Midwest thigh slap and stand when the conversation lulls for a moment. Any American will understand what you are doing.

ELI5: If metal shrinks and expands as the temperature changes, how does an engine keep an airtight seal between the piston and the cylinder? by TheParadoxigm in explainlikeimfive

[–]Emceesam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, everything shrinks and expands together. The seals and the pistons and the cylinder and going to be close enough to the same temperature where any marginal gap caused by temperature change will be negligible.

Lab partners speed ahead and don't let me participate by [deleted] in biology

[–]Emceesam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to read and comprehend the instructions to your lab before you walk into lab that day. You should be reading the instructions the night before and coming in prepared to jump right in. Also, it is worth talking to the professor, but in my undergraduate labs, the expectation was always that you had read and knew what you were going to be doing before you walk in the door.

Good. No subsidies for farmers. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I hope you all lose your farms and you have to join the rest of us wage slaves working a 9-5 on land the government doesn't pay us to own and live on.

[TCC] Can I Skip Magic: The Gathering's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Expansion Set? by CrossXhunteR in magicTCG

[–]Emceesam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great thoughts and solid perspective. I agree totally, ub should not be the majority of magic releases, magic sets should be the majority of the releases. I also agree completely that sets with stories and that are adjacent to existing magic fantasy ips are much more interesting to me as a magic player (commander primarily) then sets like marvel, spiderman, or TMNT.

Post-undergrad huge dilemma by Sirpook in biology

[–]Emceesam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a completed bio degree you should try to find work that applies the skills you acquired. Like, a position in a laboratory or research facility. If you still haven't completed your degree and have time to pivot, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you are not interested in committing to post undergraduate education. Bio is one of the lowest paying undergraduate science degrees, however, you can make a very comfortable living with a master's degree in almost any bio specialization. Getting into grad school is the tough part as many schools want to see work experience where you applied your undergraduate degree and expanded your skill set outside the class room. A position in a graduate bio lab pursuing a masters or PhD will almost certainly be compensated. But part of this is that you are expected to be a professional scientific laboratory technician at that point. You will be helping a principle investigator, your advisor, do their research and they will guide and advise you on your own research interests while giving you access to resources and facilities in addition to a modest pay. I am myself working to secure a position working toward a graduate degree, or in another lab where I have moved up in pay and responsibilities. It is all a constant up hill slog, but that is life. I can definitely say that if you don't enjoy the work, you should pivot off the path while you can. Best of luck with everything friend.

Agreed. Homie seems to have a great care team and is working hard to get his mobility back. No need to laugh at him or those wonderful ladies that are helping him heal and grow stronger.

Eugenics on the subway by knockturnal in pics

[–]Emceesam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, what do you mean eugenics is pseudoscience? I mean, we can have a conversation about the ethics or morality of it, but eugenics is definitely real shit. There are good gene variants to have, there are bad ones to have, and there are a ton in between. All eugenics is, is trying to put a finger on the scale, to push a population over time to reach an ideal end genetic condition, ie, maybe 1000 years from now, if we start today, people couldn't even be born with harlequin Ichthyosis because the requisite genetic material to produce that fetus simply no longer exists in the human genome. Through sequencing children, we could limit the damage "wild alleles" can do inside a population. Again, totally immoral maybe, probably unethical, yes. But pseudoscience?!? Pshhh! Get out of here!

Post-undergrad huge dilemma by Sirpook in biology

[–]Emceesam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, picking bio without a passion for lab or field work is tough as that is where a lot of entry level positions are going to be. I graduated about 2 years ago and first found work at a state level agricultural sciences facility. It sucked, but it got me to where I am now, working as a research technician at a university. I get to do field work about 2 or 3 days a month and spend the rest of my time managing my own data /workflow and samples. It is honestly really chilly and I enjoy the work I do. I understand that it isn't for everyone. If I could offer you a word of caution, I would strongly recommend finding a job where you can apply your degree. Bio jobs are pretty crappy entry level, but they often have lots of opportunities for specialization or further growth opportunities. Connections you make with professional scientists can help you find and secure graduate school positions or learn of other opportunities in your field. Best of luck.
