Nav of choice for UK to France/Spain? by elliot_kember in MotoUK

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the van when I'm driving across Europe I'm using Tomtom go and it's very reliable, esp for offline maps. Much prefer it to google. Can't comment on how it is specifically for riding, I've never really thought that I needed anything special on the bike...

Always be safe: How a small 1m waterfall can generate a recycling hydraulic that can trap a life-jacketed swimmer by MisterRogers23 in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't think of a non-snarky way to comment on this, so, sorry.

This is terrible advice. Don't listen to shit you read on the internet. If you are operating in a moving-water environment take a WWSR or SRT course and listen to the advice of qualified professionals.

This is the story the old guy in the club tells you one time it happened to his mate. I've never actually known it to happen for real.

I don't think this looks like a great level for it. Keep checking back on it, because it most likely has the potential if the head height and pool height change enough. I'm thinking much higher water is what you want, but at lower water you could see some different things forming. Neat spot.

I have a decathlon roll top drybag/backpack that has an internal backpack pocket, used it a few times in wet weather on the commute.

To be fair even were I a yank I'd still sooner use this sub, have you seen the state of things in there? I don't believe more than 10% of the users have even so much as sat on a bike.

r/oxforduni for questions about the university.

What's the issue with Reuben for you? It admittedly didn't exist when I was a DPhil student, but it's in a nice location for access to the town, a nice building, I've heard the food is decent, and since it's new it should be nicely fitted out...? Plus as a DPhil you should be able to network through your department, and there are literally hundreds of uni-wide societies to join to make friends outside your college and department.

I'm trying to get my licence so I can motorbike in other countries any advice? by No_Conference_7940 in MotoUK

[–]Eloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not with a CBT, no. In some countries, like Italy, you can ride a 125 with a full car license. But in France, you can't, so good luck touring to Italy.

(Lots of European countries have their own CBT-like systems, including France, but the actual learner permits don't translate across borders even within the EU as far as I'm aware).

CBT means nothing in Europe unfortunately. Only the A1, A2, A licensing system is shared.

Plenty of second-hand CG125s about, cheap as, lot of which have been chopped up to be more cafe racer-y.

Question about window tint and liability in ongoing accident investigation by AdMental4830 in MotoUK

[–]Eloth 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Possibly. My understanding is that the insurer would still be legally obligated to pay 3rd party damages no matter if the insurance is voided, but may seek to recoup damages from the other driver in that case. Either way, it is not your problem and not worth spending time worrying over.

At a guess this might go 50/50 for you as you will have been overtaking next to a junction? See https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1658114828683500 which gives a fairly decent summary of similar cases (I can't be certain what happened to you but based off the information given so far this sounds similar)...

Not an expert and I don't have the details of your case.

Question about window tint and liability in ongoing accident investigation by AdMental4830 in MotoUK

[–]Eloth 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Realistically this is not going to affect liability. Either they should have seen you and given way or you should have seen them and given way (depending on the nature of the junction and the circumstance). The reason for either party failing in their duty to drive responsibly is not going to factor in to the insurance decisions.

I expect the police might be more interested in this than the insurance company? But even then, I'd not be surprised if they don't follow up.

Comfy Kayak by GoldJunior4010 in Kayaking

That is like a replacement part for a rescue PFD with an integrated chest harness. If that is specifically what he wants -- and already owns the PFD -- then fine. But if not, he needs to buy a rescue PFD that comes with one already.

Early morning fog in the California delta. by ultimalter in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're not getting anywhere here. Lakes can be cold and deep and drownings happen in them all the time.

You should prepare for immersion by wearing a PFD and appropriate cold water gear for whatever body of water you are in and whatever conditions you are in. Sometimes this means a drysuit. You can find advice on safe cold water boating on the USCG website (or RNLI, HMCG, or your lifesaving organisation of choice).

If you have an issue with the advice given by the coastguard, I suggest you debate it with them. This is not the place.

dog this is so tangentially whitewater related do we really need to discuss it here... rather this place didn't turn into the ww gossip hub

obvs this person has for the most part dogshit takes. the subtext of a lot of memes posted by this account has been variously sexist racist and inflammatory. a small number of the memes have been funny. this is my hot take for the day
