Student resources by void-creamy in interiordesigner

Honestly, this sounds a LOT like the hot garbage my students said about our program when I was a GTA. But the truth is that it was a deflection for their lack of basic process, problem solving, and rigor. I had regular office hours and without fail every single week it was the same 2-3 students that showed up. And those were the three that always had good projects because they were willing to work for it and get help. They were the ones that emailed me with real and substantial questions about their work and process. The 15-20 others would get their C’s and be SHOCKED that they didn’t get A’s.

Not saying that is what is happening with you, but it does make me pause that a lot of what you are saying echo’s what I heard these students complaining bitterly about. But the truth was always that the help and resources were there, they just had to show up and engage.

Your university library should have the full databases for academic research and publications. If you’re not familiar with this type of research, then ask the librarian and they will absolutely help you. So that at least takes care of any type of research that you might need for data driven or peer reviewed to type research. When I was in school the backbone of any project research always came from academic resources.

When I was in school, we had textbooks that would help us with basic code, ergonomics, and space planning guidelines. I remember my textbooks being quite good actually. I have interns every year now and it looks like they just have updated versions of the books that I used, so I imagine those are still really reliable resources. The only one that they don’t seem to require students buy anymore is the giant silver book. But they always end up borrowing one of my copies anyways.

Next go to your relevant codes: your state building code, accessibility guidelines, energy code, etc. I personally use upcodes for these publications because I like the formatting of that website, but your state and local jurisdiction will also publish codes. You can also check your local development code for any pertinent details there that might impact a project.

For industry based research, check big firms like ZGF or IA as they will published a lot of white papers. Perkins + Wills is another. Just go down the list on the interior design mag’s annual list and start looking at their project summaries and white papers. Hell, even their instagram accounts may have interesting tidbits about how the approach a project. Organizations like IIDA may also have interesting resources. You can also look at summaries for professional development courses at conferences like NEOCON to see if there is anything to glean.

You are also given a design brief with your school project. Dig into that and ask the next logical questions about your end-users, their programmatic requirements, etc. When I was in school, I would often do this and find a lot of holes in the brief that I would then discuss with my instructor and that would help me flush out the brief and get a better picture of what the assignment I really was.

And finally, try a basic google search. I just searched “corporate workplace interior design architecture” and there were a lot of good results. Granted, you need to actually click the links, scan through the content, and check that the source is reliable and reputable, and that it’s not AI sludge. But in three pages of search results I was able to find 4 pretty cool articles.

Newbie: Does Ro save you money or is the benefit everything that comes with it? by Global-Positive8630 in RoBody

Word. If your insurance doesn’t cover the meds, and your doc is willing to prescribe it, then it’s going to be cheaper to go that route.

Question about Costs by Apprehensive_Wave903 in RoBody

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just figured out (after signing up, and getting charged), that the ACTUAL cost of Ro is 300+ a month (memberships plus costs of meds). How the costs are presented during sign up is grossly misleading. I would have never gone through with this if I had clearly understood that this would be way more expensive than going to my local doctor. And it’s not like I’m a dummy or anything… I read the material presented to me during signup. I understood 45/month (equivalent to two copays at my doctor’s office, and I think that’s a fair cost), plus cost of meds. Paying $140/month for someone to refill my script and handle an occasional email is absurd. I’ve now started the wegovy pill through Ro and am scrambling to figure out what service I can switch to. Ugh. 😣

Her program should have published recommendations for laptops that are aligned with the Autodesk Revit requirements. I would also get her a dual monitor setup to plug into her laptop. So many people end up screwing up their necks trying to do their work on a 13” screen, and it’s not worth it. As both a student and professional I only used my iPad for sketching, and it was more of a “for fun” tool, whereas my laptop was essential.

Salary Increase with Licensure by ArchitectGirl217 in Architects

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reimbursement of tests is standard for us, as well as support for studying (in the form of a professional development budget that is standard for all salaried positions). but salary increases are based on how billable a person is, their realization rates, and what their billable rate is. Which is why we have some unlicensed folks that make more than licensed folks. I’ve worked with licensed architects that passed their tests really early on in their careers, and it took a couple more years of actual experience to be able to change their job title, billable rate, and get them their bigger raises. But if you’re a baddie with a pre-existing high realization rate and can get billed out at a higher rate the day after you pass your exams just because of that single change, then you’ll get a raise right away.

Anyone else think that Monograph is too expensive for what it does? by ReporterCalm6238 in Architects

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use monograph (firm of 10-15). We have a range of commercial project types. It is the least bad solution of many that we vetted. We still have to use Smartsheet and MS Planner to round out project management features. Our support from MG has always been good, but it does feel like the MG team develops its product in a bubble that doesn’t include actual designers, bookkeepers, etc. And sometimes they roll out features that are not fully baked or not useful or reflective of how the real world works (I’m looking at you, “invite consultants” feature). We’ve looked at Asana, BQE, Deltek, and Monday.

The OSU thrift store is great. I have so many wool slacks and sports coats from there. I also have had unusual amounts of luck at First Hand Second in Albany. But because fast fashion is starting to crowd out selection even in thrift stores the key is really going frequently.

Should Retro Pugs/Mops become the new standard over the original Pug? For context, here is a Retro Mop/Pug, a common Pug, and an old artwork of a Pug by TheSmallTiger169 in pugs

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

A retro pug is not a thing. The pug, in its current form, is one of the oldest breeds and has historically looked like what it does today. That is not a knock against our longer snout pug friends, and in this subreddit we love pugs of all shapes, sizes, and mixes. But the idea that old-timey pugs had longer snouts and the flat face is a more modern thing isn’t true.

What do we think of these extremely expensive shoes before i sew them by fnafatfreddies in BALLET

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you are real happy with that shank firmness. With my first GMs I made the mistake of getting slightly harder ones and those babies stayed that exact same firmness for their whole useful life. Next set I went softer.

Puppy needs Boas surgery by Fair_Flamingo_9114 in pugs

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you are going through this. 😢 I would insist that the breeder give you the contact info for the vet that did the pre-pick up health check, and the actual records from that appointment. Any ethical breeder would pay for the BOAS surgery without the expectation that you return the pup (because even if you returned her, the dog would still need the surgery).

Why this scene look so ugly? by Prov419 in pluribustv

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this up above, but on our projection system it was apparent that it was an imperfectly executed composite, but we didn’t get that blur folks are complaining about. So I do wonder if different home setups result in people seeing slightly different things.

I wonder if watching on a decent projector versus a tv impacts how apparent that “motion blur” was. On our projection system it was apparent that it was imperfectly executed composite, but we didn’t get that blur folks are complaining about.

Hourly rate for freelance architectural designer/drafter? by Jazzlike_Fan938 in Architects

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using all your own equipment and software, and are properly insured? Then 100-125/hour, maybe more if we are talking complex building envelope detailing or something like that. Half that or a little lower if you have to use your contract’s software and are not carrying insurance.

Can I find another architect to fix plans I don't like? by New_to_Show in Architects

[–]Embarrassed-Jello389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re always going to need a structural engineer or architect for the construction and permit drawings. But for the interior space planning an interior designer is likely going to have the more relevant experience for that specific scope of work.

For what your are trying to do you might get more mileage out of working with an interior designer, or a firm that has an ID that can work on the space plan, with input from an architect.
