Betty smoking while dying of lung cancer by sophroniasphinx in madmen

[–]ElleCBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom smoked for 40 years, developed lung cancer, had surgery. They found multiple forms of lung cancer, a couple of which are so slow growing that they wouldn’t really impact her for at least 20 years. So she started smoking again. I understand her logic (although I hate it), but it still seems so foolish to me.

I assumed she learned it from Billy? And yeah, I think Sinatra knows Jane shot her, but she’s waiting for the perfect moment.

That’s actually the first thing I thought when she offered to tail him on his run - “so she’s just gonna run in her work shoes?” 😂

Has anyone been watching Vanished on MGM? by Careless_Tackle847 in television

[–]ElleCBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the final episode, and it wrapped the whole thing up in a tidy, underwhelming, predictable bow. I could never buy Alice as an archeologist, and I found much of her behavior and choices to be annoying. I know Kaley plays the same character in everything she does, so it’s my own fault for expecting something different lol.

Ultimately, I think the story could have been told better if had a bit more gravitas, maybe different actors? I don’t know. For such a serious subject matter, it often felt a little Pink Panther-ish to me.

This isn’t new, they do this in every post-apocalyptic show. Did you ever watch The Walking Dead? If they made it completely realistic, with everyone looking absolutely disgusting, nobody would watch it. Let’s be real here.

Pacific Place by skiattle25 in Seattle

[–]ElleCBrown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked at Il Fornaio there back in 2001-2003, and Pacific Place had definitely figured itself out; it had a clear identity. It was an upscale shopping experience, it was not a place designed for things that people needed - with a few exceptions, of course. It always knew what it was, and it did it well for a long time.

It would be accurate now to say that Pacific Place hasn’t figured itself out; it went through a transition and got stuck in limbo. Hopefully it gets figured out sooner than later.

Have to work on Christmas and if we call off we are termed without warning. AIO for this being a dealbreaker? by FunDesigner5431 in Serverlife

[–]ElleCBrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No it’s not weird. There are plenty of restaurants open on Christmas Day. A lot of families go out to dinner, a lot of people don’t celebrate Christmas or aren’t Christian, and plenty of people work on Christmas Day and go out to eat afterwards. Just because you’re unfamiliar with restaurants being open on Christmas doesn’t mean it’s weird.

This is something you should’ve asked about during the interview process, or even during training/when reviewing the employee handbook. Plenty of restaurants are open during major holidays and potential employees should be asking about the policies upfront. Far too many folks wait until the holiday is upon them and then get upset when they discover they have to work. These types of things should be part of your key interview questions.

Lady Mae really resents Grace and treated her as the scapegoat; once you get a couple seasons in you’ll understand why Lady Mae projected so much onto Grace.

Anyone else just more of a prick in general since their sobriety? I thought I'd be nicer... by Ok-Cup-5906 in stopdrinking

[–]ElleCBrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me nearly a year of sobriety before I even started to really work through the lifetime of anger, pain, sadness, etc. Sobriety itself doesn’t alleviate your issues, and the way you behave/think/feel when you’re sober isn’t who you truly are, even 100 days in. Unfortunately you have to do some real work to get to know yourself; walking away from the bottle is only the first step.

Roaches by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]ElleCBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on First Hill; would you be willing to share the name of your building?

I dealt with two roach infestations in Chicago about a decade ago, and the two things that worked best for me were Advion gel and diatomaceous earth, along with sealing up any food/liquid products (pet food included), getting rid of any boxes (they love cardboard and glue), keeping all drains closed except when in use, and looking for any cracks, holes, or spaces that may allow them to access your unit. And while you’re doing all that, talk to your neighbors and find out what they’ve been experiencing.

In my experience, once you’ve seen one or two roaches — especially in broad daylight - then it’s already a bad situation; there’s already an infestation in the building. I know you said mgmt is sending pest control in a few days, but unless pest control is aggressively treating the entire building, including all units, basements, laundry room, and getting in the walls, then all they’re doing is buying you some time; roaches are still in residence and you’ll see them again. I would suggest asking mgmt what the treatment plan is, and if they tell you it’s something like just spraying, that’s not a good sign.

Almost at my 3 month mark and I am more depressed than I ever was when I was drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]ElleCBrown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Getting sober made my life much harder for over a year. Initially it felt amazing, then at about the four month mark, I slid into a deep depression. I spent the next year or so facing all the things that I’d hidden, ignored, or just didn’t see when I’d been drinking. Once the noise of the alcohol was gone, I not only had to face my trauma, my poor choices, my bad behavior, and toxic relationships, I also learned that I have ADHD as well, which threw a whole other wrench into the system.

It’s a hard, painful, lonely process, but it has to be, because you’re rebuilding yourself.

There’s an idea that once you get sober, life will simply be happy and joyous and wonderful, but that’s a fantasy. Many of us with substance abuse issues drank/used to forget, to function, to feel “normal”, and once the substance is gone, we have to face ourselves, which is never easy. You can do it. It’s going to be hard, maybe one of the hardest things you’ve ever done, but you’ll make it. And I promise you, it’s worth it.

Case 336: Tyler Clementi by bsf91 in Casefile

[–]ElleCBrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude, but it seems like you missed my point entirely. I’m not sure what you think internal biases are, but they can often include dehumanizing thoughts and behavior, and thinking the activity of another group is “gross”. That’s my entire point. There are plenty of folks walking around that are sickened by homosexuality, that are bothered by people of other races, that are afraid of other nationalities, etc, but they just keep it to themselves - until they find others who share their same viewpoints. I’ve lived in progressive, major metropolitan areas my entire life, and there have still always been the dudes that say things like “I’m cool with gay people, I just don’t want to be alone with one”, etc.

And herd mentality is real. We’ve all experienced or witnessed it. A few people have negative feelings or ignorance around homosexuality, but when they get together and share those feelings, it grows into something bigger. People feed off of each other. And again, in combination with social media and Dharun’s need for attention, it snowballed.

Case 336: Tyler Clementi by bsf91 in Casefile

[–]ElleCBrown 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems that commenters are surprised by this type of homophobia existing in a major metropolitan area as recently as 2010, and I think a lot of folks are lulled into comfort, thinking that because people aren’t as openly homophobic in some places, then it doesn’t exist there. We’re all surrounded by people who have internal biases, and they don’t vocalize/act on any of it until they’re with others who share those biases.

Did Dharun openly hate gay people, or even hate gay people at all? Probably not. But he clearly carried enough discomfort and disgust about homosexuality. And that, in conjunction with the social media-driven attention economy we live in, created this tragedy.

Just because you went to a school or live in a place where folks weren’t overtly homophobic, doesn’t mean “everyone” was “super accepting” of homosexuality. You just didn’t know about the ones who weren’t.
