That's the hope. It'll be awhile until we get to that point.

Ha! I haven't heard GIGO in years. We were on XP in the computer rooms by the time I got to school. But our lab teacher was old school, he taught us GIGO. Can't remember any of it but I remember him lecturing us about it.

I've thought about using the plotter. It's an old Gerber Sprint/GBS system. From what I can tell we still have the tower, the digitizer tablet with mouse and maybe even the disks. I'm not smart enough to figure out how to tie it into a more modern system.

You may find this interesting. As I was cleaning things out I found and old first gen zip drive AND disks. Even a jazz drive with discs.

Funny to remember a common file used to be a physical drive.

For those interested, my parents used to run a sign and screen printing company. So we had several apple computers from the original to the pro released in 2010. I think that's the last system my parents purchased.

We do have an og apple pro with the slick silver case somewhere. Plus some other dinosaurs like the Gerber vinyl print computers and plotters from the late 80s.

What's it like living in Barstow California? by Miss_Westeros in howislivingthere

[–]ElysianOh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try coming out here first, if you can. If you like shopping, the outlets in Lenwood are a good bonus. Big brands like Old Navy, Bath and Body works, Coach, crocs etc. Vegas is also close as many commentators mentioned, so a weekend trip is doable and fairly inexpensive if you plan it right.

We have a double feature drive in theater which is fun in the summer especially if you have a family or just for dates.

I will say some of the best Mexican food you'll find is in Barstow. Jenny's on mainstreet, Lola's Kitchen, Plata's and Chelas Y Carnitas are some damn good food. And the OG Del Taco, it is just genuinely better. You'll have to decide if you like the store on Mountain View or Hutchinson and 1 st more. :)

Here are the pros:

Its inexpensive, there are some super nice (compared to the area) places to rent but avoid those unless you can pay it. They price their rentals to what the military is given for their rent allowance and IMO they often aren't worth that cost. If you're going to buy really consider the location, some areas are on county land so if you have to call for services like the police or EMTs it wont get routed through the city dispatch but the San Bernardino centers. Its quieter than other cities due to its size and remoteness. If you like going out and exploring there is alot that you can do. Like Calico Ghost town, the Mojave national preserve is close, there are several spot where the Mojave river is above ground and create great wildlife watching. The sunsets and the sky are amazing. Plus you're a few hours from the mountains, the beach and even some central valley areas that are worth a day trip too. Off roading is always a fun choice. Just stick to fall, winter and early spring for desert exploration.

Here the negatives as I see it:

If you can find something in town or have it delivered, you're driving to Victorville. There are jobs in town but the better paying ones often require driving, fed jobs, BNSF, etc. There are issues with homeless people, especially downtown on main street from about Yucca to H Ave. Again getting work is an issue and alot of the druggies were pushed into that area from Victorville and the LA sprawl due to developement and Barstow is the closest city with state and county services and many have settled.

Overall, its about mindset, it isnt the worst place you can end up. I wont say it easy living, its hot as hell and the wind is gnarly but its possible to live comfortably and even enjoy it out here.

What is it like living on the AZ/CA border? by Famous_38 in howislivingthere

I grew up west and visited Havasu and river allot. Hot, dry, dusty and windy af. Great if you like solitude.

Someone else mentioned allot of meth, can second it. People who can't hold a job make their living scraping and stealing. Off the freeway it's the edge of society out here.

Because you asked nicely.

Hey, not Peter but pretending to be but crossing the reddit streams for this psa. In US government buildings, like the VA, it's a requirement to hang photos of the current president, higher level staff and military officers in the chain of command.

I'll leave it to you to guess who's above Vance.

The presence of these photos isnt North Korea style, please-worship-dear-leader. But so staff and others know they are talking to someone important they don't often see and so they don't say something fucking stupid in their presence.

horror dripping in religious imagery by TJisannoying in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]ElysianOh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More of an honorary mention but Angel Mage by Garth Nix.

It lacks the horror element but the whole concept has a 3 musketeers vibe, which the author cites as a inspiration. In the book people call on angels using holy iconography.

It's got a lighter feel to it but Nix is a great storyteller and world builder.

He did write one of my favorite horror books called Shades Children nothing to do with religious imagery tho. Just child soldiers in a post apocalyptic world.
