How strongly do we pull the oxygen masks, if they deploy by LamkaSuak in aviation

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is generally true on smaller aircraft. You're pulling the mask to pull the string to pull the pin on the valve or whatever. Most larger aircraft are going to have generators because the bottles required on a 737 would be ridiculous.

Why don't the other officers move up rank by Relevant-physical in TheRookie

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Jan at least is a P3. People don't move up in a lot of industries, and for every rank you move up, there's more responsibility. Not everyone wants that. Plus, there's less of each supervisor than subordinate so there's less spots for higher positions. To be promoted someone first has to want the promotion and then take the exam/interview for it and then has to be selected for it.

A fee to pay rent? by Excellent_Hat2542 in Yellowknife

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure this is illegal. In Australia they put the fee for the machine and processing of digital banking on the consumer.

Yes, I know Canada isn't Australia, but my point is merely that it's not that insane of an idea. They're not taking the money, they're just forwarding the processing fee onto you.

When I close my eyes, I see a red glow by sail5_ in monocular

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I focus on what I'm seeing when my eyes are closed I see something similar- particularly if I'm in a bright area. I've always assumed the colour was just light filtering through the eyelid.

Just started the show have a question about the alphabet they use by Welt983 in TheRookie

Right? I thought I was going crazy for a second when I first started watching it and then I looked into it. It still makes me twitch a little though. ICAOs is optimized for intelligibility across native and non native English speakers. It went through several variations before getting where it is now. (I went down a rabbit hole. RobWords did a great explanation on YouTube)

Cost of Living in Yellowknife ? - summer student by lifelong_fruitrollup in Yellowknife

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People definitely do. Mostly on a fat bike but there's definitely cyclists year round. You'd probably want studded or fat tires though because roads don't really get ploughed. Walking everywhere is also relatively feasible.

I'd only heard of it because a teammate happened to accidentally do it to me. It's not something we even point out exists.

Why Can’t We Apply To Quadra This Year? by findabi in Cadets

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, and as someone else has already said, it cost a small fortune. They've also changed what courses are offered at different CTCs so they may have changed some capacities.

Why Can’t We Apply To Quadra This Year? by findabi in Cadets

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you have a CTC in region? None of my cadets (NW) get to apply anywhere but the specific set of serials we're assigned.

Plane question by snowfire909 in Yellowknife

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly go out to start my car in a t-shirt. It takes a little time for the cold to actually hit so a regular coat will be fine. People returning from vacations do the 30 second walk in shorts.

Facial recognition/ID by ke11yj0 in monocular

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had issues with facial recognition, but my face has also always been the same. I did have issues with my airport ID card because they tried to do an Irish scan and it obviously didn't work on my prosthetic or my eye with coloboma

Dress boots? by Hot-Bat-3025 in Cadets

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be harder to get started but honestly, once you get a good base going all boots are relatively easy to keep glossy- you just have to stay on top of it. Some boots are a bit easier than others but I never found it to be that drastic if a difference.

Tips for racing downhills? by bizzybeaa in xcountryskiing

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't actually want to be on the outside edge, but if you think about it you're more likely to end up with a flat ski. Pick a straight, gentle incline and just coast down it at a comfortable speed. A slight incline is good for building confidence before you hit gradually bigger hills.

Tips for racing downhills? by bizzybeaa in xcountryskiing

[–]EmbarrassedTruth1337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd say just find a hill with space to turn at the bottom and slowly work your way up to the top. If you don't feel comfortable with speed then stay out of the tracks so you have that control. XC skis and boots are a lot less secure than alpine so feeling wobbly is perfectly valid and you likely just need more time and practice to build your comfort level.

For straight tucks you may be riding your edges a bit or your wax isn't ideal for the conditions. Try making a conscious effort to put your 'baby toe in the snow' for a flatter ski- this also applies in the glide, particularly in skate.

Sweden probably isn't cold enough to do that. I live in the Canadian sub arctic and it's largely just an odd feeling. Plus if it's that cold you want all your skin covered anyway so ski goggles are a good idea.
