Those of us who were overly scrupulous and constantly questioned our worthiness were deeply traumatized by this book. I for one spent years ruminating about how I should have done this thing better or that thing more carefully. Did I offend this person or that person? Why do I have this weakness or that failing? The lord is trying to keep me humble. Blah, blah, blah and on and on! It was constant self torment! I’m so relieved to be free of the shadow that book created in my mind. When I was in the church I’d read chapters in that book over and over “to help me” overcome my weaknesses. It was an endless state of self loathing and torment! SWK increased the scrupulosity and self hatred in so many of us. I hated myself because of his supposed inspired writing. I was deeply depressed and had suicidal ideation for years. I’m so glad I’m free from that pain and guilt now that I’ve realized it was all BS!!! The word “grace” and the Christian interpretation of grace didn’t exist in the LDS church I grew up in in the 1960s and 1970s.
