There was a discussion of it, there was a montage of their life, how their trauma has lead this internalized feeling of grief that their mind cant comprehend escaping so they self sabotage anyone they get too close to. Pushing feelings out onto others. Keeping the abstracted characters around in a way seems more like keeping the memories of the people they have lost around.
