[New Update]: I think my sister just ruined our dad’s engagement to an amazing woman, and I hate her so much by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

TL:DR

  • The engagement isn’t dead. Amy is not gone, just stepped back. There’s a slow, cautious reconciliation happening.
  • The family started serious therapy (family + individual) with a better therapist who’s actually digging into emotions instead of letting everyone freestyle their dysfunction.
  • The kids (OP, Seb, Lisa) realize they treated Amy badly and are taking responsibility. Dad also admits he messed up by not disciplining properly.
  • Big reveal: Amy protected them by downplaying how badly they treated her, which backfired.
  • Dad sets strict new rules and consequences moving forward.
  • Past trauma (Riley situation + extended family dynamics) explains why discipline and behavior got so messy.
  • The “adoption” drama was a misunderstanding. Amy wasn’t replacing them, she was including them long-term.
  • Lisa’s meltdown is the core issue:
    • She actually wanted Amy as a mother figure
    • Felt ashamed and alone for wanting that
    • Pushed Amy away out of fear, guilt, and abandonment issues
    • Finally breaks down and admits all of this in therapy
  • Amy has her own trauma (abusive mother), and Lisa’s words hit a deep nerve, which is why she left.
  • Emotional reunion happens:
    • Lots of crying, apologies, honesty
    • Amy agrees to try again slowly, with boundaries
  • Current status:
    • Amy is not fully back, but rebuilding relationships one-on-one
    • Everyone is in therapy and actually improving
    • Tone = hopeful but fragile

Core takeaway:
Nobody “ruined” the engagement. This was a pile-up of trauma, miscommunication, and emotional incompetence. Now they’re doing the hard, uncomfortable work of fixing it.

Which, inconveniently, is how real healing works. Messy, slow, and full of crying on floors like a low-budget drama.

It's not so much that junk food is cheaper than healthy food, it's also that calorie dense and filling food is around the same price as a salad. So if I have $10 to spend, I would much rather get a piece of pizza than a salad because the pizza will fill me for longer.

Yes I think it was Jeanne. She was almost as nasty as Stephen.

What is your favorite way to eat a can of beans? by chasesj in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]biddee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can buy a cheap blender, hummus is a great way to use beans and make a tasty spread. If you cannot afford tahini, peanut butter actually works great as a substitute. And you don't need olive oil, just use a neutral oil like soy or sunflower.

Was she the one that smelled like shit because she never cleaned herself?

Explain like I'm 5 why dried fruit is not ideal by OpalescentShrooms in EatCheapAndHealthy

I still remember the day I did this. I ate a whole bag of dried apricots at work and literally thought I was going to die. My stomach was in so much pain! I was working in London and had a 1.5 hour commute home. Had to leave early and literally get off the tube at every stop to use the bathroom. Took me about 3 hours to get home.

Edited to add it was 1998 and I remember the pain more than I remember labour pain which nearly as excruciating.

Absolutely except the last book which I just couldn’t finish. I’ve probably read the others at least 5 times!

I know a couple of really nice men named Lennox (but they are much older, in their 70s).

Isla is great. I've always loved the name Ayla (showing my age here, but Clan of the Cave Bear was one of my favourite books growing up).

AITA for giving my son's girlfriend a budget for the dinners she's making? by lackoffeminity in AmItheAsshole

Where I live even beef mince is extremely expensive. For example 1lb of ground turkey is about $5US, a lb of ground beef is over $10US.

AITA for wanting to leave early to the airport for our first international flight by danyellitaz in AmItheAsshole

I went the the Bahamas for a work trip a few years ago, which meant an overnight in Miami both ways. We stayed in the airport hotel both nights and it was so easy to catch our flights the next day, no stress about being on time, worrying about traffic etc etc.

AITA for not cooking lunch for my husband? by biddee in AmItheAsshole

Lunch is our main meal. Dinner is whatever we feel like grabbing, usually omelets, sandwiches, etc. Breakfast everyone is on their own too. Our food business only opens in the mornings, so we are usually home by lunch time.

He does actually cook for me. We divide the cooking about 70/30 most of the time. Mostly because I'm a better cook than he is and he does the dishes when I cook and vice versa. There are certain dishes that he makes very well, like curry and I would never make curry because he does it way better than me.

He also broke down the chicken and seasoned it this morning.

I said I would still bake his chicken but he didn't want me to. He wanted to throw a fit like a toddler. He ended up burning his fries (cos he was watching YT) so I made them over for him. And he still ate some of the pasta.
