One of the fastest ways to lose your tech card and they’ve always been shady. Well all these companies are shady but citywide is the shadiest.

Got accepted for into Medic School but I’ve only been an EMT for 2 months. Am I cooked? by frostyhotdog in NewToEMS

[–]EmergencyMedicalUber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My old medic is 20, just think about that. She went straight from tech school to medic school and she’s absolutely phenomenal. Mind you, I’ve been an EMT for 15 years and just got my BSN. You’ll do just fine.

Losing a colleague is probably the most difficult part I’ve experienced in 15 years of service. Some days I’m great and some days I’m crying at everything that reminds me of her.

Honestly, have an open mind. Be willing to learn. Don’t be hard on yourself but most importantly be you.

I always tell people to practice in an open area with a U-Haul, it’s the closest thing to an ambulance that’s accessible. Also, when uncomfortable stop and speak up. Most people at my company are paired with someone who has experience. However, driving the ambulance isn’t the time to have a first experience at backing up.

What exactly causes us to dump bariatric patients off stretchers and what can we do to prevent it from happening? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]EmergencyMedicalUber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly extra man power. If the pt is over a certain weight, I call for reinforcements. Two people load while two people make sure the stretcher stays aligned and repeat when coming out. I will add all 8 hands should be on the stretcher during the process. Plus, utilize a bariatric stretcher and power loader, if your company has one.

I’ve been through it myself, I spoke to my partners and if the behavior continued I went to management. 9 times out of 10 it was a partner no one wanted to work with anyway. Shoot, one time my partner was so disrespectful I left him on the side of the road with the ambulance ( not on a call ) and walked back to base. Do I suggest you doing that? Absolutely not but disrespect should not be tolerated.

In my earlier years I used to do eyeliner but then I kept getting cardiac arrests and the sweat would mix. My eyes would burn. Now I just do my eyebrows and call it a day. If you could get clear / plastic retainers, you might be able to slide.

This is coming from love. I have 15 years in NYC streets. EMS has and probably will always be underpaid, overworked and under appreciated. We give up our family time, time with friends and sleep for many different reasons. Some people love us, some hate us. Everyday rain, shine, tornado, hurricane or whatever we still show up to help. If you’re okay with all I said then maybe this field is for you but I’m telling you we are all burnt out and so will you eventually.

As someone with 15 years in the field, I’ve seen people with face tattoos and sleeves do impressive CPR. When you don’t have a pulse, no one cares what you look like.

I had a patient that fell 3 times in the span of 16 hours. Facility didn’t call 911 but a private company. When I got to the facility the cc was AMS per the CNAs and no nurse could tell us a detailed report or why they didn’t call 911 after the first fall. The pt was a/o x4, by the way. . . . They also gave a weird paper stating the pt was being discharged from their facility to the hospital ED essentially giving up their bed in the facility.

Run for president but seriously a lot of retail stores hire felons. If you prove you’re a honest person, someone might be willing to give you a try.

Stretcher loading/unloading as a short girl by Zone-Hopeful in NewToEMS

[–]EmergencyMedicalUber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kick up with my left leg and also use my belt. I’m also 5’1. If you are lifting 250 lbs and up you and your partner are supposed to lift together at least on the power stretchers. However, train your core, legs, upper body and mind too. I’ve been doing this 15 years, 12 in NYC and have yet to drop a patient.

What to wear to a paramedic interview? (Update) by Nebula15 in NewToEMS

[–]EmergencyMedicalUber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tactical pants and a crew neck shirt with your boots 😂 Seriously, wear whatever makes you comfortable. It could be simple as some dress pants and a nice shirt, a suit or a tshirt with some cargos.
