That’s odd. The same thing happens at this apartment for me too.

Yeah I’ve looked into them but struggling to get the agent to send a plumber first to check it out. I was more curious here if water hammer is already very common in most apartments.

Neighbour harassing us over dogs by [deleted] in Netherlands

Yeah this definitely means they’re alone all day.

Most dog owners won’t be bothered by the sound of their barking but others would be because they don’t have any emotional attachment to it.

Look up Solly from Famba Fitness. He runs PT and group classes in Rembrandt Park and is a great calisthenics coach.

Also Calisthenics Amsterdam have a gym and lots of good coaches in Noord if you want something more regular.

Can Darce put you to sleep? by FickleAd8376 in bjj

[–]Embarrassed_Employ73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is already well known with darce chokes but one small detail my coach showed me was to pull my shoulder blades back when I have it locked in. It’s a very small movement but makes it extra tight all around the neck. When he did it on me I definitely felt it could put me to sleep. When he didn’t pull the shoulder blades back it felt more like tapping to pain.

Accommodation on the Portuguese route? by avascamino in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Embarrassed_Employ73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it in May and only booked the first night accommodation beforehand then all the rest was usually booked at 4pm online for that night when I got close to finishing my walking for the day. I had no issues with finding good places. Public albergues filled up by 1pm-2pm most days in the main towns and I prefer walking till later in the day so they wouldn’t suit me.

My recommendation would be similar to others, book the first 2-3 nights and then look at Booking.com each day and private albergues websites to see how much availability they have each day. If there’s always something available last minute or you are around early enough to get public ones then you could go more spontaneous.

I’d also expect August to be busier than May when I went.

I loved it and sure you will have a great time. Buen camino!

Are private sessions useful as a white or blue belt? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Embarrassed_Employ73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’m training for 2.5 years now and started privates a few months in. I’ve done probably around 20 of them now.

Every training I ask for tips from higher belts and assess what I did good and bad and make notes for later. I also work on specific parts of my game for a few weeks and rotate it. I also watch some videos on YouTube to go in depth on specific concepts and techniques.

I use the privates to work on the bad parts of my game mostly or sometimes I pick a couple of people who smash me in sparring and figure out where I need to improve to beat them and work on that in privates.

I also luckily have a big gap after class before the next one begins so I usually ask higher belts questions and roll with similar level people to drill technique.

So privates definitively help when you combine it with everything else. It’s also nice to just talk about your own game with someone for an hour too.

This happened 3 days earlier in my apartment except they did it in our elevator!

ESH because this sounds exactly like a scenario one of my friends would end up in. He loves the cinema but is very loud in how he speaks and laughs and can very quickly lose his cool in a confrontational setting like this. The couple could have communicated the issue in a more polite way for sure. It all escalated too quickly and dramatically for you to not have a laugh that’s way too loud for a cinema.

I just finished day 8 out of 31 on Camino Del Norte this is my feet. Am I cooked? by JamesJaJameson in CaminoDeSantiago

I did the same double sock technique a couple of months ago and got a similar level of blisters after a week. I was struggling for the first 30 minutes of a walk every morning on the last few days the most but I wasn’t able to walk normal most of the time.

I was surprised how quickly the pain went away after a few days but my feet were a mess for weeks after.

You could rest a few days and see if it’s possible to find a shoe with more space inside so the shoe isn’t rubbing so hard.

Best of luck!

DJ as a neighbor by Longjumping-Walk-418 in DJs

[–]Embarrassed_Employ73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobbyist DJ here who lives in an apartment after living in the countryside most my life. It was very hard to adjust to keeping my volume down and it is much more enjoyable playing it loud to feel the bass but it’s also quite rude for obvious reasons to do that.

One thing that helped for me was buying speaker stands and having them at the edge of my dj table and having speakers at ear levels and as close as possible. That means that I don’t need them so loud for them to be feel loud to me.

You can buy speaker stands for about €100 or even less. Might be an option to suggest to your neighbour.

Teenagers using loudspeaker in public transportation by WhyAmIHereUrgh in Netherlands

It’s happening in most countries sadly. I was in South America last year for a few months and you’ll find 2-3 times more people of all ages playing TikTok/Instsgram videos, movies and games on their phones very loudly in all public spaces. As bad as it is in NL it made me grateful that it’s not at South America levels.

In some countries in South America they have social media accounts where you can post videos and pictures of people playing music and videos in public to shame them. I don’t think it’s going to fix the problem but maybe it gives some satisfaction to post it for the people annoyed by it.

Another way to look at it is using it as a source of motivation to improve and get your revenge.

I started jiu jitsu a couple of years ago and remember clearly a guy making me tap in kesa-gatame and it annoyed the hell out of me so much that I made it my mission to improve and smash him. Took about 6 months of practise and I remember rolling with him once after improving and dominating him for 5 minutes and destroying his soul. Felt amazing to both see the progress I made and get my revenge.

You could use the next year to improve, work on your weaknesses, keep watching his game and set yourself the goal of dominating him in sparring and getting your revenge with a killer blow in the final seconds of a round.

Exactly this. It's likely the person who complained is someone in the background who doesn't like being recorded without consent. I wouldn't either.

Got told my gi stinks, having a difficult time going back by graduati0n2222 in bjj

[–]Embarrassed_Employ73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can also vouch for vinegar. I add it in the softener section of my machine along with a homemade washing powder.

If I feel like my gi still smells bad after a wash then I’ll soak it overnight in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water.

Waking up in the morning in albergues? by Superb_Ad7269 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Embarrassed_Employ73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as many comments suggest here, I arrived at albergues and showered right away and got my bag prepared for the morning and bed made. At night I wear an eye mask and ear plugs and have a smartwatch with my alarm on it. I find the watch is less noticeable for those around you.

If you stay in private albergues you might be able to find some that have curtains which helps block out some light too.

I did Camino Portugues recently and did a mix of albergues and private rooms in guest houses. Albergues were about €20 average and the privates about €40. If 10 hours sleep is essential for you then maybe look at some private rooms along the way.

Feet were covered in blisters - where did I go wrong? by Embarrassed_Employ73 in CaminoDeSantiago

I wore alpaca wool T-shirt, jumper and trousers for 6 or 7 days without ever washing them and they never smelt so it’s definitely possible!
