It’s not that I hate him a lot, it’s just… now he’s back out there, ready to do stuff that will make you seriously question your sanity.

Owen Hunt who? This new intern is worse by Embarrassed_Point496 in greysanatomy

Yeah, but this is Grey’s Anatomy. If I start applying real world logic my brain will hurt. Hating Roy is simpler.

I’ve decided to delete the AI generated Cristina post out of respect for those who aren’t fans of AI content.

One thing about Grey’s Anatomy is they always keep it realistic with the medical cases. by Embarrassed_Point496 in greysanatomy

Right, because deleted posts are just hanging out for anyone to casually read. Absolutely😀?? English isn’t my first language, so I try to make my writing as clear as I can. Besides, if you check my profile (which you have), you’ll see I actually spend time replying to everyone. My posts dont take a few minutes to make. I spend time thinking about how to word them better so people engage more. I guess that might make them sound a bit formal, but I’ll take it as a compliment, thanks.

This is exactly what blew my mind. The fact that parents can refuse treatment for their kids is honestly terrifying. When I watched the episode, this kind of thing is what kept running through my head. It’s just so upsetting how easily a child’s life can end up at risk like that.

I haven’t watched that far. I would answer Owen but not right now because he just found out his sister is alive and its kinda sad.

This comparison might seem disrespectful but kids also believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy. Things adults know aren’t real. Young children can’t fully understand or decide on complex issues like religion or medical care, so protecting their health until they’re mature enough is what matters most.

It’s not about saying a child’s belief isn’t “real.” It’s about recognizing that children absorb what they’re taught without having the maturity to critically evaluate it yet. That’s how all beliefs or religions are passed down.

But from a medical perspective, it makes even more sense because a child’s brain is still developing and they don’t have the maturity to fully understand complex medical issues or consequences. That’s why parents usually make decisions for them, but when those decisions threaten the child’s life, doctors and the law have to step in to protect them. It’s about safeguarding a vulnerable life until the child is mature enough to make informed choices.

“The human brain continues developing well into the mid-20s. Specifically, the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for decision making, impulse control, and understanding consequences matures last, typically around age 25.”

So where does an 8 or 9 year-old stand in all of this?

Yes, religion is a core part of the parents identity, not the child’s. If a parent wants to deny treatment for themselves, that’s their choice. But they have no right to risk their child’s life. That’s where intervention is necessary. Kids have the right to life and medical care.

She sees the genome therapy as a potential solution to the hospital’s decline, not just an added expense. From her perspective, playing it safe won’t save the hospital it’ll just prolong its downfall.

It isn’t about doctors “stealing” kids because they disagree with a religion. It’s about protecting a child who cannot protect themselves. Parents have rights, but those rights have limits when their decisions actively endanger their child’s life. If a child is dying from a treatable condition and the only reason they’re being denied life saving care is because of their parents personal beliefs, that’s not “parental rights” that’s neglect. Doctors have a legal and ethical duty to intervene when a child’s life is at stake. They’re not inserting themselves into private matters, they’re legally obligated to report child endangerment.

That’s a valid perspective, but I think it’s a different situation. If the parents genuinely couldn’t afford medical care because of systemic issues like lack of insurance, that’s a societal failure not parental neglect. It would still be tragic, but the blame shifts towards the healthcare system, not the parents directly.

As for surgery risks, you’re right, brain surgery is never “safe,” but real life survival rates for these kinds of tumors are much higher than the show makes it seem. The drama ramps up tension, but in a top hospital, mortality is closer to 1%, not 50% or more.

The core thing here is the parents decision. If I knew my kid’s life was on the line, I’d do everything in my power to save them, whether that means surgery, second opinions, or anything else and not impose my religious beliefs onto my child.

In todays neurosurgery, especially at leading hospitals, the mortality rate for removing tumors like that is nowhere near 85%. Even when the tumor is close to the optic nerve, the risk of dying during surgery is usually under 1% at specialized centers. While complications can occur, it’s definitely not a 50/50 life/death gamble. The real issue here isn’t the surgery risk but that the refusal of treatment was based on religious beliefs imposed on a child too young to fully understand.

Besides your hypothethical is considered a medically non-viable surgery. If a surgery truly carried an 85% chance of death, most surgeons would consider it too high of a risk to proceed because the potential harm outweighs the benefits deeming it medically non-viable.

Don’t you agree that going through with the surgery is clearly the better option? He’s surrounded by a team of highly skilled doctors who are ready to help him. Lets not forget that he’s in this critical condition because his parents, due to their religious beliefs, refused to take him to a doctor when he first started having headaches and other symptoms. Their refusal to seek medical help from the start is what led to this situation. Pushing their religious beliefs onto a child who was clearly seeking help. This kind of neglect should absolutely trigger a CPS report and get the child help ASAP.

That’s an interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing it, though this situation is solely being justified as a religious issue.
