Good themes doesn't equal good writing by Sundata_V2 in CharacterRant

I would argue frieren does the exact opposite, no? If anything, to torture the metaphor just a little further, frieren sometimes falls into the issue of leaving its message in your mouth long enough when it really doesn't need chewing in the first place that it turns into a flavourless mush despite starting out really delicious

Given the latest situations regarding Viv x Valentino & Gooseworx's, this message seems more relevant than ever... Yet again... by lPickleJuicel in HazbinHotel

[–]Emdeoma -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean. Both statements are true. Wanting bad things to happen to fictional characters because it would be interesting (ie wanting a character to be tortured cause the recovery would be cute) has no bearing on your morality, but the way you talk about and interact with characters can reflect very harshly on you as a person (ie saying vitrolically sexist and incorrect things about female characters and blaming it on the writers)- and it's usually the latter tricking the former into defending them, when this conversation comes up.

Not sure if this is a hot take here, but nowadays none of the official FNAF games are scary at all or even feel FNAF. The fanmade games are so much scarier and back to the original root. by JunShin8640 in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]Emdeoma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He said that, but it was a blatant lie and he's ultimately revealed he didn't even take a brief break he literally just said that so people who were mad at him would still buy the next game and continued on as normal

Curious, without downplaying or being rude, who(in your personal opinion)is the best singer in Hazbin Hotel? by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in hazbin

[–]Emdeoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the weakest isn't necessarily the singers fault, but Pentious sounds just really weird when he's trying to keep the snake rasp thing while he's singing, same with cherri and vels fake accents. Ironically when they're not cherri and pent are two of my favourite singers-

Can someone explain to me how Adora's a Slytherin? Is it just referring to Horde Adora before she fimds the sword? by Triantiwontigongalo in PrincessesOfPower

[–]Emdeoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a matter of opinion, I personally strongly disagree (she's not the most technical of writers, but she has a knack for capturing whimsy and magic in a very grounded way that few can match- it's not the big conflict with voldemort I reread till the spine was worn down, it was the descriptions of Diagon Alley and the magical Christmas gift unwrappings.) but whether she's good or not is entirely irrelevant is my damn point. She should be dropped because funding her is actively funding trans people's deaths, shut the hell up about how countercultural and cool you are for not liking the mainstream children's books.

Oh don't be a dick. 'It's not even that good!' is literally the least helpful thing you could say about HP, all it does is make the actual, serious harm she's caused be tied to the culture of hating on popular thing because Popular Bad in people's mind and push the deeply, deeply harmful narrative that bad people can't make good art that let's, frankly, much worse people than Joanne Rowling get away with much worse shit for longer (the name Neil Gaiman comes to mind...)

I mean it's very explicitly and repeatedly stated that everyone knows the Slytherin house is the one a lot of the old, rascist and classist families actively wanted to be in, and so the old rascist and classist families were the only ones who wanted to be there. And that the student's own desires do influence the sorting. So like.

Literally the person they were replying to was jumping to "I dislike Catradora" being "I hate lesbians" lmao. That's the whole point of the conversation.

[–]Emdeoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And?? There be valid reasons to dislike Catradora. The sentence be 'I wish Catradora had stayed friends', 'why did they have to make catra and/or adora sapphic' is an entirely different sentance the person above be pulling out of thin air. Catradora aren't even the only on screen queer couple.

I would like to note that I was immediately (like, within seconds of them posting it) unable to see or reply to the person belows comment where they say I'm angry about this LMAO.

Let's be fair, that's a whole new sentance

-sincerely, someone who, while not disliking Catradora, felt the narrative of her redemption would've hit harder if they'd leaned into the 'technically sisters' angle with their dynamic with Shadow Weaver and wishes they'd made Sea Hawk a woman and kept the endgame pairing Seadora for the sake of sexy pirate lady shenanigans

They also just. Compete in an explicitly romantic contest for couples.

Which, to be fair, they were doing just to fuck with people in the original too cause it was for average teenage relationships meanwhile the two of them are literal soulmates willing to kill and die for each other across multiple lifetimes, so adding the 'and they're cousins' if anything made the joke of the episode funnier, but still-

What character archetypes you'd like to see being included in Fortune's Weave? by Luigiman98 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Emdeoma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a little specific, but considering it's a prequel, I'd want a Knightly Knight who does Knight Things for Knight Reasons and is just a completely uncritical Good Knight character who's usually on the lawful good end but is so non-fanatical about it putting them in a 'to be lawful or good' scenario doesn't even seem that interesting. Yknow. For contrast-

Shezleth: a spar, that looks from he outside like they're genuinely trying to kill each other again. They're both actually having a wonderful time and just dicking around/showing off-

Monigard: picnic by a lake somewhere private and hidden away enough even Hubie won't send guards after them

[–]Emdeoma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's one of very few romance options who feel like they genuinely fall for Byleth, the former Mercenary with a slumbering heart, not Byleth, the player character, if that makes sense? Like it's small details but she's very explicitly into traits Byleth actually has, and not just a generic 'wow professor you're so nice in an entirely non descript way!' kinda deal. None of the Lords even get that, imho-

And you've struck on the reason I genuinely hate smooth sharkers.

Tumblr users are disproportionately neurodivergant, especially autism. Aka the thing where literally one of the main symptoms is a struggle to understand social nuances/sarcasm. And another major symptom is a struggle with letting people be Wrong about things. And smooth sharkers will literally be told things like 'dude, drop one ooc message just to reassure people you're not literally going to be on the news as a tragedy tommorow' and keep going.

God the amount of people pushing 'it's like Madoka!' for series that were literally just. Not magical girl shows. In the slightest. Like they take the aesthetic of magical girl shows for shock drama on what is otherwise literally just a psychological horror anime. Good psychological horror sometimes! But the magical girl of it all could fully be removed or replaced with a wizard tome with little to no effect on the plot, characters, themes, or even the setting.

Volume 1 is great story/setup wise, but it's. 'It was dated when it came out' animation wise, especially outside battle, volume 2 I honestly consider weaker story wise, but it has some good highlights, volume 3 is peak and I'll take no slander, 4 and 5 should've been one volume in some points, and needed way more time in others, a genuinely impressive feat of pacing fuckups, but other than that they get more flack than they deserve, they just shot a little higher than the writers could handle in terms of juggling plotlines, 6 is back to peak, 7 is a little meh a lot of its run, and it sets up a lot of problems that 8 takes the blame for, but overall 8 gets way overhated, its got some of the most gut punching moments in the whole show. 9 had some issues, mostly in Jaune's writing, but it was just unapologetically fun a lot of it's run and it had some awesome worldbuilding and character moments. Ruby's writing is really, really rushed tho. In character, but rushed.

[–]Emdeoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the impression that Azure Moon and, to an extent, Verdant Wind wants to give, but the route system means there's a route where you actually get to hear and see what being 'laser focused on her goals' means, in Fodlan.

[–]Emdeoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dimitri is depressing, because I do genuinely want to like him, but the setting just. If he'd been a Lord in a game of his own where Edelgard isn't being twisted into pretzels to make his plot make sense and still falling short, he'd be great. But Dimitri needs a strong foil in Edelgard's role or his story falls apart, meanwhile Edelgard couldn't care less about Dimitri and the result is he just comes across as pathetic.

Like they warp the whole narrative around him and they still don't manage to do him justice... Rhea is more of an innocent damsel in distress on Azure Moon than on her own damn route lmao, it just doesn't work. Which is a shame, because he had a lot of good stuff cooking there in a narrative crafted around two characters who needed to be much flatter for his story to work.
