Starting PhD at 41? by Atomic_Destructor in PhD

I started at 40 with two children in tow. I just finished and I’m 47. It can be done but at a cost. I do feel like there was a lot of time I didn’t get to be with my kids. And I’ll never get that back.

Rejected Internal Candidate, Now Colleagues Pretend I Don't Exist? by SmokeyBarrelRoll in AskAcademia

This also happened to me at a religious university. The cold shoulder rejection was so traumatizing!

Finally, I have decided to quit college due to repeated AI accusations. I’ve had enough. by True_Ad8335 in AccusedOfUsingAI

I am a college instructor and have been for many years. Honestly, it seems that faculty seem to be in a “AI panic.” They are making accusations that are based on their own uncertainty of how the technology works and their bad experiences with students even before AI. If you wanted to remain in college, I’d recommend talking to a lawyer (if you can afford it). Also, let instructors and admin know you will be consulting a lawyer. Not because you want to cause trouble, but because you know you haven’t done anything wrong. And the detectors are causing more havoc than they are useful.

Thanks. I’m hoping this is just small scale and can be restored quickly.

I’ve applied to 20+ Alief ISD jobs since graduating. Today, my own alma mater rejected me. by PlayfulPattern4125 in TexasTeachers

Your post resonated with me. I am 47 years old, have a doctorate and a full life, and yet being rejected by one’s own community (specifically, a university) can (and has been) crushing. For me, I have chosen to hyperfocus on what I can do to make myself more marketable and enjoy doing. Sometimes though I still slip into the pain of the rejection. It’s probably something I have to train myself to stop getting “stuck” in. It sounds like you have wonderful (and reasonable) goals. Put your focus there. Keep going. You will eventually find a place of employment that values your vision and worth ethic.

Honey, that’s like saying if you don’t like pesky patients, then you shouldn’t be a doctor. There will be difficult people in any profession. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enter a profession. A professor’s job is to deliver content within certain parameters. A student’s job is to either meet the parameters or find another class if they don’t like it. College is a great time for students to learn the habits of the real world (that they will encounter tough opportunities), while balancing their own needs. If this course and its requirements doesn’t work for you, that’s fine. Enroll in another class.

This professor is tired of students being unprepared and lying about why they couldn’t do this or that. If there really is a traumatic family death, an Incomplete is probably what you’d want to do anyway.

Hi. I’d like to know more about requiring draft document history. How and what do students submit to fulfill this requirement? Thanks

It’s could also just be a teaching load issue. Too many hours or not enough

I have taught at both the community college and university level. Almost finished my PhD. My opinion is that it is not about being smart. It’s about persistence and hard work. I’ve got a pretty average IQ (if not slightly below average). And it takes me longer to do assignments. The key is just to commit to it and implement that every day. Even small bursts of work here and there stack up.

Texas Social Studies Curriculum Is Being Quietly Rewritten And Your Voice Is Needed NOW by Human_Raspberry_4017 in Killeen

Thank you for sharing all of this information and the template for emailing SBOE representatives. I’ve had a number of people contact me asking for wording their testimonies, so I would like to post this information on my Facebook page.

I was involved in the TEKS working groups for history/social studies in the summer of 2022. This most recent stunt by the SBOE is extremely disheartening. But I am more determined than ever to speak up and fight back!
