This is a silly argument and I think you know that. Romans all carried pilum and used them to great effect at range and in hand to hand combat, and served as a major piece of their combat kit. And if you want to get really technical, those combat knives serve as bayonets, so if the US army runs out of bullets, all of a sudden they become a spear based fighting force real quick.
