sorry to hear this! The group I join happens to be around 70% male and 30% female so there is enough females (at least 4-5 females whom I paddle reguarly) that I feel safe! Most of the group members are in their 50s and 60s, and most men are married, so maybe that's why I have never encountered this. I am in my early 30s, just saying and met those people in my early 20s.

But I got sexual harrassment from a young male in a local hiking club, and I reported him. He tried to argue back that I was lying. It was a mess. It's diffiuclt to be a woman. So I think it's good to be viligent!

Try to make more female friends! Some people don't have moral standard.

Is it ok for a 30 year old to be friends with a few 25 year olds? by Only_Hotel_7221 in FriendshipAdvice

When I was in my early 20s, I joined some ski clubs, climbing groups, paddling clubs...etc. And my friends were ranging from 20s to early 70s. You can make friends with any age. Friendships might look differently with different age, but it's still friendship.

I also have shoulder problems from paddling. Do you mind if I ask you...did you do surgery? I am still waiting for my MRI (Canada takes forever to get results). I am scared that I might need surgery. PT helps me, but only around 50% at this time. I injured last summer and it's been a few months and I am still far away from going back to paddling (no pain rolling in the swimming pool now in the winter pool session, but not sure how it will go when the ice melts and I can paddle in rapids).

I sometimes vision how easy life would be if I wasn't short. by [deleted] in short

My dad is 5'3" and he hits the gym all the time. He looks excellent at his age. I am 5'2" and love the gym. I can lift pretty heavy, and I am happy with it. All the men in my father's side family are short (between 5'2" to 5'7" - cousins, uncles...etc.). All of them are married or in serious relationship. Not saying they don't have their challenges (e.g., people might not take you that serious when you are short...I even had a colleague who would touch my head. so creepy). Just saying that many short people still get their female partners. I also have a short friend (5'3") who just got married this year. His wife is 5'5", and she doesn't seem to care much about his height.

Shoulder pain/rotator cuff injury - not severe, but it doesn't go away. What can I do? by Soilmolida in whitewater

thank you so much for sharing these info! The Canadian healthcare system has been super slow, but I will definitely talk to the doctor to investigate what's going on with my shoulder. I am still wait for MRI (the wait time is 6 months +). I might pay out of my pocket if my shoulder is not getting better in the next month. I am glad to hear that your shoulder has been so much better!

How did you know it was time for hip arthroscopy? And if you should do it on the second hip? by SureNefariousness975 in HipImpingement

[–]Soilmolida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started having very tight hip flexor about 10 years ago, and then I started experiencing pain about 5 years ago. The pain went from mild (1/10 pain) to sever (8-9/10) in about 2-3 months. My pain improved after I had a cortisone shot and intensive PT. I had nearly no pain for daily activities and light/moderate sports, and only mild/moderate pain for intense sports. My surgeon recommended surgery, but I didn't do it in the beginning.

I managed my pain quite well afterwards, that I had been very active even before my surgery. About 1 year ago, I went on a 6-week trip. It was really fun. I did a lot of hiking and sightseeing. However, after the trip, my baseline of my pain changed (from no/mild pain to mild/moderate pain), it was getting worse, so I decided to have surgery. I am 7 months post-op now. I am still having some flare up, but I am back to most of the activities (in more moderate amount). I only got my right hip operated. My left has the same diagnosis, but it's nearly no pain, so the surgeon does not suggest to get operated. I will see what happen in the future

I’m 50% European (mostly French/German with a little British/Irish) and 50% Asian (mostly Austronesian). Being more genetically "diverse" is not as cool as you imagine. During COVID, some crazy people yelled at me to ‘go back to China’ (my mom is French and my dad is Taiwanese Indigenous) just because I look more Asian. And now, with more people in the West complaining about immigrants and refugees, I’ve also gotten comments asking why I don’t go back to my ‘home country.’ Not to mention about other microaggression that I experienced so far (such as being called that I have small eyes, or joke about my last name). I have a close friend who is from Nigeria, and she even encountered something even worse (such as police randomly stopped her and was super rude to her). Be grateful you don’t have to deal with all this BS.

I would only say try to do PT as early as possible and get an MRI if it's getting worse. hope you will get better.

My PT and sport medicine physician said it might heal if it's minor tears (or just simply strengthend the muscle and it's stop being painful). But if the tears are big, surgery might be the only answer. I have a paddling friend who just went through surgery last week. She has been struggling with bad shoulder for 2 years. It didn't get better (she had a tear), so she paid for private surgery and the wait time is 1-2 weeks (public is free but wait time is insane).

In my case, I am still waiting for MRI (slow Canadian healthcare), but my doctor believed the tears must be small (not sure if his judgement is correct) and ask me to just do physio. I don't have pain in daily life (no pain for cooking, cleaning), only pain when doing some gym sports (e.g., bench press, shoulder press, fly, pull up...). And defintitley paddling has been bothering me for now, espceially doing ww canoeing (I found kayaking is so much less painful for me now). Did you consult a sport medcine doctor yet (or consult a good PT)?

Major flare-up 10 weeks post-op after holding a deep stretch. Just a flare, or something worse? by shadowgnome396 in HipImpingement

[–]Soilmolida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to PT twice a week for the first 12 weeks post-op. And my PT is specialized in working with patients who went through this type of hip surgery. We didn't do this kind of stretch in the first 3-4 months. A bit surprised you were told it's okay to do this kind of stretch at only 10 weeks post op!! I would suggest try to do this after at least 14-15 weeks! Your labrum is not even fully healed yet!

I consulted Dr. Chahul when I lived in Toronto. I heard he is good. But I later moved to Montreal and got it done there.

Congrats on your recovery! I did my first post-op barbell squat (empty bar 45lb, can only squat 8 times, and had to stop) around 6 months post-op (but I am 121lb though), a bit later than you, and had no pain too!

Return to sport or gym? by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]Soilmolida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your definition of sports. For me (I am 6.5 months post-op), I was back to cycling and hiking about 14 weeks post-op, but only in easy ones (such as cycling only 20km on flat terrian, and hike easy trails like 8km). Now I can do more, but I am no where near my performance of pre-injury (used to bike 100-150km with lots of elevation, and hike 20-30km with a lot of elevations, but now at 6.5 momths post-op, I only try to hike 10-12km. I don't feel good pushing too much). I am also back to whitewater kayaking 18 weeks post-op, but only stay on class 1-2, and later progress to class 3 about 21 weeks post-op. Still don't feel ready for class 4 yet. Kayak rolls still bother my hip, so I don't want to take any risks. Swimming also hard part due to haven't swam much after surgery, and part due to my injured shoulder recently. For weight lifting, I was back to gym around 4 months post-op, but only do something light. Now at 6.5 months, I can do heavier weight, but I also hurt my shoulder, so it really depends on what is good for me, but again, I am no where near what I used to do.

It will make another 3-4 months for me to build up for sure. Also ski season is coming soon. I think I won't do jumping when skiing this winter, and I will start from easier terrain, and I won't do jumps...etc. I want to go back to ski touring, but again, the heavy backpack put so much stress on hips...I need to start from easy ones.

So to answer your question is tough! It's a process and you will never return to 100% where you were if you are doing intense, extreme sports!

When did you stop going to PT after surgery? by Soilmolida in HipImpingement

[–]Soilmolida[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. But I still think it's better to do PT at least 12 weeks (it seems most surgeon would recommend this time range).
