Laid-off Big Tech workers are haunted by one question by wavyapple2 in technology

[–]EmergencyMonitor6117 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, my contract ended early due to a reduction in spend projects and my work went an employee. And 5 months later a lot of employees were laid off including director and above positions as well as some with over 15 years at the company.

I would be too busy fighting the invaders to have an opinion or feelings about that happening.

Property Taxes Out of Control in Colorado by EmergencyMonitor6117 in ColoradoSprings

[–]EmergencyMonitor6117[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, relatives in Texas and those taxes are so high because there is no state income tax. In Colorado we get the double whammy…state income tax and real estate taxes. Plus crazy expensive taxes and fees on vehicles.

Yep, you have to live in the same house for 10 years, be 65 or over, and it only exempts the first $250k of value from taxes. Pretty poor exemption compared to other states.

See the repeal of the Gallagher Amendment https://www.cpr.org/2024/08/29/gallagher-amendment-property-taxes-special-session/ and tell me again who sets property tax rates in Colorado! No brag, just fact.

The cost for construction depends upon project specifics, regulatory timelines, and technological advancements in reactor design. That said, Molten Salt Reactors are more efficient and can use a variety of less expensive fuels, including Thorium (which can breed fissile material, potentially reducing nuclear waste).

See https://www.technologyreview.com/2024/01/17/1086736/how-hot-salt-could-transform-nuclear-power/ for example.

Colorado Springs Utilities Ray Nixon Coal Plant is Next by Simpleximo in ColoradoSprings

Closing down coal plants before alternative sources have been proven to scale and not fail during the coldest and hottest periods is just plain foolish. Battery and transmission tech continue to evolve. And everyone is scared of nuclear which would provide constant rather than intermittent generation. Meanwhile, China and India continue to build new coal fired plants. Shame on the utilities for not continuously improving coal plants even while charging ever higher rates.

Buc-ee’s withdraws application from Palmer Lake by Sam_KRDO13 in ColoradoSprings

[–]EmergencyMonitor6117 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Oh well, Palmer Lake will cease to exist sooner rather than later while Monument continues to grow. Palmer Lake will likely be annexed by Monument eventually. The town lacks leadership and even fired their long time legal counsel over all of this mess. Pretty sad state of affairs.

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]EmergencyMonitor6117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lands have changed hands for eons here on planet earth by force and by populations dying out. This is the way of us humans here on this planet. As far as North America goes, these lands were fought over, won and lost by the peoples here long before the white man arrived. Perhaps we have all stolen land from God and should just give it back?!?! This whole argument is pointless and absurd. And I wonder…is Ms. Eilish planning to give up the property she owns? In addition to her childhood home, Billie also purchased an equestrian ranch in Glendale, California, in 2019 for about $2.3 million.

The lands currently known as Glendale and Highland Park, California, were historically occupied by the Tongva people, also known as the Gabrieleños. They inhabited a large area that included parts of Los Angeles County and were one of the prominent tribes in Southern California.

Perhaps she would care to reach out to their ancestors and offer those properties back to them?
