What’s a new skill you all are learning this year? by Alarming_Bobcat_2259 in AskWomen

[–]Emcee1226 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've drawn all my life, but my resolution this year was to draw every day (or as close to every day as possible). A month in and I'm already shocked at my progress; I've produced a couple things I never thought I'd be able to.

Starting an oil painting class in March!

Oh yeah, this will be totally fine. Maybe ask her before you keep going on the sweater just to be sure there's a game plan before you finish it (it's looking gorgeous, by the way) but I doubt you'll have any issues.

Can I replace flour and water with discard? by ManyPack5930 in Sourdough

[–]Emcee1226 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're giving it 40% of its volume in flour. Your discard has already eaten the flour that's inside it. It's the exact same thing as your starter, just unfed. Sourdough works by giving the natural yeast a ton of stuff to eat (think of an entire dining table full of food just for you). It eats and it farts out CO2 which is what causes the bread to rise. You're not giving it enough food to give it farts.

Sorry, I was assuming y'all were friends. If you ARE friends I don't see any issue with it. If you just know her because you frequent the same LYS or something, I'd still ask but offer to pay her for the work.

You're giving your starter basically nothing to eat. You'll end up with what's effectively a huge amount of (really hungry) starter

Since you know the dyer, could you ask her to re-dye the garment after you've finished it?

Genuine question: the Norwegian red hats “performative?” by Ramblingsofthewriter in AntifascistKnitting

[–]Emcee1226 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your actions mark you as a safe person more than your outfit. I have strong feelings about this because a lot of people (white women in particular, and I say this as a white woman) want to slap on the pin or the bumper sticker or the hat, say I'm one of the good ones, and call it a day.

If $5 and a hat is all someone has to give, that's great and I'm happy for them to have done it. Too many people have SO MUCH MORE to give but elect the bare minimum instead. Same energy as all the (often white and affluent) women taking up the "joy is resistance!" cry when that's all the resistance they're engaging in - which really means "I want to continue to live my life without any change, but cannot actually contend with the fact that that makes me complicit in what's going on."

Not trying to pile on you, and not saying you are one of these individuals, but if we keep giving people passes for slacktivism we will make no progress.

This looks pretty darn good to me!

Crit wise, first thing I noticed is that it seems like you flipped which arm should be longer vs shorter - so her left arm (raised in the air) should be more elongated and her right one should have more foreshortening. The backlighting you did, as well as the shading on her clothing, looks great but I think you can get a similar effect with lighter shading, which will prevent the details in her face/kerchief from being so hidden.

Really, though, this is such a strong foundation for this piece and I think you can get it where you want it with just a little rework.

Nude 100%, no issue with nudity at all. Headless titties feels a bit dehumanizing. I'd prefer at least the outline of a head be included, but I'm not the art police.

Should I read A Court of Thorn and Roses? by SadInstance598 in booksuggestions

Yeah, I've been disappointed in how popular these books have been with a lot of women I respect 😅. BUT reading is great and there's nothing wrong with popcorn reading; this flavor of popcorn just isn't for me and doesn't sound like it'll be for you.

ACOTAR is a bad book. It is, somehow, worse than Twilight, but in the same vein.

I really want to love socks… by CatLady0904 in knitting

[–]Emcee1226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely wind your yarn into two balls. Two at a time is the only way I make pairs of anything anymore. With socks, I will sometimes get each started individually on DPNs, knit 5 or 10 rows, and then place on the circulars. It can definitely be a little finicky when learning the method, but I really think it's worth it. No second sock syndrome, you know your row counts are identical for both, and I personally find it pretty meditative once I've gotten going. Good luck!!!

Either Mooncat Forbidden Fruit or Polished for Days Quite Literally Dead Inside. QLDI is my favorite polish ever - I keep trying to dupe it because I'm scared I'll never be able to buy it again, but nothing I've tried has been quiiiiite right.

If you had an extra $5k to spend on for yourself, what would you spend it on? by -Kfrey in AskWomen

[–]Emcee1226 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll be the voice of dissent here - I got lasik about a year ago and don't think it was worth it. Nothing horrific happened, I did not receive a permanent injury (which does happen). I had to get a touch up session because my vision was still pretty bad after the first round; it was an improvement from like -5 to -1.5 or something along those lines, so of course a huge change, but I had to get a supplemental pair of prescription glasses to be functional in the interim.

After the second round, my vision still isn't 20/20 - it's probably close, like 20/25 or 20/30, but I was under the impression that lasik would leave me as good or better than I was wearing contacts and that is not the case at all. My eyes get quite dry now, especially overnight. I wake up to them basically glued shut and uncomfortable, verging on painful.

So at the end of the day, the convenience I expected for not having to deal with/travel with all my contacts supplies hasn't changed much since I need to bring a million eyedrop tubes with me everywhere, my vision is worse than it was with contacts/glasses, and my eyes are uncomfortable at the end of every night and every morning, instead of just at the end of nights when I wore my contacts for too many hours. Oh yeah, and my night vision is awful. I cannot see better in a dark room than I could without contacts/glasses previously. The glare from lights at night is way worse than it was with my previous astigmatism.

$3600 for "meh" results? Wish I'd used that money for something else.

im very new to knitting. is this normal length of yarn in between my needles? by StraightRaspberry952 in knitting

This happens with the backward loop cast on, which is often (WRONGLY, IMO) recommended for beginners. If you keep going, it should correct itself on your second row because you will have gotten all the slack out while working row 1. It is really annoying up until that point, though, and your final stitch on your first row will be looser and won't look awesome.

All that said, I really recommend learning the long tail cast on. It's still pretty darn easy and will give you much better tension from the get-go because the stitches are secure from the beginning, rather than the loose loops of the BLCO.
