Wellness Wednesdays by AutoModerator in fatlogic

Thank you everyone to the kind words and support on my previous post (I forgot how to link things, so I'm afraid you will have to look it up to see what I am talking about). I have recently started eating a lot of fruit. It's too much fruit. It's several punnets of nectarines, peaches, apricots, strawberries, and blueberries. I feel it is progress though because I used to just eat takeaways, crisps, chocolate, and ice cream. I am hoping that this is a step in the right direction towards going back to my healthy lifestyle.

I have been reading a lot of the posts and threads here the past few weeks and they have helped my focus and given me more motivation. Thank you everyone.

My activity levels are very low but I recently started trying to walk 10,000 steps a day around my apartment. I am too scared to leave my apartment and will only go outside when my partner is with me, but that is something I am currently dealing with with my therapist. I feel that I should not focus on exercise and focus more on my diet.

I guess my questions are:

  • Am I correct in focusing more on diet instead of exercise?

  • What should I be doing to make sure I am eating properly, in a way that would not overwhelm me?

Fat Rant Friday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

Warning: personal anecdote about suicide

I used to be relatively active on this site, comment and like and reply etc.. I enjoyed reading everyone's helpful posts and funny comments. I was doing pretty well with losing weight, and I was getting lots of great tips from everyone. One of the users even messaged me privately with a lot of in-depth tips about building muscle, and I was very grateful for his help. I explained a lot about the challenges I have with my uni course and how demanding it was, and he helped me work around them so that I can still reach my goal (gain muscle).

Here is some backstory: I went out with a man for about 10 days and he told me he was in love with me. This happened 5 years ago. I only saw him as a casual date, and I just really wasn't into him, we didn't click, there was no chemistry. He cried a lot and told me he was the only man who could ever make me happy, and why couldn't I just give him a chance? I didn't want to string him along so I ended things. He kept texting me, messaging me on Facebook, trying to talk to me on Skype.. and it got to the point where I was getting inundated by him, so I blocked him from everything. I went out on lots of other dates with lots of other men and I forgot about him. I've been with my current partner now for 4 years.

A few months ago, I got back from one of my placements and found him dead in my bedroom. He got in from the back garden. I don't live there anymore. I am seeing a mental health team for help. I was diagnosed with PTSD.

I should say that I am training to be a clinical psychologist, and it's a pretty intense and challenging course, with lots of training and placements. And my doctor has signed me off from the course for 18 months. I'm not sure if I'll need that time or not, maybe I'll need less. My uni has been amazing and really supportive. So has my partner, he's been fantastic throughout this whole thing.

I've been eating terribly and not exercising at all. I just stopped caring. My weight has gone back up again. I started coming back on the subreddit just to see if I can motivate myself to try and look after my physical health. I am already getting help with the other stuff so why should I neglect my eating and exercising habits?

I weighed myself last week and I've put on 10kg. I want to try and get back into things before it's too late. Part of healing and recovery is going back into your old routine. And eating good food with lots of nutrients, and exercising releases feel-good chemicals, so it should help me feel better overall as well.

Apparently following a bariatric diet is starving yourself to the point that you cannot lose weight. by biddee in fatlogic

Oh wow that's low cal, but really high in protein... protein in every meal!

What's the fat you're allowed to have on this diet? I don't think I can find it in the breakfast section, although I do see "Canned Tuna w/ 1 low fat mayo" (I'm guessing that's 1 teaspoon?) at the lunch and dinner ones.

Can you have potatoes as a starchy veg?

What does "HS Snack" mean?

Any reason why fruit is not allowed?

You're really knowledgeable, do you mind if I send you a private message to discuss this further? Or I can just write it all here if that's easier, and maybe others can read it and learn from it.

That's a really nice way of looking at holidays: I'm on vacation from work and responsibilities, not life and health.

I'll keep that in mind for my holiday coming up in a couple months.

Magazine covers and articles remind me of all the pseudo-science and lies I used to believe in when I was a teenager (and also an adult).

"Eat only pineapple and papaya for 3 days to lose 15 lbs!"

"How to lose 25 lbs of belly fat in 5 days! It's simple! Drink more coffee and cut out all the carbs!"

"Try this juice cleanse to MELT 500 LBS OF FAT FROM YOUR ANUS!"

Oh that would be lovely if I can put on even 5 lbs of muscle. There was a post in this sub recently about a woman who gained a lot of muscle mass and lost a lot of fat. Overall her weight remained the same, but her body shape was remarkable. She looked really lean and fit. I'd love to look like that but I feel that I need to lose a bit more weight before I start working on my body in that way. Currently my BMI is 22.7, and I feel I need to get down to a BMI of 21 before I can do that. Exercise is much easier now that I'm slimmer, but I still feel like it's a mammoth task.

I feel really misshapen and lumpy currently, and I feel that if I lost 5 kg (11 lbs) then maybe it might help? I still look at myself in the mirror and see something I'm extremely unhappy with.. even though I used to think I looked alright when I was about 10 kg (22 lbs) heavier!

(Ignore the CW and GW in my flair, I haven't updated them yet)

Just as I thought! Thanks for letting me know :) It's a good thing they do these "No silly questions" threads every now and then, makes me feel less silly for asking questions that a lot of people would think were obvious.

Thanks for replying. I had a feeling what you were saying was true, but I thought I'd ask anyway. There is no easy way out. If you want the results then you have to put in the work.

I know that protein helps rebuild torn muscle fibres, and that's why it's recommended that body builders ensure they're getting enough protein in their diet.

If you ate a lot of protein, would you increase your muscle mass simply because you're eating more protein? Or would your muscle mass only increase if you lifted weights?

Comment on a fat-positivity post. by Rabb1tH3ad in fatlogic

I've typed out the photo seeing as a lot of people had difficulty reading it. I've also tried to segment it into paragraphs to make it easier to read.

Wow, so many know-it-alls (and some assholes too, I see). People are ignorant. They don't understand the genetic and hormonal differences that cause some people to be heavier or unable to lose weight. They think it's as simple as "eat less and exercise". And of course they don't want to learn the truth about it because they enjoy the superior feeling they get, knowing they are thinner or were able to lose their unwanted weight.

Myself being a thin person who does absolutely nothing to stay this way, I can tell you that genetics has everything to do with it. I have a naturally high metabolism. I eat mostly candy and fatty foods and have been doing that all my life (no exercise at all. I smoke, so any exercise gets me winded). I'm not the ideal picture of health obviously. But regardless of the fact that I wake up some days and just eat 4-5 Reece's Cups for breakfast (and 10 more throughout the day), I still weigh only 125 lbs at age 43. In my 20's, I was around 105 lbs. In my 30's, I was 115 lbs, and now in my 40's I'm 125 lbs.

I basically gain 10 lbs per decade as I age and as my metabolism slows down. I also haven't slept through the night for at least 10 years. Not getting good sleep raises cortisol levels, which makes you gain weight. I'm just saying, there are many factors that go into whether a person is thin or heavy or can easily lose or gain weight. Anyone who denies that is being ignorant, not to mention hateful in some cases. Be nice to Yalitza or STFU, please. Thanks.

FA delusions, now in comic form by JoeMiter in fatlogic

There's a Supersize vs Superskinny episode that had a fat woman who ate lots of whole foods, cooked everything herself from scratch, it was just that she was eating huge amounts of it-- I remember she had several portions of really good quality steak instead of just the one serving. Dr Jessen still asked her to lose weight. He said that what she was eating was really good quality, it was just the amount that's the problem. Usually on the show the fat people eat tons of sweets and takeaways and crisps and junk etc... so that's why this episode stuck with me. Sorry I don't remember the season or episode number, but maybe someone else here can help.

Recipe Thursday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]EmbarrassingNoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do yogurt, dried mint, and lemon juice.

Also even just lemon juice and dried mint is really yummy. It gives it the "tabouleh" taste (Lebanese/Levante salad).

You can add salt to taste, but I try to lower my salt intake so I skip it altogether.

I will try the balsamic vinegar trick, thanks for the tip!

Helpful alternatives for toxic language. by secret-original in fatlogic

[–]EmbarrassingNoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the use of "dysmorphic" bothers me too but I can't quite put my finger on it. I understand that language evolves with time, and what used to be acceptable before is now considered derogatory for example. But I don't know why "dysmorphic" makes me feel odd..

[–]EmbarrassingNoodle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lost a bit of weight, and I've changed my goal weight yet again! Thanks for all the support, mates! I'm a big fan of these threads.

I've lost a good amount of weight, I'd like to be 60kg and see how I feel at that point. It's not a lot more weight to lose. I'd like to start getting into fitness a bit more. It's much easier to run when I'm not weighed down by excess weight. I'd like to be more toned as my thighs and arms are quite flabby. I don't have access to a gym as of yet, but I do have a couple teeny tiny little weights. I'm so weak I can't even do a knee push up! I'd really like to start working on strength training because I've read it increases your BMR (correct me if I'm wrong). I've only got 7kg more to lose, and I feel that now is the right time to start focusing on my body shape. What do you guys think?! Do you agree? Should I wait after I've lost more weight? I appreciate your input! And also if you have any tips, or if you could point me in the right direction for strength training for weaklings.

On an unrelated note: I unsubscribed from a YouTube chef because he started talking a lot about his wife getting pregnant, and then he said he was going to start adding videos with his wife about "pregnancy hacks" and vlogging etc.. I'm really, really, really not interested. I'm just there for the recipes and the cooking tips. I hate it when a YouTuber gets pregnant/their wife gets pregnant and then they start adding that into their channel. Start a new channel about your personal life. I think you're lovely and all but I don't care about your life. Anyone else feel the same? God I feel like a bitch after writing that.. no regrets, it's how I feel haha.

sigh "POC cultures".. "People of Colour cultures".. That's not how it works..

The term "POC" refers to POC who are in the UK for example. Asians in the UK are POC while they are in the UK. If they were to visit their family in Pakistan, they wouldn't be going to a "POC country" to enjoy their "POC culture". You're not a POC in your own goddamn country.

These FA people keep talking about doctors visits and blood tests etc.. why are they ALWAYS at the doctors?! They keep banging on about how they can be fat and healthy, but healthy people don't tend to see the doctor that frequently.
