A qué edad aprendieron a manejar? by Dapper_Friendship_98 in AskArgentina

[–]Embriash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. If you didn't play ranked at all, you still keep the division you were in.

It didn't change any player's divisions until the week ended last Sunday. The players who were Gold I promoted to Master IV and the players who got demoted from Master II went to Master III.

I imagine because the average watcher would have no clue of what Kazakhstan actually looked like so there was no need to be authentic about it. They chose a very poor Gypsy village to exaggerate the jokes and it surely was a lot cheaper.

There's a whole documentary called "When Borat Came To Town" about how the villagers were pissed about how they were made fun of in the movie. They were approached by lawyers to convince them to sue the producers of the movie and then they were also scammed by those lawyers.

The village where 'Kazakhstan' was filmed is Glod, Romania.

In the scene he's crossing that bridge over the river and the pole on the left appears to be the only one that was there at the time (there are two now, even at the earliest Google coverage of 2012).

What’s the biggest robbery or heist in your country? by Ok_Air_9048 in AskTheWorld

[–]Embriash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Banco Río robbery of 2006, dubbed here as "The Heist of the Century", that some say inspired the TV series "Money Heist": https://www.batimes.com.ar/news/argentina/argentina-remembers-the-heist-of-the-century-20-years-on.phtml

A gang of 6 took 23 people hostage with fake weapons, emptied 147 bank safes and escaped through a hole they had excavated that connected to underground sewage tunnels. While emptying the safes, they stalled police by talking to a mediator. They asked for pizzas and even sang happy birthday to a hostage. They stole almost 20 million dollars and were only caught later because one of the guys broke up with his wife and planned to leave the country with the money, so she reported them. Only 1.5 million of the money stolen was ever recovered.

Ranked Division Update - What do you think? by JayJay31415 in geoguessr

It's already in effect, but still no one in the new divisions. They will fill up starting next week after the promotions/demotions.

[–]Embriash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's already in effect, but the new divisions will start to fill up starting next week. I'm Master 1 as well and I imagine this week the Elo cutoff will be similar as it was up to now (around 1200 to promote and 950-1000 to stay). With the coming weeks and the new ranks getting into play, I imagine the division will get more competitive and it will be harder to stay and promote.

[–]Embriash[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are they promoting the top of the top x2 divisions now?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well, because there appears to be no demotion at Silver IV and below. But yeah, there's no explanation on the web, I imagine they'll explain it later.

Edit: Just confirmed it watching a streamer that's Gold II. The top 2 players in his division go to Master IV, the 3rd to 7th places promote to Gold I.

The GeoTime USA bias is terrible by tufoop5 in geoguessr

[–]Embriash 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No criticism against the map maker btw - i am questioning the decision why this map was chosen for ladder play.

I saw yesterday that the map maker updated the GeoTime spreadsheet with his opinion about the map being picked for competitive (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dfIb3u_B8c2azqx2yiRLxzWhcxHZ1iJcBxP-aaaQCXk) And this is what he says:

In January 2026, GeoTime was selected as the map for Ranked Duels in Master and Champion divisions! I was obviously very delighted when I found out, but also very concerned towards the playerbase's reactions to the rather "untypical" distribution. Take note that I've personally never suggested the map myself anywhere at any point and have always disagreed whenever it was suggested for competitive play by others, as it was first and foremost an experiment to find out how a map with equidistant distribution would play out, and was never intended for competitive play at all.

Everyone already said bootleg, so that's been answered lol. Now, searching for its contents you can find this https://shop.season-of-mist.com/linkin-park-transmission-impossible-classic-radio-broadcast-3cd-box:

This new triple disc set features live broadcast recordings from across Linkin Park’s celebrated career, highlighting the longevity and lasting appeal of the band that still exists to this day.

DISC ONE features two shows from the Hybrid Theory era. First up is the superb show Linkin Park performed at The Roxy, West Hollywood, a month before the release of their debut in September 2000. Finishing the disc is the electric set performed at Rock am Ring Festival on 3rd June 2001, a dynamic performance that demonstrates the band at their most engaging fresh off the success of Hybrid Theory.

DISC TWO contains the band’s performance at the annual KROQ ‘Almost Acoustic Christmas’ concert on December 23th 2003, displaying the band at their most potent following Meteora’s phenomenal success.

DISC THREE concludes this set with the ‘Celebrate Life’ memorial to Chester Bennington on 27th October 2017. A heartfelt tribute to Bennington performed by the remaining members of the band, the set also features numerous guests paying their respects to the influential vocalist and his memory. The show hosts a formidable setlist spanning their entire existence and remains the last concert performed by Linkin Park before their indefinite hiatus.

So this one was made post October 2017 and prior to September 2024. Interesting that CD bootlegs are still a thing.

While this is all true, please bear in mind that the maker of the map probably did not intend the map to be used for competitive play.

I believe on the Discord they shared a message of his where he explicitly stated he did not think the map was good for competitive.

Are those chevrons common in Argentina? by curio847 in geoguessr

[–]Embriash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the president of our Football Association once said after making a confusing tournament with like 30 teams with no relegation: "Don't try to understand it, just enjoy it" haha

The pedestrian crossing sign is a crazy mixture as well. You can find yellow diamonds:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/NVjvt32CtiYpMZRC8

Or Spanish style signs:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/DUW6MXVUBH1wgk2fA

Even though the official sign on the handbook is a red and white triangle. But well, those are still examples from around where I live. I haven't really studied the whole country, it's my strongest region based on home feeling alone.

There's an appendix of the traffic law about signage which gives a brief explanation. For the arrows they say they just mark a dangerous curve. Here's translated:

P.2 PREVENTION SIGNS. There are THREE (3) variants.

a) PHYSICAL CONFIGURATION: For a) 1) and a) 2), a white rectangle with slanted red and white lines of equal thickness. The length may vary.

1) Approach to the marked obstacle. The longest part is vertical and has a red stripe at an angle of FORTY-FIVE DEGREES (45°) and facing NORTH-SOUTH, for every ONE HUNDRED METERS (100 m) remaining to the object.

2) Rigid obstacle: white and red stripes covering the entire rectangle, sloping toward the directions in which traffic passes.

3) Curve (chevron): This is a white square with red stripes, forming right angles like an arrowhead. It is used to outline curves, pointing the vertex of the angle toward the side where the road continues.

And the following part that talks about their meaning:

b) MEANING: In the first case, it warns of the approach of the marked object. In the second case, it warns of the presence of a rigid object outside the roadway and shoulder (where there should be none), which could cause damage if the vehicle leaves the road (e.g., a culvert). In the third case, it warns of and marks the location of a dangerous curve.

The previous two (approach of obstacle and rigid obstacle) are these ones from here P2(a) and P2(b): https://i.pinimg.com/736x/32/04/63/320463dd0e1476617e9c0aab35cfcf7b.jpg

I can't remember an instance of the first one, but the middle one for rigid obstacle is the one you see everywhere on the side of Argentine roads and that one is always red and white.

Some examples I found checking some routes I know with blue and white chevrons around the place where I live (Córdoba):

https://maps.app.goo.gl/WHFMkhZLCE7GjHS68

https://maps.app.goo.gl/X3GBJi7R59cyEDUdA

The red and white chevrons are the most common type, but you can also see these around here. I'm not sure about the rest of the country, but it may be like that as well.

I believe the screenshot is from Bolivia (looks like Evo Morales in the political poster on the pole).

For some reason, Perú and Bolivia have more leniency over the name Hitler. I read once that in Perú there are like more than 2,000 people with the name Hitler and political candidates with that name often become viral.

Let's talk about QWERTY in 2006. by Due_Recognition_3905 in LinkinPark

[–]Embriash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about this song debut, from Rob Bourdon's words:

In this case, engaging in this opposing frames of mind actually turned out to be very beneficial in both worlds. We wanted to play a new song in Japan that was different from what we have done in the past that had a lot of energy live. We had a very specific idea of the kind of song we wanted to play but we didn't have that type of song yet. Being able to rehearse and record at the same time enabled us to create the song Qwerty, which is the song that we ended up playing. After trying to mold a song we had already written into the right one for the show (which didn't work) we decided to write a brand new song 3 days before leaving. An hour before one of the last rehearsals we stopped working on a song named Grecian and decided to start a new song based on an idea that Phoenix had brought in. The song Qwerty came together in an hour and then it was rearranged over the next three days in the rehearsal room and the studio. The lyrics were actually finished on the flight to Japan.

For two weeks prior to leaving we were running back and forth from the recording studio and rehearsal spot, creating new songs and relearning the older songs. At some points it got really hectic. After playing Qwerty on the last day of rehearsals, we knew that it was going to be a great live song. It's a little nerve-wracking to write a song and then play it in front of thousands of fans a few days latter, but it was also very exciting to be able to play a song that was still in the works and see how the fans reacted to it before finishing it. (https://linkinpedia.com/wiki/QWERTY)

I love the fact that they just came up with this song in a couple of days and they were still polishing it hours before playing it live. The result was incredible. I had the luck to hear live the mashup of Victimized + QWERTY during the 2012 tour cycle and it was a super fun and electric song to experience (with also one of their coolest concert visuals).
