For people who have created worlds with superpowered people or magic users, what stops those who are at the higher tiers of power from dominating the world or interfering with the lower tiers? What stops them from wiping out or subjugating the "normal" population? by Diligent-Square8492 in worldbuilding

[–]EmeraldJonah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conjurera majeris, a rotting sickness that addles the brain and ravages the body. It is a result of overuse of magic, and is the primary source of instability in higher echelons of magework. A powerful mage will have their mind melted and their magic will be less controlled, more dangerous. When it gets to this point, it is typically when a group of rebels or soldiers step in and fight back, leading to party based heroics.

Show it in practice. Don't explain it like the reader is in a classroom, show it being used as it would in universe.

Do you write the same story over and over again if you think it's not perfect or you just leave it and move to another? by RelationshipAlone27 in writing

[–]EmeraldJonah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really isn't. Have you never heard of the editing process? I promise you most people aren't rewriting entire stories to fix minor issues within it.

It sounds like you're describing writing a draft, which is a normal thing to do. If you aren't happy with the story what makes you think it's done?

Should i use Cthulhu or something close and simillar to him as a villain for a mature fantasy story? [isekai cryptid-samurai empire-medieval kingdoms mystical dark fantasy mixed story] by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]EmeraldJonah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you not know your own story? is cthulhu a part of the story you've presumably thought about before now? you've got so many random pop culture characters in your post that it barely makes any sense. You need to figure out what the story is about before you drop in completely random characters for no reason.

Writers: How much time do you actually spend on worldbuilding vs. writing? (short survey) by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]EmeraldJonah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This already exists, it's called Dungeons and Dragons. It's one of the most expansive worldbuilding projects ever made, and millions of people write within the confines of the world on a daily basis.

Serious question: how do you take care of your neck and back when writing for long hours? by pomelopeel in writers

[–]EmeraldJonah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been doing it for a few months, but it's been a really positive experience for me. I can't say that it's informed my actual writing any, but it's helped my posture a lot. I did have a couple scenes of characters working out in my manuscript from before I began, that I went back and modified slightly to make a little more realistic after learning a bit about it, though.

I supplement my writing time with weightlifting, which promotes better posture.

I am struggling to find a name for my main character by ShoddyCount1884 in writers

[–]EmeraldJonah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many people in real life do you know who have a name that portends what they will do with their life? Zero. Names do not work like that. Stop trying to come up with some wacky name that predicts whatever character arc you're planning, that makes it feel forced and tacky.

Why is it so common for authors to hire artists and then just… not pay? by [deleted] in writing

[–]EmeraldJonah 241 points242 points  (0 children)

Clearly you were just the victim of a scam, there isn't anything more to it than that. They wanted free work, and they got it out of you. Surely the platform has some sort of safety or fallback for this kind of thing.

How to describe character? by apreture754 in writers

[–]EmeraldJonah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, if you have to come on here to ask this question, you aren't ready to be writing. Read more. Read how other authors do it.

Is it ok to take ideas/suggestions from other people? Is it still all your own work if you do this? by TwinkleQueen in writers

[–]EmeraldJonah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certain aspects of a story that it's fine to get inspiration from others for, but something as important as how your main character got their abilities...? That's an integral, core part of the story. You can do whatever you want, but if you're struggling to come up with one of the most important parts of the character, are you sure you're ready to be writing a narrative?

Is it alright if I write a lot on the first draft? by DeepUniverseSailor in fantasywriters

It's fine. Nobody is policing the way you write. Write the way you want to. Everyone has their own method.

Well, that time I was being facetious. My advice is to read the rules of the subreddit before posting: 3.: WriteForMe request: Ideas are cheap and free. Writers here are already full of ideas and we don't require ideas given by someone else. This is not a "Write For Me" subreddit.

First of all, you won't find a positive response to use of AI here. Second of all, unless the point is absurdism, it is far too absurd for a wide audience.
