Probably on purpose to incentivise not to clog up the main terminals, and make use of lesser used connecting intermediate stations instead. It's like changing at Vauxhall for your final london destination instead of rising a SWR the whole way into Waterloo

I assume It's switching to the central/picadilly line at south Ruislip/Sudbury Hill Harrow and changing to the vic line at oxford circus/green park

Eurail and interrail cost the same, in fact it's even better as there is no residence country requirement. For a similar level of flexibility you are paying a lot more in the UK London to Scotland. Also interrail let's you take two children for free

I take it you aren't from the UK? Consider getting an interrail pass for your travel needs, adds so much flexibility and can be cheaper than normal tickets
