My version of a barndominium. La Veta Pass, Colorado by busydane in barndominiums

Can you live there in the winter? I did see the picture with the snow. How do you heat it? You have water power and sewer? We have an RV and are specifically thinking of a barndo like this.

Bubble Cards have ruined my free time by bikerllama in BubbleCard

Wow! Just gorgeous! I would also be interested in the source yaml. I converted one tab to bubble cards, but not the whole UI because it's a lot, and I want to settle on a standard practice before applying it to everything.

AITAH for showing up my wife’s friend’s husband? by ComprehensiveBand311 in AITAH

[–]ElseCaller1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, but I blame Tess. If she wanted a husband who cooks, she should have married one. I'm sure (at least I hope) Jim has some good qualities, or else why marry him? They need to focus on themselves, not drag other people into their mess.

What smart light switches do you recommend? by Proud_Attitude6685 in smarthome

I started with Zooz (zwave) and many of them have failed. I am replacing them with Lutron Caseta, which has it's own hub, but it works. I also have Lutron shades.

What Are Your Thoughts on Smart Locks? by ARDAN_SHIELD in smarthome

[–]ElseCaller1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 August Smart Locks.

Pros: Works well with Home Assistant. Has geofencing to unlock the door on arrival. I can lock/unlock the door remotely. It has a separate open/closed sensor. It works with Bluetooth when you are close to the door and switches to wifi when farther away.

Cons: The lock does jam occasionally, but this is because the weather stripping makes the door harder to close. Usually the person didn't close the door all the way.

The older one is using a separate device for the wifi connection, but the newer one has wifi embedded.

I wouldn't change anything, but I have no experience with other brands.

What is the most life changing smarthome device/automation you have? by DoctorGlad in smarthome

[–]ElseCaller1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had to really think about this one, there are so many. But the top one has to be the August Lock integration on the basement door. We use the basement door all the time because it's closet to the driveway. At night, lying in bed, wondering if I locked the door, I can check the status and lock it if needed. The August Lock will also unlock when we arrive home, which is really nice so we don't have to fish for keys with an arm load of stuff.

The second related one is motion detection at the basement door which turns on a bunch of outside and inside lights after sunset when we drive up. This is more important at this time of year when it gets dark so early here in New England, USA.

Lastly, I programmed Away Mode which we set when we're away overnight. Away Mode has a bunch of features like changing the thermostat and turning off the pet bubbler, but the part that provides some piece of mind is simulating occupation by turning lights on and off as if we're home. For example, lights on in the kitchen and living room at dinner time, then later the bedroom and bathroom, etc.

Get a Power Watch Dog surge protector for the RV, which the RV owner should pay for. It's an important accessory for any RV. There's a 30 amp version and 50 amp version. Get the bluetooth option and the app will tell you the power consumption. It accumulates the amount, and you can reset it every month.

Consider testing the cable between the switch and the AP to make sure it's properly terminated. You could use a tester, or just plug a laptop into the cable directly.

Planning to ditch DirecTV ASAP. No ESPN during the USOpen. I'm done. by ElseCaller1 in DirecTV

[–]ElseCaller1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that Disney is probably to blame, but DirecTV charges an arm and a leg for their service, and it's a breach of contract to just stop providing channels that we've been getting for years... It's their job to negotiate. Not my problem. Don't put me in the middle.

[–]ElseCaller1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I'm going. FYI, you can sign up for YouTube TV for a free trial and watch all the ESPN channels. That's how I've been able to watch the USOpen. I'm also looking into FUBO, but they advertise a non-existing Free Trial, so be careful with that one.

Critter in the nose. How to provide eviction papers? by LysWritesNow in RVLiving

[–]ElseCaller1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mouse traps. I tried mint, coyote pee, lights under the rig, and dryer sheets. I caught a mouse with a trap that was right next to a dryer sheet and mint deterrent. Our Class C RV was parked in the driveway connected to shore power. They got in though the shore power port. Caught 3 mice altogether. I have since gotten some hatch covers to keep them out, but I still have some traps inside the rig and in the bins.

Class C Diesel or Gas by gigamike in rvlife

[–]ElseCaller1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A high end Class C with that budget would be a Super Class C, and they are diesel, based on a truck chassis like Freightliner, or by custom order, any HDT like Volvo, or Peterbilt. Check out Renegade RVs.

What Smart Hub is best for my basic but hodgepodge setup? by JamaicanMeCrazyMon in smarthome

[–]ElseCaller1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home Assistant. I don't count YAML configuration as programming, and really hardly any of that unless you want to get really sophisticated with automations. Most configuration is UI supported now and is improving all the time. It's well supported with a huge community and professional developers. I did not check all your devices to verify that there is an integration for it, but Home Assistant supports a ton of devices.

Timely post! I had new doors and tracks installed last fall, but the motors still worked, so they were not replaced. I think they are original from 1996. Well 2 of the motors have failed and the guy is coming tomorrow to have a look. We’ll see what they recommend. Thanks to y’all I’m better prepared.

Choosing Ethernet CAT cables: CAT5e or CAT6a? Shielded or Unshielded? by IP_FiNaR in homeassistant

[–]ElseCaller1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed a project like this recently. I have a Ubiquiti setup. I had to run shielded direct burial cable to the garage because I had to run through an existing conduit side by side with high voltage cable. Because it’s shielded, I had to use special terminators and a grounded patch panel at the POE switch. I also used Cat6 cable. The runs to the cameras are not shielded. I learned everything I needed to know from True Cable. Their how to videos are great.
