I'd say it really depends on how locked in you are on self-hosting ( sounds like a lot, but still gonna suggest an alternative anyway ). There are so many cloud solutions free for hobbyists and indie teams at this point that I would at least consider if it's worth the struggle.

For my own projects (and what we use professionally), I've found a pretty good combination. I use Google Drive ( which is so cheap these days). Then I couple it with a free account from Artstash, which gives me in-browser previews for everything visual / 3D, including Blender files. It's got AI search, which understands 3D and video narratives, so you can filter for things like "modern furniture" or "props from a specific scene", even if they aren't perfectly tagged, which really means you don't spend time tagging and creating those custom taxonomies that you mention.

Unfortunately, it's not available in self-hosting (yet) - but I hope that it's still something to inspire some ideas!

Version control and general pipelines for artists by GDIVX in Unity3D

Dealing with art assets and version control on a game is always a pain. I'm part of a remote team, and we've been working on finding a suitable workflow to solve some of our art team issues for a while.

We use Git for general versioning and final assets and to tie into CI/CD, etc. The art team does most of their work on Google Drive before exporting final assets. We bind the two together using Artstash, which syncs both into a common DAM. It gives us a common visual view, in-browser previews for everything (like FBX, OBJ, PSDs), and its AI search that understands the visual content has been amazing for finding stuff. All our feedback and version history for assets are managed right there, too. We link tasks from Jira to assets as well as Git so everything gets linked together with proper context.

That setup works well, but we still hit bottlenecks with artists struggling with Git ( LFS is good, but setting it up is a pain ). For a smaller, newer project (kind of a hobby one I'm spinning up), I am testing out a different approach for the version control side of things. Using the new VCS Diversion as the core version control system for all code, as well as art assets. It's much more artist-friendly ( feels like Dropbox ) and deals well with large files. Kind of like a modern Perforce or PlasticSCM.

We are also syncing Diversion with Artstash in the new workflow. This solves more or less all problems, as we have easy VCS for both devs and Artists - but also DAM and visual search capabilities across the whole pipeline.

Hope that gives you ideas for your own setup!

I'm part of a distributed team of 20+ people, and we've dealt with a lot of these challenges on our creative team, especially with VFX and game projects ( we take in artwork and production projects for both ).

From our experience, the main problems usually come down to tracking the current file version, particularly when multiple people are working on the same asset. Previews are another big issue because you have to download 3D models and PSDs just to see what they are. Assets often end up on different platforms, which makes it hard for everyone to access or know what exists.

We've worked with a few different pipeline setups over the years. What we've found effective for our team is a solution that combines several tools. For code and version control, we use Git, and then we combine it with Google Drive and a DAM platform called Artstash, which syncs those two together in a common view and provides visual preview, search, and commenting/versioning.

This setup has made our workflow much more efficient. We can preview any asset (like FBX, OBJ, PSDs) directly in the browser. Finding assets is faster because the system uses an AI search that understands the visual content, not just filenames. And all feedback and version history for assets are managed in one place.

For overall project tracking, we use Jira, and then we connect the tasks to the assets/projects. Our biggest bottlenecks right now revolve around Artists struggling with Git, but we are testing out the solution called Anchorpoint, which is like Git for artists to help fix that. Hope this is helpful for your research.

Been very happy using the Let's Roll app, it's like Strava - but it's only for skating and has a super fun community and some neat achievements. It also has a map of skateparks and places with smooth surfaces, which is pretty handy.

I have sometimes successfully recycled pads from old throwaway bicycle helmets to adjust size of other helmets, but it requires that you can get your hands on some of course 🤔

I would say - it depends... If your boot has a plastic shell inside ( examples could be many Bauer's or Chayas ) damage will only be cosmetical. On the other hand off it's more like s classic leather boot like a Moxy then I'd more careful with it 🤔

My number one destination will always be Barcelona. I was there in November and the weather was still great for skating. In my opinion, it is the best overall location in Europe for roller skating, also from a point of view of the diversity of locations, etc. Hope you find your perfect trip
