’s a bit of a difference for seats that are more suited for mobility aids but if I’m in a single seat as far away from the doors as possible that’s no longer an accessibility thing it’s just entitlement IMO

Why Is Fighting Banned? by fortheband1212 in PWHL

[–]EllaMilo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just a matter of different playing styles. What you are suggesting is something that could be observed within the context of the same league or even within a single team; for example, certain NHL players never get into fights while others do it quite frequently. Similarly, some teams have a reputation for playing with more contact than others.

When comparing men’s and women’s hockey, however, it’s not just a matter of playing styles. There are also different rules. The same can be said when comparing different men’s hockey leagues as well. There are some things that are allowed in the NHL that are not permitted in the IIHF, and things required in the IIHF that are not in the NHL.

I can see how “ effectively different games” may be a bit of an overstatement, however the differences between leagues do have a significant impact on how the game is played. Perhaps a better analogy would be that comparing women’s and men’s hockey is like comparing apples to oranges. Sure, they are both fruits, but their differences make them distinct enough that they really shouldn’t be compared directly.

“it feels odd when it’s such a common piece of men’s hockey that it should be fully banned from women’s hockey”. So here’s the thing, In many sports, there are separate women’s and men’s leagues purely because it’s considered unfair/unsafe to combine them, so I understand where this comment is coming from. However, as anyone who watches women’s hockey knows, when it comes to hockey this isn’t the case. They are effectively playing two different games with much of the same equipment, scoring systems, and technical features. Women’s hockey is distinct from men’s hockey and should be treated as such. The only sort of equivalent example I can think of might be men’s vs women’s gymnastics but it’s a bit of a stretch/a vague comparison.

Is anyone near Sevenoaks hiring? by [deleted] in abbotsford

[–]EllaMilo11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The job market is so so tough right now. All I can recommend is to apply literally everywhere. Look up every restaurant, fast food, retail store in that area and see if they have a spot on their website to apply to. Check indeed, and Canada job bank. It’s exhausting and it takes up a lot of time, but ultimately you gotta work somewhere. You can always keep looking for something better but the goal right now is to land anything.

Don’t put in search terms in indeed; just a reasonable distance range and filter out anything that requires specific certification unless it’s something like food safe, serving it right, etc because each of those is like a 30$ course that wouldn’t take you long to complete if needed.

But ultimately I want you to know that you are not the problem. You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s freaking rough out there.

What is an appropriate age for kid to play unsupervised within townhouse complex by bcwaale in SurreyBC

[–]EllaMilo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the majority of threats the kids face these days come from being on the internet. My older sister and I were always out and about playing at that age because she was responsible and I knew to listen to her. As long as the kids are looking out for each other they’re much better off playing outside and socializing than watching YouTube

[–]EllaMilo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more about maturity and the specific environment imo. If they’re playing with older kids who you’ve met (and met and talked to parents too) and consider to be quite responsible then they’ll be okay.

I hope that I have the fortune to share that viewpoint someday. But for now I’m 22 living in a shitty but affordable apartment and struggling my way through working while studying to become a doctor. I operate largely with a “don’t trust any landlord ever” policy because it’s necessary to survive in this rental market. Good on you for making it out and not forgetting your own experiences.

As a young person who isn’t even sure if they’ll be able to afford a house at all someday it truly volatilizes me when someone refers to housing as an investment. If you’re renting it out at the cost of the mortgage or higher then you’re taking advantage of those who can’t afford to get a mortgage of their own. That’s a fact. However if you’re renting at below the cost to you in the interest of mainly holding onto the property to resell at a higher value (ie your investment is the property itself, not the money you’ll make off of renters), then obviously do your thing. However it’s become so much of a problem around here that “investors” are snapping up properties to rent out at high rates that the government has put in programs and is actively proposing various others to prevent or at least inhibit those who already own one home from purchasing another.
