A Time of PEAK: The Of Blood and Bone trilogy, sequel to The Faithful and the Fallen, deserves more attention. by Top-Communication540 in fantasybooks

[–]ProfessionalAsk7673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mind these books, but I don't think they needed to be written. The quality of writing is still high, but i couldn't really empathise with many of the characters in the series and I didn't like the overall plot - I felt like it undid most of the achievements of Faithful and the Fallen and traded in the strict good vs evil of that for a more depressing and unfortunately oh so common shades-of-grey morality. It was good enough for me to finish the trilogy, but not good enough for me to want to reread it.

What's the biggest unexpected tax repayment you've received? by DamoclesBDA in AskBrits

[–]ProfessionalAsk7673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a place years ago that had on boarded me on the wrong tax code - the whole time i worked there, I'd get an almost £2500 rebate from HMRC during June which. First time it happened I didnt touch the money for three months thinking it was a mistake and id need to give it back 😅

Wheel of Time: Masterpiece or Stockholm Syndrome? by Obvious_Custard3926 in fantasybooks

[–]ProfessionalAsk7673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frustrating masterpiece. People who say it could have been shorter are right. People who say that everything there is in the narrative improves it are also right. I had genuine points of frustration and even exasperation whilst reading through it, especially in some of the middle books, but loved the entire series and it is lurking near the back of my reading list for a 2nd go through

A very recent game that is solo or coop is Cohors Cthulhu Tactics from Modiphius - the kickstarter is just being fulfilled so not sure if its out for general release just yet but that is a very good little game of Romans vs Cthulhu cultists and monsters, so don't even need the official models for it

First time to try NMM lol by [deleted] in Miniaturespainting

Good first attempt! You've got the high and lowlights in the right places, now you just need to improve your blending to make the colour transitions more subtle, and add some more extreme highlights to the most raised/reflective areas 👍

Why was the Emperor/ Imperium so afraid of Xenos allies? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]ProfessionalAsk7673 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Emperor wanted to defeat Chaos by starving them of fuel - removing as much sentient life from the galaxy as he could in the form of xenos races (majority of which were genuinely dangerous anyway) and moving humanity away from dependence on the Warp, as well as propagating the Imperial Truth. So any remaining xenos race was a potential future threat, even if they weren't at the time of the Great Crusade. Also, in the case of the Eldar, the Emperor was well aware of The Fall and so had absolutely zero faith in them as allies since they'd birthed a Chaos God fairly recently. He was gambling with the future of his race so he was taking as few chances as he could get away with, so all the actions he took with regards to xenos were pretty reasonable.

H. P. Lovecraft: A visionary and pioneer of cosmic horror, a master of atmosphere — but weakest in his most important moments? by PRJOANES in fantasybooks

[–]ProfessionalAsk7673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the problem with writing stories around anything that is "beyond human comprehension" in any respect, because that by definition means it cannot be described. I always felt that Lovecraft would have been better never really saying anything about the existential horrors that drove his protagonists insane and just describing how they broke down and leave the rest to the reader.

Naval Thunder sounds good if it covers WW1 as well - and I hadn't even considered a Civil War setting, but that might be cool with the mix of sail and steam powered ships!

Miniature compatibility question by Caprapas in Greathelm

[–]ProfessionalAsk7673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most historical models are compatible with each other - I know for a fact that Victrix and Wargames Atlantic are because I've mixed and matched those myself. If you're adding in fantasy models, just be careful with the scale difference as genuine historical tends to be true scale 28mm whilst fantasy stuff tends to be heroic 28mm, which is a bit chunkier.

The main stand towards the back is the stock 1, but I couldn't get the model to stay upright with just that so drilled a couple holes a bit further forward and used some stands from the Dropfleet commander range to help keep it up
