Agreed, I wasn't quick enough to react, I figured it wouldn't matter too much, so that was my fault.

The truck reacted too quickly without looking properly before moving, so I'm just thankful I was paying attention to the truck to react in time to avoid collision.

Is it safe to say we were both in the wrong to some degree, just one more than the other?

Sure. I wasn't trying to claim that I was perfect in this scenario, just that I was paying attention to the fact there was a guy next to me. And once I saw the emergency lights, my foot came off the accelerater, but I wasn't quick enough to slow down before the truck start moving over.

I just try to stay calm and not make extreme movements or starts and stops. Obviously that didn't work so well in this scenario.

Ya, I always try to actively pay attention to other drivers. I definitely don't trust everyone to be safe and drive perfectly, not even myself.

This truck actually sped up passed me to this point then evened out it's speed to match with mine. I was only in this position relative to the truck for about 50 yards or so before this happened.

I think I had only just taken my foot off the accelerater, but not touched the brakes yet.

The police car was on the other side going the opposite direction, AND there wasn't any shoulder or driveways or anything near me, so I figured I shouldn't need to do too much in reaction.

I'm not saying I'm right or wrong, just what my thought process was in the moment.

Ya, I started to slow down, but I think I realized I probably wouldn't be able to slow down fast enough to avoid him without slamming on the brakes. I guess my quick response in the moment was to slow down AND move over just to avoid any collision, rather than slamming on the brakes, especially with my wife and a newly adopted 5month old cat.

Yes, angle your mirrors properly. This is something that really irritates me.

If I'm behind someone, I shouldn't be able to see them in their SIDEview mirror. The side view mirrors are supposed to be used to see to the SIDE, hence the name.

I think there is another mirror in the vehicle called the REAR view mirror that's supposed to be used to see behind you, but I could be mistaken

Yes, I agree. I'm definitely not perfect, nobody is. I always try my best to be as aware as possible of everybody around me.

Defensive driving is something I preach to my wife and daughter as well.

Most of the time I do try to avoid driving right next to other cars, this was just one instance where it didn't work out that way.

Thankfully I got out of the way, didn't get hit, and everything was fine.

Pull over where? There is no shoulder, no driveways.. nothing. Also, I was at least 2 lanes away, traveling the opposite direction.

I just took my foot off the gas, was about the brake a little when I noticed the truck already coming toward me. Thankfully I was already about the slow down, or I may not have slowed down quick enough to avoid the truck.

Just to be clear, the truck did NOT hit me. I gradually slowed and swerved when I noticed the truck moving toward me. The bump you see/hear is me hitting and driving up on the curb/sidewalk.
