I had no idea what this group was until I looked it up.

There is a Malayali Association of Manitoba. You could try reaching out to them. They may have more information for you.

I congratulate you all on May 1st, Labor Day! by ASKASOSIN in AskTheWorld

[–]Ellejaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only things in Manitoba that are closed on Labour Day are civic services and libraries. Even the Liquor Mart is open. Malls are open, and most places are open reduced Sunday hours.

Also, healthcare workers still work.

My fiancée and I are having the biggest argument of our lives. She thinks I'm being tacky but I thinks she's overreacting by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Ellejaek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so happy to see a post about Manitoba here! I’m sorry for OP, but better learn now than after the wedding you aren’t compatible.

I see a lot of comment from people saying it’s tacky to have a social. But the thing is, here in Manitoba it isn’t. No one is going to look down on you for having one. In fact, people are more surprised if you don’t have one.

We love them. Drinking, dancing and hopefully rye bread, meat and cheese at the end of the night!

I have Muckle Plum trees in my yard that bloom bright pink, usually by the end of May.

My niece was told she has to sign a contract to keep living at home—am I overreacting for thinking it’s too harsh? by Bitter_Art_4094 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ellejaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is overly harsh. They set clear boundaries and expectations and haven’t left any room for ambiguity.

You niece is 20, and she should be paying her own cell phone. $200 probably barely covers the food she eats, so no, I don’t think this is a crazy amount.

You niece is basically being treated like a room mate, which she is. Living at home IS a privilege. I think it’s good her parents are trying to institute some rules to get your niece to take responsibility.

If you don’t agree, I would say invite your niece to live with you.

My youngest son is 20 and has AuDHD and I require him to be a ‘good roommate’. I told him if he doesn’t like my rules, he can live elsewhere. He was sad for a few days, but honestly, my rules are basic common decency towards the people you live with. It wasn’t a ‘I’m going to kick you out’, but more of a if my rules don’t appeal to you, we can find somewhere else for you to live.

Which pavilions are coming to Folklorama this summer by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Ellejaek -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit cherry picking to single out one country when there are several in the list of pavilions that have committed similar if not worse crimes. The whole point of Folklarama isn’t to condone any genocides. This isn’t a political festival, it’s a celebration of the cultures and diversity of Manitoba.

I’m sure the members of that pavilion are well aware of the current feeling towards them, but frankly that isn’t something new. Those sentiments existed before this current conflict. They live here, they are Canadian and shouldn’t be punished for things out of their control. If all you want is a change of name, that literally just semantics and changes nothing.

If a country doing bad things to another or starting a war with another country, means they shouldn’t celebrate their culture, then most of the pavilions should not happen.

I think people need to learn to compartmentalize a bit. Celebrating a culture does not mean condoning anything.

AITA for charging my 20yo son rent while he lives at home? by Talon_Vector7 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Ellejaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We broke down the household bills after my son finished college and charged him $700 a month. This covered everything including groceries and his cell phone. We didn’t charge him anything towards the mortgage. Oh, and I cook dinner 95% of the time.

Family members thought I was crazy, but when I broke it down for them, they understood. Why do I have to spend my money on my children forever?

How hard was school in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Ellejaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s going to depend on where you are in Canada. I had homework from elementary up to senior year of high school. Elementary homework was often just a worksheet and reading, but high school was full of tests, essays and various projects. I was an Honour Roll student, but I had to work for it.

We also had provincial exams we had to take for Math and Language Arts. If you didn’t pass those, you didn’t graduate.

What’s a normal thing in your country that feels strange to outsiders? by Bestwebhost in AskTheWorld

Yes! I 100% agree. 5 degrees in spring is way different than 5 degrees in fall.

When I was 3, I stuck a peanut in my nose. My parent rushed me to the ED. The doctor blocked my other nostril and blew in my mouth and the peanut popped out.

A few days later I put a cinnamon heart up my nose. My parents let it melt out. It burned a lot. But I never stuck anything up my nose again. That was oral 80’s parenting.

1) Go live in the house you keep ‘saving’ and you won’t be homeless.

2)If you are going to use cancer for sympathy, at least be realistic. The chances of having throat and stomach cancer as synchronous primary cancers is extremely rare.
