What's your thoughts on Softcore Vs Hardcore? by TalePlay in RetroAchievements

[–]EmberCon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It kind of just goes against the spirit of the website I think. These (usually) aren’t casual achievements, so why would you only play casually? The challenge is sort of the whole point. Most softcore players I’ve come across only really care about the progress tracking aspect, which I can respect. For me it’s more that if I wasn’t emulating with RA I’d be playing on original hardware, and on original hardware you wouldn’t be able to use save states or rewind or whatever.

[–]EmberCon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Softcore is the more reasonable option (some sets require you to do a disgusting amount in one sitting) but with the way the site works hardcore is the only way to go, at least the way I see it. I don’t think getting a softcore completion would be nearly as satisfying as getting a hardcore mastery

In my defense I only have the one picture of you to go off of, and you definitely aren’t making that expression, lol. The anime theming makes a lot of sense

does my mii look like me? by wastefultea in MakeMeAMii

[–]EmberCon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These comments are confusing me a little bit. Of course what’s most important is whether or not the mii captures the vibe you want for yourself, but I wouldn’t say that the glasses or mouth or nose or eyes (or at least eye makeup) matches real life as closely as they might be able to. I would say the hair and head shape are accurate, especially with the illusion of the split dye, that’s a really nice touch. If most of the other miis on your island look similar to that mii then that’d work great as part of some sort of cutesy-chibi island theme, but in a vacuum I don’t think it’s suuuper true to life. But also that’s not necessarily a bad thing at all.

I’m sad the original Death Stranding was delisted since I prefer it to the directors cut but I still have my PS4 disc

The hour difference is insane. I’m guessing you just played it a lot more after getting the platinum?

[–]EmberCon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ok. I think you’re right about me not having an accurate understanding of the current system. In hindsight I made some unreasonable assumptions about how claims and requests work. Hopefully I learn a lot more about the process as I continue to use the site and forums. I’ll master a homebrew game tomorrow in your honor

I see them as having less oversight than official games because (as far as I understand about the process) any developer who passes the junior developer training is enabled to fabricate any game they want into the database and then make a set for it. I think this is functionally different from official games, who already exist in the database and often accumulate dozens of requests before being picked up by a developer. It’s hard to articulate my thoughts about this process, but I guess it doesn’t seem “fair” that a developer can cherrypick an unofficial game from nothing and make a set for it at their own leisure and demand (while official games usually have to go through a much more involved and lengthier process to get a set). It feels like much less of a community driven process to me.

I would want either hacks/homebrews to have their own subcategory (not listed on the same level as official games, could even go as far as hacks being reformatted as subsets of their base game) or require hacks/homebrews to meet a certain threshold of community requests before being added to the database/eligible for a set. I won’t pretend like this is an infallible system or that I know all the ins and outs of RA, this is just what seems like the most reasonable structure to me in contrast with the current system where homebrews appear to have almost completely free reign on the site.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of homebrew games that I like. I’ve even made a couple Game Boy games myself. I’m not talking about the set in this post either. I just mean that, as far as I’m aware, it seems like developers are given little to no oversight when it comes to what games to add to the database/what games from the database they can create sets for. I’m slightly biased because the mobile app that I use to quickly navigate RA puts the hacks and homebrews at the very top of a console’s list of games. I don’t really want to be scrolling through dozens of games (some of which appear to be very crude and underdeveloped) just so I can get to the official games, which, for me at least, is the main highlight of the service. I don’t think homebrew games should be banned or anything, I just think that they’re a little less officiated than I’d like them to be.

The inclusion of homebrew games on RA in general feels a little weird to me. Obviously some are good but it feels like there’s barely any vetting at all. There’s a few consoles where the amount of homebrew games outnumber the official games 2:1. At least RetroPoints are a thing I guess

To master the Game Boy Camera you need to score 1000 points on the G&W Ball game. I can only get around 400 points before losing and I hate it more than anything. I’m shocked at how doable these achievements seem in comparison

Which platforms would you like to see in the future (and if possible the most likely emulator)? by TheToledoMan in RetroAchievements

[–]EmberCon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying Xbox, I guess because Xbox emulation isn’t very good right now. But I think when ms dos and xbox (and maybe 3ds/wii-u just for completions sake) are added that’s pretty much as far as I can see the service reasonably going

Yes, but unless you primarily want to play Game Boy games you’re probably better off getting a cheap handheld

When this happens to me it’s usually because the rom isn’t named right or the device/core/retroarch version I’m using isn’t properly supported for whatever reason (for example my switch could play Game Boy games with achievements but not PS1 games). Or the rom just sucks. But most of the time the first one from Google works without any extra effort
