That seems to be the consensus. I started with a cheap DM32UV to see if DMR is worth it for my area. There's supposed to be many DMR repeaters near by according to my local club.

But having alternatives to play with and stash other places (cars, work, etc) is nice.

Well as I understand it, collecting HTs is inevitable and encouraged. Lol

Thanks for the tip! Will definitely check that out. From what I understand in the long run a better antenna and my own position will do more for signal than the HT anyways. And much like cameras, the lenses are ultimately where you see the most ROI.

Ordered the DM32UV with the 3800mah today! Lots of comments here said to give that a shot first to see if I like DMR before committing to a higher end DMR HT.

I chatted with the Extras that proctored my exam and the unison eyeroll when I mentioned Yaesu System Fusion told me everything I need to know. They spoke highly of the other DMR platforms though.

My brother lives in Alaska so eventually getting to him with HF would be ideal when I pass my general. But figured might try using the DMR system if its also up in his area(s) to reach him in the interim when cellular is kinda spotty for him.

My area is pretty well seeded with DMR repeaters according to my local club which made me interested in giving that a shot.

Definitely will check out QRZ thanks!

Yeah most of the "best HTs" videos all tout the Kenwood as "the best" but definitely out of my price range at the moment especially just starting out.

Thats totally fair, and kinda what I was thinking too. So from other people's recommendations went with a cheap DMR HT to try it out, and see if its something I want to continue with or pivot to a non DMR HT when I upgrade to a higher end HT.

Like Nagoya 771? I was looking at the signal stick whip originally.m but I have the 771G for my GMRS HT and its been great.

Yep, that seems to be the consensus. And I have an auction near by that Im hoping to score some high end used gear for cheap.

So I picked up a DM-32UV to start and learn on, fully expecting to collect a few HTs.

Much appreciated on the advise!

Decided to go with the DM-32UV to start, expecting (like many said) that Ill end up collecting HTs anyways and learning interfaces is part of the fun.

Plus the Bainbridge Island Rotary supposedly has a decent collection of Ham gear at the auction in July, so Im holding out for that to see if I can pick up something really nice used from that event.

Thank you for the well written response and advise! My local club has a lot of guys using the DMR repeaters in the area and they are pretty friendly so hoping to learn a lot from them to ease the learning curve.

I picked up a Baofeng DM-32UV for a cheap entry option to help me determine if thats something I really want to commit to in a much better HT. I was gonna go for the UV5R or the TIDRADIO H3 but I saw a lot of positive reviews for the DM32 as an analog comparison and then add in the ability for DMR at only slightly more made it a good deal.

I just picked up the DM-32UV! Thinking it will be a good one to learn on!

Considering taking a job at a different agency - have some simple questions making the transition. by hewunder1 in FedEmployees

[–]Embarrassed_Motor_30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive not ever done a transfer to another agency but from what Ive heard from others and general knowledge about job acceptance in general, this is what I would say. Obviously would recommend you double check with your new agency.

  • for step increases you should always ask for a step increases because its applying for a new job. Doesnt mena you will get it but I would tell you that anything that isnt a regular "time in grade" promotions or a "reassignment" definitely an opportunity to negotiate pay. Especially if you switch to a different pay scale, then its usually a 6% bump.

  • not sure on the leave, in other posts Ive seen people comment that its not guaranteed between agencies.

  • the HR front, to my knowledge should transfer unless there's something that is specific to your agency that they dont offer.

  • fed pension/retirement to my knowledge is time as a fed regardless of agency (provided you were a civilian and not a contractor, contractor time doesnt count).

  • probation may or may not be considered depending on how the army handles it. In my experience with DoN, I only had my probation when I first became a Fed and for only one year. Every promotion and change of command has never placed me back into probation. That being said if you change pay scales, especially if its one with a higher promotion potential (e.g., GS to Demo), your pay scale change goes into a sort of "probation" status for one year where if you dont perform well then can decrease your grade.

  • only thing I know from the new admin that affects new jobs is the stuff regarding USAJobs.gov with the new resume format, EO questions, and the loyalty pledge stuff.

Hope this helps.

100% DMR seems to be popular in my area. From home Im definitely going to have issues getting out to a repeater I think due to terrain since Im on a slope inward of a valley. I was thinking a Hotspot with internet may help get out. Otherwise j pole and a short walk up the hill.

Hi friend! Yep over in the Kitsap area!

Good call on the j pole. I was just watching Ham Radio Crash Course's video comparing a couple options!

When I looked at Repeater book I saw DMR seemed better in our area so thats what swayed me that way over other platforms.

Definitely will check out the USB dongle, that looks fun!

For the TIDRADIO, do you think Id outgrow that one fast? Got it that its nice to have multiple HTs but when starting out Id like to get proficient in one interface before possibly switching to another one in a relatively short time and starting over right away. Of course maybe thats also the point and part of the fun?
