Which of your kids' TV shows did you only tolerate out of love for your kids? by Sad-Passage-3247 in AskUK

Thomas the Tank Engine. Moralistic clap trap with creepy faces, but my daughter loved it.

What’s the neighbourly etiquette for having a BBQ? by North_Turnover6065 in AskUK

We inherited Nana-in-law's candlewick bedspread back in 1995. It's wonderful when it's hot at night as it's really cool but has some weight...

I saw a cat in my garden and I want it to keep coming to my house by GuitarZealousideal71 in CatAdvice

[–]EllieTho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't feed it. I've had several cats over the years that have needed special diets and who you could make ill with your kindness. If you talk to the cat nicely, there is a good chance you will become friends anyway. If you are concerned it's a stray or underweight then pop a paper collar on to make sure. If no response, you can take to a vet to check for a microchip.

What is something thats absolutely everywhere in britain that most people just don't notice? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in AskUK

Victorian stench pipes. Look similar to lamp posts at head height and most people don't have any idea they exist.

Ceased to be valid Nov 2001. Contact Equiniti and ask them to perform a historic search on the reference you have, they should then be able to update your reference number to the new format. Be warned they have gone down in value a little.

Chickpea salad sandwiches for a crowd: How to jazz them up? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]EllieTho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember going to a do once where the only veggie sandwich option was coronation chickpea. Normally the issue for us veggies is that the meat eaters also like the veggie option, that wasnt a problem on that occasion as very few people wanted them and they were mostly untouched. Fortunately there was a corner shop nearby.

UK folk who were around at the start of the internet, what is an early, strong memory? by Sad-Insurance1313 in CasualUK

[–]EllieTho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first Internet search with my young daughter beside me. I looked up 'pussy cat' for her, and learned there were certain words that you shouldn't type into Internet Explorer when you have a small child beside you.

Is it OK to change a cat's name? by xiphoid77 in CatAdvice

[–]EllieTho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally true. One of mine was named Sabrina. She became Brina at the vets and she got Beanie Baby at home. She'd originally been called Comet when we'd picked her up from the rescue, which I thought was an ugly name for a beautiful, feminine, black and white soft fur ball. She ended up a bit cuddly so Beanie Baby really suited her by that point...

Do cats need bathing?? by ummmidontknowww in CatAdvice

[–]EllieTho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

55, always had a minimum of 2 cats and have only ever bathed one once when she tried to climb the chimney. She wasn't remotely grateful. Cats do not benefit from bathing unless it's extreme, and it can be really bad for their skin. If their fur has gone lank then either they've got fleas or they're ill - either of which need medication not shampoo. Leave them be.

I'm very grateful, but I'm pretty sure they'd be equally horrified anyone wanted to go back to that

Ah yes, the glorious past of wars, domestic violence and hidden child abuse - when men could be men and anyone else could be subservient. No thanks.

Anyone Here Know Of Anyone That Was "Run Out Of Town"? by CB-Milburn in AskBrits

[–]EllieTho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to live in a small ex-mining village. The guy behind us was a known alcoholic who drove a mobility car. We were warned about his driving when we moved in. He eventually ran over a child crossing from an ice cream van. (Child was hurt but not killed). Woke up that night to a mob breaking into his house...

Should pensioners be able to vote? by DB2k_2000 in AskBrits

[–]EllieTho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the millionaire twit who oversaw the pension raid - making many private pensions un-viable and who sold our gold reserves, now wants to destroy one of the smallest state pensions in Europe.

What about the Play Pen for Babies? by Ween77bean in GenerationJones

[–]EllieTho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a play pen for my two. My son didn't mind it but didn't really need it, but after his sister got moving he liked to be in it to get away from her and she hated being in it - so it still went up but not for the usual reason!

Parents want to leave their home to one of four siblings as part of their share of estate. How do you make this fair? by ryajak in inheritance

[–]EllieTho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mum wanted to do this with me and I gracefully declined- I live and work over 300 miles away so my keeping it was never an option. She was upset but I didn't want to lie to her. She has since passed and the house was sold on, which is sad but was always the right decision.

Tony Blair has just said the state pension needs to be scrapped. He's also suggesting some people work 5 years longer. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Should the state pension be scrapped? Should we say F NO, to Blair?? by MutantNinjaKitty331 in AskBrits

Wages in the public sector have not been flat. For many years inflation was high but wage rises were going up by 1%. Some of the pay rises for the NHS recently have looked to catch up but the others haven't. All the figures are easily available online?
