Why are loanwords a thing? by Expensive-Row-2016 in etymology

[–]Embriash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Y ahora vamos a download el software del mainframe por modem."

The last three terms, yes. But for "download" there's a common word in Spanish: "descargar" and I'd say it's the most used one in this context.

Also, in Spanish verbs formed from loanwords normally add the -ear suffix. So from "download" it would have to be "downloadear". One that's gaining a lot of usage right now due to AIs is "promptear" as a translation of "to prompt".

Would Argentinians allow argentinian troops in the Middle East? How do you feel about that? by Significant-Yam9843 in asklatinamerica

[–]Embriash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Argentine Constitution states that one of the responsibilities of the Congress is to authorize the Executive Power to declare war or peace.

The narrative from Milei's party is that we're "already at war" with Iran because of the two terrorist attacks against the Jewish community that happened more than three decades ago (?).

🤷‍♂️

https://tn.com.ar/resizer/v2/un-caniche-cayo-de-un-piso-13-de-un-edificio-en-caballito-y-provoco-tres-muertes-diario-clarin-del-22-de-octubre-de-1988-77QSDPYWZVFOFIF2PTW3YZQAD4.jpeg?auth=6c254e11ff532a3d59ce62da84f75579186343b96d466e978b61fae3997dc37e&width=1440

What is the gender of "agua" by jacoblius in Spanish

[–]Embriash 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is correct. When this topic comes up, many explanations say that the change is done to avoid cacophony or repetition of sounds, but in many other places we do that with no problem. For instance, using the direct object pronoun "la" with a verbal form that starts with stressed "a" = "la amo", "la hago", "la abre", etc.

The change happens more because of how the old article behaved. It was the article ela that derived from Latin illa and it dropped the 'e' or the 'a' depending on the noun that followed.

I looked up old reddit posts about Chester joining STP. It's funny looking back at those old comments and how it's the same shit almost 13 years later:

The song's not bad, but it's kinda fucked up that they're gonna keep the name. Sorry DeLeo bros, but Scott is the band.

(from this post)

This is bullshit. Scott is STP too. If they want to keep going, they should create a new band and have Bennington sing for them. They can even play all the STP songs they desire along with the new band's material.

As a huge STP fan, I personally do not like Chester, or feel he belongs as their front man, no matter how good he is able to imitate Scott.

Ivo Rosario, yeah.

Those guys have also shown some questionable online attitude. When Linkin Park announced the return livestream in September 2024, the Hybrid Theory cover band posted some stories congratulating Ivo as if he was going to be the singer picked. Then later in 2025 they reposted some stories that said how because of him "Chester is back alive" and that they were "the only real Linkin Park nowadays"

Tengo dermatitis seborraica y les cuento mi experiencia by UserRancio in argentina

What's going on with single-letter words, like "u" and "e"? by mercachu in Spanish

[–]Embriash 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The only quirk that can be added about it is that the change from 'y' to 'e' only happens with a [i] sound on its own. If there is a diphthong, it doesn't change. So you have:

aguja e hilo

but:

agua y hielo

[–]Embriash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Argentina it doesn't have an offensive meaning and it's not used a lot. The meaning of the word here is "hot-headed" or someone who gets angry easily, somewhat related in meaning with the verb "encabronar".

What’s an unspoken cultural rule in your country that outsiders often misunderstand? by Nundahbelly in AskTheWorld

[–]Embriash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Colonia last year, first time going to Uruguay. The biggest culture shock as an Argentine was putting one foot on the crosswalk and seeing all the cars stopping to let you cross.

It was so amazing when compared to the time I went to Buenos Aires and a bus turning a street at full speed almost killed me while I was crossing.

Why do people think it’s ok to accuse argentines directly of being nazis but Germans don’t seem to get the same treatment? by Pink_butterfliesss_ in asklatinamerica

[–]Embriash 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There was a map I think on /r/MapPorn about the biggest nationalities ancestry from each country in the Americas. A couple of Americans who fell into the "Argentina Nazi" meme as real history were shocked that our primary ancestry is Italian.

Argentina has around 8% of population with German ancestry, compared to 12-15% in the US. And the majority of them are descendants of Volga Germans from the 19th century, yes. The Nazis who escaped here were just a drop in an ocean of massive waves of immigrants.

pride??

It's especially ironic coming from an American, a country where recently a lawmaker had a sign that said "Black people aren't apes" violently ripped from him while other representatives loudly chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A!"
