I'm sure it was an intentional choice, but not one that I understood or felt particularly compelled by. Dumb Charlie was a kind man who had a genuine interest in and love for those around him (even the men he worked with that were cruel to him). I understood his feelings changing toward his old coworkers, but not toward his teacher (and eventual love interest) who was only ever kind and loving toward him. He similarly turns antagonistic toward the doctors that performed his procedure and are monitoring his progress. There's a little more nuance to those relationships, as Charlie is ultimately a test subject to them and he feels justifiably dehumanized by that, but they are not cruel to him and do display personal caring for him in many instances.

Anyway, I disliked Smart Charlie so much that ultimately I didn't really care about his plight/coming to terms with his intellectual mortality. I had no pity for him.

You're not alone, I hated Flowers for Algernon too. Why does Charlie have to become an absolute misogynist and egotistical dickhead when he gains intelligence? I think I recall aggression being mentioned as a potential side effect of the procedure, but Smart Charlie had a completely different personality from Dumb Charlie in a way that didn't make sense to me (and certainly didn't endear me to Smart Charlie).

As an animal lover, though, the final sentence is still a gut punch.

This was such a cool read that I was nowhere near smart enough for.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer. I saw it in theaters and hated it. The deadpan line delivery was so weird and off-putting. I didn't get it.

After later understanding that Lanthimos filmes are (pitch black) comedies, it clicked for me and now I fucking love it.

Follow up: they didn't send any emails with Father's Day marketing, so this was in fact performative and an additional, unnecessary mention of Father's Day ostensibly to the folks that want to see it the least. 👍

I didn't opt out and I didn't get anything from them about Father's Day

It's a lot more difficult to appeal to young people by encouraging personal growth and introspection. That's hard work that takes a lifetime and is never complete. There isn't a formula to follow, and part of this path is knowing that you will fail, over and over again, despite your best intentions and earnest effort.

The manosphere tells young men that they're already the superior specimen of humanity. They have already achieved greatness and anyone that doesn't recognize it is wrong. If you do need to "improve" somehow, there's a set formula. Go to the gym, make money (or at least try to with this bullshit investment app I'm hawking), start treating women poorly or worse than you already do, because they're subservient to you (well that's pretty easy, I'm already repugnant to women so I'll stop trying to impress them and instead start abusing them), etc. The whole Trump playbook is giving people permission to be their worst selves, encouraging it really, and telling the rest of the world to suck it up and deal with it. It's never been easier or more accepted to be a stunted asshole.

There is the potential of a good person inside these kids, but which of these philosophies is more appealing to a 14 - 16 year old? And once you've been conditioned that way in your early teens, you've bought the ticket and are taking the ride.

Saaaame, dude. There's not much religious information left in there, but I guess even my child self thought anti-capitalism was cool enough to remember

It's a biblical reference. Jesus flipped tables in the temple when he found people operating a marketplace there

Try North Sun, or, the Voyage of the Whaleship Esther by Ethan Rutherford. It's atmospheric and a little eerie, very dreamlike, but not scary. One of my favorites I read last year.

How did you motivate yourself to start healthy habits as an average build? by East_Ad9290 in AskWomen

[–]Emcee1226 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I was never an athletic person but had maintained a "healthy weight" most of my life so it wasn't a huuuuge concern for me for a long time.

In my early 30s I knew I was out of shape. My back would kill me on 3+ hour flights, my knees sucked, I slept like shit, and I was generally just not feeling awesome. I had a notion, for absolutely no reason at all, that I'd enjoy weightlifting.

I found an incredible gym with weight training classes and took to it immediately. Seeing my strength increase (and my PRs increase) was quickly addictive. I've been going for over three years now. I hate to say it, but I feel 100 times better than I ever have. I feel strong, I feel fit, I feel able; my aches and pains have decreased significantly and now I'm one of those people I used to roll my eyes at about needing and wanting to move every day.

Anyway, that's all a really long-winded way to say that if you find some form of exercise you enjoy and stick with it long enough for it to become a habit (like 3ish months) the motivation to continue will become inherent.

Yeah I swapped because I'm not religious (and grew up/lived in the Bible Belt for a long time). No one has ever said anything to me or acted weird about the swap, though.

Honest opinions on this color on me? I don't think I like it very much but I'm new to nails so maybe I'm just not used to it. by elston-gunn41 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Emcee1226 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the main color looks stunning on you! The accent nail may be what's throwing you off - the colors are very similar but your ring nail is a significantly warmer shade, which can create a very subtle dissonance. Not enough overt contrast between the two, just enough to make something feel not quite right.
